You have been hired as part of the network security team at UMGC.  After completing orientation and training, your manager calls you into a meeting to discuss your first project.

The university has completed the implementation of the leased building in Adelphi, Maryland.  The university realizes it needs to secure the faculty, students, and visitors’ network and data.  With your background and skills, the university is looking to you for guidance.  In addition to helping the university secure its network, you are required to obtain your CompTIA Security+ certification within 60-days of being hired.

As you will recall, the university leased building in Adelphi, Maryland was designed and implemented via the following layout:

Youve been asked to perform network security analysis and planning, secure the boundary devices, hosts, and software; and secure the data at rest and in transit.  Your deliverable should explain the requirement, propose a solution, and justify the solution.  You should make use of the TestOut LabSim material to create the task, and study for CompTIA Security+ certification.  You should also make use of other sources as required.  It is important that your deliverable explain the technical issues in layman’s terms.  Before you begin, make sure to review the Network Security Proposal (Parts 1-3).

In this learning demonstration, you will use TestOut Security Pro to help you understand how to identify and assess network infrastructure and pass the CompTIA Security+ certification. In order to identify your strengths and weaknesses, you will first complete the practice exam that will prepare you for the certification. The learning materials within TestOut LabSim will help you understand the types of vulnerabilities within a network and how to address them. As you step through each set of activities, you will submit a Vulnerability Assessment and Recommendation Document in three parts. Use the results of the certification practice exam you took at the beginning of the class to help guide you on which areas within LabSim you should pay closer attention. You must complete all online labs in TestOut LabSim; these are the activities with the computer mouse icon. Some of the other areas in TestOut LabSim are optional. You can complete any or all of those if you feel you need to learn more about the topics.

There are nine steps in this project that lead you through each deliverable. Begin with Step 1, obtaining access to TestOut Security Pro and enrolling in LabSim, and then continue with Step 2, taking the practice exam.

Essay 1: Exploring a Theme – Education

Your first essay assignment has two purposes. The first is for you to start exploring your ideas around the theme of Education by thinking about how others define what education is. To start thinking about definitions, look at forty quotations from famous thinkers that Dr. Price-Mitchell, a researcher and psychologist has gathered on her blog: . Choose one of these quotations, or another definition of what is education, that resonates with you, and use it to start brainstorming what beliefs you have about one aspect of education. This is the second purpose of this essay, and it is guided by National Public Radios call for essay contributions to the This I Believe project.

Guidelines:

Here are the writing instructions (quoted/adapted from the National Public Radios website):

Begin your two page (approximately 500-600 word) essay with a compelling introductory strategy such as one of the strategies given in Chapter 9.4, pages 359-361, of our textbook. Name your belief in a clear thesis statement in your introduction.

Make sure that you include at least one quotation on education somewhere in your essay to bring in a They Say element to your writing. You do not need to give a full MLA in-text citation/Works Cited for your quotation as we will study that later in this course, but you must give the name of the quoted person. You can use one of the forty quotations on Dr. Price-Mitchells blog or another one that you like.

In the body of your essay, tell a story and be specific. Ground your belief in the events of your life. Consider moments when your belief was formed or tested or changed. Think of your own experience, work and family, and perhaps tell of the things you know that no one else does. Your story must tie in with this essays theme of education.

Make sure you have a conclusion that brings your essay to a satisfying end such as one of the strategies given in Chapter 9.4, pages 362-364, of our textbook.

Use correct MLA essay format: Margins, Header, Heading, Page numbers, Spacing, Title (see resources in our course site for help with this). Before you submit for grading, make sure that you proofread for errors in grammar and mechanics.

Week 5 – Final Paper

Creating a Logistics Plan for International Transport and Warehousing of Goods

Strategic Logistics Management, Inc. (SLM) is a U.S.-based third party company whose primary business is to deliver logistics services. Currently, SLM manages several warehouses in Los Angeles and the New York/New Jersey area. SLM provides expertise in air and ocean shipping, customs clearance, forwarding, warehousing, and ground transportation. Over the past five years, SLM has built a successful logistics information system (LIS) that includes personnel, equipment, and technology. The decision-support systems included in the LIS are a transportation management system (TMS) and a warehouse management system (WMS).

SLM employs experienced personnel in the United States to handle a wide range of logistics activities and provide customized logistics solutions and services. The company is considering expanding their global operations to provide the same range of services in Australia, including:

  • Imports: A network of offices and trade connections to support import consolidation, provide warehousing of goods prior to customs clearance, and manage import documentation for customs formalities.
  • Door-to-door services: Cargo pickup from supplier locations and transportation of goods directly to the customer, as well as freight bookings with airlines and ocean lines to handle cargo exports from both the United States and Australia.
  • Exports: Handling of various types of cargo exports by ocean and by air, ensuring the timely movement of goods at the most competitive rates. Complete export documentation is provided.

SLM is working to secure two contracts in Australia that will go into effect next year. The first contract is with Greer Wire Company in Melbourne, Australia, to transport two million pounds of stainless steel brushfire mesh used in protecting homes in brushfire prone areas. This cargo will be shipped to Los Angeles, California. The stainless steel wire mesh is supplied in five-meter rolls with an outside diameter of 500 mm, and each roll weighs 50 kg.

The second contract is with Brooks Brothers, a clothing company located in New York City, for warehousing and transportation of clothing in various sizes of cardboard boxes that easily assemble in one unit load on a 48-inch by 40-inch pallet. The goods will be shipped from New York, New York, to Sydney, Australia. For the purpose of this assignment you can make reasonable assumptions about the weight of the boxes.

SLM will manage a rapid flow of goods to and from Australia. The proposed warehouses in Australia will be located in proximity to two large metropolitan areas, Sydney and Melbourne. In the first year of its operations in Australia, SLM plans to handle an average of 200 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of imports and exports between the United States and Australia every month.

You are a Logistics Manager at SLM. As part of the companys goal to strengthen its competitiveness in the global marketplace, the CEO has asked you to design a logistics plan for the proposed warehouse operations in Australia and transportation of goods between Australia and the United States.

In your report (allowing for reasonable assumptions when necessary),

  • Select one of the two SLM contracts described above.
  • Analyze the products physical properties, volume, and quantities to determine if the products shipment size is small (150 to 500 pounds) or a larger (consolidated) shipment (at least one TEU).
  • Evaluate at least two modes of transportation that best support the organizations supply chain for shipping the product from one country to another, door-to-door, in a multimodal shipment. Explain your reasoning.
  • Identify the type of warehouses that SLM should employ in Australia to ensure a rapid movement of goods. Recommend either public, private, or contract warehousing and explain how your recommendation supports SLMs supply chain management.
  • List and describe the necessary commercial, banking, and shipping documents that comply with export and import procedures in the United States. These may include a commercial invoice, certificate of origin, shippers export declaration, shippers letter of instruction, bill of lading, freight bill, and letter of credit.
  • Determine the appropriate Incoterms 2010 rule, depending on the shipment mode and buyers and sellers responsibilities.
  • Select a process (Lean, Six Sigma, Just-in-Time, or Kanban) and explain how the process can be implemented to ensure effective and efficient warehouse operations techniques are in place that support the companys supply chain design.
  • List a minimum of four additional budget line items in the table below with a rationale to ensure smooth warehouse operations in Australia. Support your rationale by including various logistics activity measures, cost drivers, profit models, and the role of inventory and how they influence SLMs financial outcomes.

Budget line item

Rationale

Shipment consolidation

Cost savings management

Warehouse safety and security

Efficient and safe warehouse operations

Software implementation

Order management, customer relationship management, and load-planning for a truck trailer.
