Title
Describe what main result you would anticipate seeing in the paper, based on the title alone in as much detail as possible. Its ok if this differs from what is actually found in the paper.

Abstract
The first sentence of this abstract usually sets up a large, motivating context for the paper. This is the main reason that the authors believe you should consider their work important or the overall context into which the authors believe the work will fit. Restate this context in your own words.

The next sentence usually narrows down the motivating context to a specific area of research and implies an experimental question. Can you state the question or hypothesis in your own words? You can keep moving through the abstract and come back to this if you feel stuck.

Next, the abstract will usually state the main experimental approach (experimental design). Try to summarize the approach in your own words. You could also make a flowchart of the experimental design. Also try to state a hypothesis that could be addressed by the design used.

What was the main result of the paper? How does it relate to the hypothesis you came up with above?

In the next bit of the abstract, the authors propose some specific mechanisms for the change in the baboons culture. What are they?

Figures
The main results of the paper are summarized in the figures. For each figure, please take a look and try to summarize (in a few sentences) the main result that is being conveyed (your notes from our class discussions will be helpful!). If you are thorough enough, you may summarize the figure as a whole. It might also be useful to address each panel individually if you need help organizing your thoughts.

Finally, given your analysis of the abstract, do you think that the results conveyed in the figures actually addressed the goals that the authors stated? What might you have done differently? What else might you want to see or what would you do in a future study (what kind of data would you want to see next)?

Because it draws from other fields such as bio-statistics and social sciences, epidemiology is described as being interdisciplinary. From which aspects of other disciplines do you feel epidemiology borrows? In what ways does epidemiology differ from those disciplines? When responding to your classmates, provide additional connections between epidemiology and other disciplines. Support your response with specific examples.

(1) Answer the posted “Five Questions about Light”.

(2) Write a 1-page essay on one (just one; pick your favorite!) of the topics , (a) “Light Pollution”, or (b) “Radiation from Mobile Phones: Dangerous or Not?”. As usual, cite on a separate page the references you consulted. In either essay stick to what can be said about the respective topic from a scientific point of view. You may express your personal opinion but only at the very end.

If you pick Topic (a): Describe what is meant by light pollution, what adverse effects it causes and why, and what can/should/will be done to reduce the problem. (Btw and FYI, to raise awareness of the issue, many cities worldwide are involved in “Dark Skies” night, with all but the most essential lights everywhere turned off!

If you pick Topic (b): The issue of potential dangers of the radiation emitted by mobile phones is a highly politicized and emotionally charged topic. Try to de-mystify it by separating facts from speculation as best as you can. (Hint: that’s not always easy!) Start with the website of the National Cancer Institute but also look up and discuss the opposing view.

Assignment: Political Geography
For this assignment, you will be required to watch a series of videos and compare ideas within them by answering the following questions.  Turn in a word document (or equivalent) of 300-500 words to the instructor before the assignment due date for week that includes all parts as instructed below.

China on the World Stage
We have covered political geography in the textbook.  Lets focus on recent efforts from China in its political geography endeavors.  Do you know the history of trade in China?  Have you been paying attention to what China has been up to recently?

Watch the following videos and answer the questions.
The Silk Road: Connecting the ancient world through trade – Shannon Harris Castelo TedEd

China’s trillion dollar plan to dominate global trade Vox
https://youtu.be/EvXROXiIpvQ

1) How much did you know about the history of the politics and trade of China?
2) What does this history tell you about recent initiatives, like the new Belt and Road Initiative?
3) How has China tapped into this history?
4) Do you think Chinas renewed globalized attitude is overall good or bad for the nations it is working with on projects?  Explain why or why not.

Final step. All previous documents will be uploaded in order to have a coherent paper.

Academic Research Paper
The paper should be between 25-40 double-spaced pages in APA format;  must include the following:

    Title Page
    Abstract
    Table of Contents
List of Tables and Figures (if applicable)
    Introduction
    Research Strategies
    A Review of the Literature
    Discussions and Conclusions
Annotated Bibliography (All sources referenced in the paper should be listed and annotated in the bibliography.)
    Appendices (if applicable)

Literature Review
In preparation for writing your literature review, please give careful attention to the way in which you will organize your sources. Your literature review must contain at least 10 credible sources with appropriate citations in APA or MLA format (depending on your discipline). As you organize and synthesize your information, use citations and references appropriately. In all cases, remain true to the context of your sources, taking care not to misrepresent or quote out of context. This assignment must contain the following sections.

Introduction (Connection to Discipline and Explanation of the Issues)
Explain the issues and make a connection to your discipline. Introduce the topic with reference to your thesis or main question in the opening paragraph.

Describe the issue or problem clearly and with enough relevant information that your reader will fully understand it. Make connections between your topic and important theories/facts/examples from your discipline or area of study (e.g., psychology, history). The purpose of the literature review is not to answer your questions but to situate your topic within the wider literature on the subject matter.

Source Finding Analysis (Accessing Information and Evaluating Sources)
What databases did you use to find potential sources and why? (Reminder: Google and other search engines are not databases. Use the New Jersey State Library database resources.) What key word searches did you use, and which were most effective? What database or key word did you exclude from your search, and why? How did you make sure that your information sources were highly relevant?

Explain how you evaluated and selected sources to use for this project. How do you know your selected sources are appropriate to your research question? How do you know you have chosen a variety of sources that are appropriate for the scope of your project?

How did you make sure that you were fully complying with all ethical and legal restrictions on the use of published, confidential, and/or proprietary information?

Themes (Use Information Effectively to Accomplish a Specific Purpose)
Synthesize the information from your sources in order to help your reader fully understand your topics background and relevant issues. What main themes emerge in the literature on this topic? What do different sources have to say about these themes? What patterns, differences, or similarities emerge from the sources? What significant scholarly disagreements have you noticed? Provide your reader with a sufficient breadth of the topic under your themes or means of organizing your sources so that the reader can be aware of and acquainted with the topics background and relevant issues. Be sure to situate the topic within a larger context and draw out themes and key ideas.

Curiosity (Sources and Evidence)
What information have you found that illustrates both your interest and rich awareness of your topic? Why is this information so interesting? What ideas are you developing that are appropriate for your discipline?

Conclusion (Summary)
Finally, after you have completed the body of your review, provide a paragraph summary. What have you learned thus far?

Keep in mind, the literature review is not an extended annotated bibliography whereby you list each source you have read and provide a brief synopsis of it. Rather, the literature review is a running narrative that develops the background and context for your topic. Finally, additional research should continue to be done throughout the course until the final submission of the capstone project (which must include at least 15 sources in the final bibliography).

APA 7, double spaced

This is the 4 assignment required, please see first 3 assignments written. This will be part of a 8 assignment capstone project on the effects os deforestation of the Amazon. I have included a 4 document, an early outline but I am open to suggestions.

Part I
-Develop a full-sentence outline for your entire capstone project. Use at least three levels (I, A, 1)
-Use alphanumeric or any other format that Word offers to create your outline (provided you go at least to the third level) and write in complete sentences (not phrases and not paragraphs). The use of full sentences will help your mentor better understand what you have in mind, since phrases can be ambiguous or lack sufficient information or clarity    –Outline should conclude with 5 to 7 sources in APA or MLA format with entries alphabetized. These sources should be academic in nature and indicative of a source that would be reliable and recognized, though it does not need to necessarily be peer-reviewed.

Part II
Narrative
In your narrative, define the scope of your research question, determine the key concepts, and relate your sources directly to the research question or key concepts.

– With your research question in mind, explain the scope of your project. The scope includes the specific goals of your project as well as the tasks that need to be completed in order to reach those goals related to your research question. After completely defining your projects scope, defend the appropriateness of this scope for your project and why it is neither too broad nor too narrow.

– Determine the key concepts you must research, study, and analyze to move your project forward. Provide preliminary definitions of these key concepts and explain how they relate to your research question.

– Indicate the types of information sources (i.e. databases, journals, articles) that you have selected so far and will continue to seek. For each information source type, explain how it relates directly to your research question or the key concepts you have identified.

The narrative is intended to help the reader see how you have approached finding the required information to the resolution of your problem statement, research question, or continued development of your hypothesis or thesis statement. In an effort to expand your breadth of understanding of your topic,

In your 3-4 page response to The Trouble with Wilderness; or Getting Back to the Wrong Nature, William Cronon argues our idealization of wilderness has led us astray.  Wilderness has become the battle ground in many discussions of conservation and protection of natural resources.  Historically, the concept of Wilderness has been at the heart of some battles between Utilitarian Conservationist and Preservationist. Ultimately, Cronon is asking you to exam what Wilderness means to you and how it shapes your priorities for conservation. Your paper should be typed (word processed), double spaced, with 1-inch margins, no header (name should be right or left justified).
You are not required to read any related materials outside of the essay itself, However, by citing others work you strengthen your argument.  Please avoid statements that are opinion written as if they are fact.  If you do use other sources, you must provide references to all sources you used at the end of your essay. The format of citation is not critical if it is formatted consistently and allows the reader to find the materials.
Please avoid direct quotes whenever possible.  You may find a need it quoting a particular thought of Cronons, but first consider if you can paraphrase.

See the articke “The Trouble with Wilderness” attached.
