In this essay, I want you to imagine that you are a parent or advisor or friend in a situation that puts you in the position of having to support the other’s position that you might not necessarily agree with. We have looked at and discussed what it means for a couple of parents to accept that his or her child is gay. But there are other situations. For example, what if your friend or child wants to be an actor, an artist (on any level). They are risky endeavors, but we only have one life that we are conscious of. How do we support this person without qualifying our support by saying things like “I just want you to be happy”?
