Day: October 6, 2020
Write a compare/contrast essay due Tuesday, 10/6. The word count of the essay must be between 700-750 words. This does not include header, title, Works Cited page, etc. Please upload to Canvas and bring a hard copy to class; please attach a rubric to it. Essays that fail to be uploaded by deadline will not be accepted. Poetry Essay: Comparison/Contrast Assignment Details
1. Choose one of the themes we have covered: Love and Lust
2. Choose two (2) poems from our class readings that focus on your theme pairing of choice (see bullets above). Which two poems do you gravitate towards most? Which do you feel you “digested” well enough, have a strong handle of, and can write a thorough analysis on?
3. Find two elements for each poem that you thought were not only special and effective but also conveyed the poem’s theme. In other words, how did you know the poem was about conformity and rebellion? Based on what devices? You will either have two to four devices, depending on your organization (see Plan A and Plan B below)
. 4. You are to explain how both poems compare and contrast.
5. Find one source to back up any claim you made in your paper (we will cover this more in depth in class next week.)
6. Do not forget your Works Cited page. You will either be citing poems from the internet; most poems are sourced from Poetry.org. Additionally, you should cite your secondary source you used in your writing process.
7. When finished you should feel as if you have given the reader of your paper a good understanding of the poems.
8. Include advanced vocabulary.
9. You must create an interesting title for your essay. “Essay #1” or “Compare and Contrast Essay” do not suffice.
10. You must correctly site all textual evidence. See your notes from class when for how to format this. The Academic Center can also help check for this. 11. Vary sentences: simple, compound, complex.
12. Use transitions.
13. Proofread/revise.
14. Go to the Academic Center if you would like some help.
15. Remember – you have many chances to make this paper better (have a friend read it, make proactive revisions, Academic Center).
16. Good Luck! About the Comparison/Contrast Essay A comparison/contrast essay weighs the differences and sometimes similarities between two distinct things: two boyfriends, high school vs. college courses, your first car with the car you have now, two of your children or a brother and sister, etc. As always it is important to do some pre-writing to be sure you have enough “ammunition” to write a complete essay. There are two formats for a comparison/contrast essay. You are going to pick one. Plan A has an introduction, one large paragraph (body paragraph) about one of your choices, one large paragraph (body paragraph) about your other choice, and then a conclusion. Plan B finds three areas you could discuss and then does an introduction, a paragraph (body paragraph) for each choice, discussing both poems in each body paragraph, and a conclusion.
Plan A 1. Introduction – get the reader interested with a hook – perhaps provide a historical angle or brief biographies of poets only if it contributes to your thesis. Random facts just ramble
2. What you want to say about your first poem (details)
3. What you want to say about your second poem (details)
4. How do they compare and contrast?
5. Conclusion
Complete the following two essay assignments. (You must complete both essays.) You need to submit your essays by uploading them into Blackboard by the start of class as MS Word or PDF documents only. Essays are to be double-spaced, in 12-point font, with 1-inch margins. Each essay is to be between 750 and 1500 words (not including the reference list). You are free to write more, but please remember that quality is more important than quantity.
1. In readings and discussion, we have defined race as an idea that is often ascribed to biology but that is actually deeply connected to differences in power.
Explain how race is connected not to biology, but to differences in power. Give historical examples of different racial categorizations to support your argument.
Explain how racial categories have been used in the US census, including how those categories have changed over time. Link these changes to the point that race is about power, not biology.
Starting with the 2000 census, people have been able to select more than one racial category for themselves. Explain the arguments that were given for and against this change, and link those arguments to the point that race is about power

Purpose: This paper will build on your opinion from the in class writing activity (Is leadership taught or is
it an innate skill). You will support your opinion, consider the differences between management and leadership
and decide whether leadership can be taught by supporting your opinion through research.
Directions: Students need to use at least SEVEN SOURCES for this paper. Three (3) scholarly and three
(3) non-scholarly sources to research the differences between management and leadership and answer the
question on whether they feel leadership can be taught or if it is an innate skill by supporting their answer with
the research they find. The other one source can be either type of source. A non-scholarly source meaning not
peer reviewed journals or books. Non-scholarly sources must add substantial support to your argument. Sources
such as brainyquotes.com, dictionary.com, etc. will not count towards your non-scholarly sources. Acceptable
non-scholarly sources include newspaper articles, blog posts, webinar material, etc.
The premise of this paper is to get you, the student, to do two things:
1. (Minor Premise~1-2 paragraphs) Differentiate management from leadership by not only defining the
differences, but showing relevant examples of both and being able to explain the differences between the two
examples.
2. (Major Premise~6-8 paragraphs/Thesis focused) Answer the question of whether leadership can be taught or
if it is an innate skill. An answer of either yes or no is fine the important part to this question is that you support
your answer with research to back up your opinion.
Format of paper:
There should be a title page following APA format
1 margins, 12 point Times New Roman font & double spaced throughout the paper.
Use different levels of heading to organize your paper into: minor premise, major premise, (write
specific not generic headings) and conclusion. See example for correct APA format.

cited within the text- a dictionary is not a source that will count towards one of your three scholarly
sources
Underline your Thesis
Minimum 5 full pages-maximum 6 pages in length of content, Title and Reference pages do not count
towards your 5-6 pages
APA Reference List resources:
A. Total of 7 sources referenced (3 scholarly & 3 non-scholarly, 1 your choice):

The emphasis of this paper is to expand upon your opinion from the in class writing activity
utilizing scholarly and non-scholarly evidence to support your argument.
You must be able to differentiate management from leadership and use examples to explain how
they are different.
Can leadership be taught? Yes or no. You chose your side in the in class writing activity, and now
must support that choice utilizing a minimum of 7 sources.
Use formal writing, avoid 1st person statements unless talking about a personal situation (keep this to
a minimum of two or less) or quote
You are only allowed to use up to 1 direct quote in your paper; otherwise you should summarize the

Hi, I am an 12th grader and I am applying for Johns Hopkins (JH) University, Biomedical Engineering. After I have my BSc in your years, I intend to study Medicine. The essay topic of Johns Hopkins is as follows.
“Founded in the spirit of exploration and discovery, Johns Hopkins University encourages students to share their perspectives, develop their interests, and pursue new experiences. Use this space to share something youd like the admissions committee to know about you (your interests, your background, your identity, or your community), and how it has shaped what you want to get out of your college experience at Hopkins.” 300-400 words.
I am uploading my resume to get to know me as much as possible, and following are some key points you may refer to.
Nobel laureate Prof. Dr. Peter Agre of Johns Hopkins had been in my school in 2019 for a speech on his study, and I was appointed by my school to accompany him. He inspired me a lot on JH, as well on a pre-med study there. JH’s hospital is one of the best in the World which also inspires me not only for medicine in general, but also for JH itself. Humans and public are most important things in the universe, that’s why I want to be a Medical Doctor. JH’s Bloomberg School of Public Heath is another place for me that I desire to attend courses at. In Biomedical Engineering, to me materials are utmost important. I believe JH is excellent in Materials Engineering, too, whereat I may attend courses.
Additionally, you may use or not, though amateur I am a film maker. I have attended a 5-weeks pre-college program in 2019 at RISD – Rhode Island School of Design, and got excellent scores in Filmmaking Major. Please see my resume. I have a YouTube Channel, www.youtube.com/FlightReviewer with over 5.5K subscribers where my videos got hits around 100K, and some rising to 650K. You may link this filming activity of mine to JH’s Mica Film Center which is a research center.
While closing, as you should have realized the “… how it has shaped what you want to get out of your college experience at Hopkins.” is important where an emphasis on the essay should be put.
Thank You for Your Efforts,
Emre
