This assignment was inspired by the New York Times editorial, A World Without Reefs, wherein the author argues that the worlds coral reefs are doomed and it is far too late to do anything about their demise. (See: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/14/opinion/a-world-without-coral-reefs.html.) This controversial article inspired a blog on the New York Times online opinion page (Dot Earth) titled, Reefs in the Anthropocene Zombie Ecology? (See: http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/14/reefs-in-the-anthropocene-zombie-ecology/) Your assignment is to review both the original editorial and the public reaction it received. Then, write an essay of at least 1,500 words either defending or refuting the editorial authors position. Be sure to carefully cite sources and credit any quotations appropriately and in the proper format
. In this essay you will use your imagination and write an 750-1000 word creative story about a carbon atoms journey through time, beginning in prehistoric times and ending in the present. Although this journey will be fantastical, your descriptions and processes should be fact based and referenced. For this essay please:
Describe the form carbon takes through 5-10 transformations.
One of your transformations should include time spent bound up as an essential component of a fossil fuel, and
One should include the form carbon takes in an oil byproduct today, and
One should include the process of photosynthesis and respiration.
I am looking for a demonstration of an understanding of the: carbon cycle, geological time, photosynthesis, and the use of fossil fuels as a resource.
Your paper must be organized as follows:
1. Title and author name on front page. Nothing else on the front page, please!
2. Abstract 250 word limit summarizing your paper including a sentence on why you chose the particular topic.
3. Introduction Opening paragraphs of your paper that describe the topic in general, its importance or application to you and the community, and why you choose the particular topic.
4. Main Body Discussion of what your research revealed to you and what you want to share.
5. Conclusion(s) The key messages or take-away points that you expect the reader to remember.
6. References List of references you used to research and write your paper; minimum number of references is three.
Please make sure that for any map, picture, graph, or other illustrations that you used in your paper has the source or reference in the items caption.
References
Your paper must use at least three peer reviewed references. Write an expository essay which is an informative piece of writing that presents a balanced analysis of a topic. In an expository essay, the writer explains or defines a topic, using facts, statistics, and examples. Expository writing encompasses a wide range of essay variations, such as the comparison and contrast essay, the cause and effect essay, and the how to or process essay. Because expository essays are based on facts and not personal feelings, writers dont reveal their emotions or write in the first person.
I will attach the instructions and two PowerPoint lecture slides with helpful notes.

Read Read : King, Chapter 1 “Empires and Boundaries”
General background about the early stages of Russian expansion into Caucasia. Use the historical maps to help you track the chronology.
And then I would like you to discuss..
Why does King write (p. 15) that “Identities… have been slippery”? Does that thought apply to the race theories discussed by Painter in “Caucasian Roots” (Episode 2)? Why might categorizations of people appeal to a colonizing or imperial power?
Listen Caucasian Roots, Episode 2.
