How do you determine if someone’s chromosomes are normal and how are traits inherited? Let’s find out!  Be sure and review the attached rubric below so you see what I expect when I am grading these.

Lab Project 2: Human Inheritance
Family Pedigree image

“Streams may spring from one source, and yet some be clear and some be foul.” -Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

For your Module 2-related lab project you will complete several online activities related to genetics and inheritance patterns from the marvelous University of Arizona Online Biology Project site:

1) You will complete three human karyotypes (examinations of a person’s chromosomes for abnormalities in number or appearance) online. There are questions following each karyotype for Patients A, B and C (SEVEN total including an internet search problem) that you should answer and submit to me with your answers to parts 2 and 3 below by the lab project #2 due date on the calendar.  Submit your entire report at one time in a single .doc, .docx, or .rtf file attachment below, please!

First, go to:

Reading Chromosomes (Links to an external site.)

Karyotyping and Genetic Disorders-Aneuploidy (Links to an external site.)

Karyotyping and Genetic Disorders- Rearrangements (Links to an external site.)

Read about and watch animations of what happens when things go wrong in meiosis there!

Then try your hand at matching chromosomes up here:

Make a Karyotype (Links to an external site.)

Nothing to report there, just practice.

THEN for Part 1 of your lab assignment go to:                                  Human Karyotyping Activity (Links to an external site.)

Read the instructions there CAREFULLY include all background materials, then click on Patient Histories and follow the directions!

NOTE:  DO NOT overlook the assignment after Patient C to find and write a brief summary of a genetics-related website.  That is included in the project grade!

Part 2) Next complete the Colorblindness Inheritance Activity (NOT the Sex-Linked Inheritance Problem set- you want to complete the one about color-blind Audrei and her family, NOT fruit flies!)

Colorblindness Inheritance Problem Set (Links to an external site.)

Read the opening page and then click on Brief Introduction to Sex-Linked Inheritance at the bottom. Read that and then click on the Color Blindness Problem Set button at the bottom of that page). Please submit your question answers for this set to me along with the karyotypes and the final Blood Types activity describe next.

Part 3) Last, complete the Blood Types Problem Set, including your answers to the questions in your report:

Please respond to BOTH discussion prompts.

Discussion Prompt #1 Describe a conflict you recently experienced at your workplace (hospital as a registered nurse) or an issue needing a decision. Which mode of conflict resolution or decision-making strategy did you employ? In reflecting on how you resolved this conflict or on how you arrived at a decision, would you have done something differently? Why or why not?

Discussion Prompt #2 Identify a powerful public figure you admire. What key factors contribute to this persons powerful image? Think about a powerful nurse you have met. Identify this persons key image factors. Think about nurses who work in wrinkled scrubs, whose hair is pulled back haphazardly into ponytails, and who fail to make eye contact with patients or their family members. What kind of power image message do they send?

(Just need short and sweet answers for the questions below.)

Search the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) link (www.cdc.gov/brfss) and select the Prevalence and Data Trends Database icon. Review the past two years available (e.g., 2018 & 2017), for the following categories: physical activity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, & obesity.

1. What is the prevalence for each topic in the U.S.?
2. How does California data compare to the national averages?
3. What do the trend data suggest, and how do you interpret those data?
4. Does the disease disproportionately affect different population subgroups differently (e.g., women versus men, children versus adults or older adults, different races or ethnicities)?

Do an internet search to determine the following and also input the website where you found your information.
Note: Try to find the most current values. Don’t just write down the first one that pops up in your search and make sure it is from a credible source.

5. What is the estimated economic cost for treating the each disease listed above in the U.S.?
6. What is the total economic cost of physical inactivity?

I need an essay stating if I feel it is a good idea or not for multiple vaccines to be approved for use in Namibia
the instructions from the lecturer are as following
The Namibian government has approved for several Covid-19 vaccines (see list in the attached Government gazette #7479) to be purchased for the nation-wide vaccination campaign. Compose a 400-500 worded argument discussing several reasons to defend your view on whether it is a good idea or not for multiple vaccines to be approved for use in Namibia.
I WILL ATTACH THE DOCUMENTS
The list of  vaccines Cell manufactured by China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm) (country of
manufacture: Peoples Republic of China);
2. Sputnik V manufactured by the Gamaleya National Centre for Epidemiology and
Microbiology (country of manufacture: Russian Federation);
3. Ad26.COV2.S manufactured by Janssen Infectious Diseases & Vaccines (Johnson &
Johnson) (country of manufacture: United States of America);
4. COVAXIN manufactured by Bharat Biotech (country of manufacture: India);
5. AZD1222 (AstraZeneca) manufactured by SK Biotek Co. Ltd (country of manufacture:
Republic of South Korea); and
6. mRNA-1273 (Moderna) manufactured by Moderna TX, Inc. (country of manufacture:
United States of America).

Selecting a research problem is the initial step in the research process. Research problems may evolve from clinical experience, quality improvement efforts, nursing literature, social issues theories, or ideas from external sources. Chapter 4 in Polit and Beck (2017) will be a good guide for this discussion. Develop a research problem of interest related to the chosen specialty track (education, informatics, administration or practice) and include the following criteria.

Describe the research problem in 2-3 sentences
Develop a problem statement
Develop one (1) research question related to the research problem
Propose whether a quantitative or a qualitative research design could be used for this research question

Written Assignment: Biology and Technology in the Real World

Addresses course outcomes 1-4:

recognize and explain how the scientific method is used to solve problems
make observations and discriminate between scientific and pseudoscientific explanations
weigh evidence and make decisions based on strengths and limitations of scientific knowledge and the scientific method
use knowledge of biological principles, the scientific method, and appropriate technologies to ask relevant questions, develop hypotheses, design and conduct experiments, interpret results, and draw conclusions

1. Topic: GMO – information below

2. Find at least three reliable information sources related to your chosen topic. You are encouraged to use the UMUC library in your search: https://libguides.umgc.edu/science .

3. Write a paper with title page, introduction, several paragraphs addressing the questions, conclusion and references. You must write in your own words and paraphrase information from the selected information sources, addressing each of the questions for your chosen topic. Your paper should consist of less than 10% direct quotes. Your paper should be 750-1500 words, excluding references and title page. Use APA style for references: https://sites.umgc.edu/library/libhow/apa_tutorial.cfm

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs). A friend tells you that she avoids foods containing GMOs because they are unhealthy. You decide to use the knowledge gained from your biology class and some additional research to form your own opinion on GMOs. Answer the following questions backed up by reliable information sources. What is the purpose of genetically engineering of crop plants? Include at least two specific examples of commonly grown GMO crops. How are GMOs created? Use the provided course materials and make a connection to the central dogma of molecular biology in your explanation. Which foods in your supermarket contain GMOs? Are foods that contain GMOs safe for human consumption? What types of regulations exist for these foods? Clearly explain your reasoning for each answer in your paper and conclude whether or not you agree with your friend.

PowerPoint presentation for your group mates and Instructor to review.

Please discuss the following questions in your Practicum Discussion:

How does this project fulfill one arm of the mission of public health: social justice?
How does it contribute to social change?
Discuss your role as an advocate and health care leader in promoting positive social change as a scholar-practitioner to improve the health of vulnerable populations in your community.
