You will identify and discuss two areas three areas of HRM that are currently being impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic: Downsizing, training, health and safety.

The nature and extent of Covid-19s current impact in the two/three HRM areas chosen, with supporting evidence and specific business examples.
Possible future impacts of Covid-19 in those areas, based on your research.
Implications of these impacts, both current and future, for workers, businesses, the Canadian labour market, and the economy generally.
Where your research sources make conflicting arguments, indicate which argument your group finds most convincing, and why.

While the focus of your research is on HRM in Canada, you may include additional relevant examples from outside of Canada to support your position.

Submit your notes/thoughts on the following questions related to the required reading:

Stephanie Shonekan, “Black Mizzou: Music and Stories One Year Later”Preview the document from Black Lives Matter and Music
I recommend reading the entire chapter, but only pp. 1426 are required.

ANSWER QUESTIONS

1.What is Shonekan’s central thesis/argument? You can paraphrase or quote directly.

2. Briefly describe/discuss one thing that stood out to you from this reading (something interesting, inspiring, surprising, troubling, etc.). All answers are okay

Find a case on RULE 403, either a federal or a state case with a similar version of the Evidence rule that examines the rule in detail. Answer the following questions about the case:

What is the full citation to the case?
What were the facts of the case? Be brief here.
What was the legal issue(s) the court was asked to decide? What was the Evidence rule at issue?
What was the courts holding and reasoning? Explain this fully.
How did the court apply the evidence rule? Explain this fully.
Does the courts application of the evidence rule seem consistent with what you learned in the chapter in the textbook or in class lectures where the rule was discussed? Why or why not?
Evaluate the courts holding by explaining whether the outcome seems fair. You can compare the holding to some of the examples from the textbook or to the class discussions.
Remember the following for the paper format:

Papers must be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font. They must be double-spaced, and should be 2 full pages long (margins should be 8 x 11 and try not to exceed 2 and pages total).
You do NOT need a cover page nor do you need a long caption on the first page. Instead, simply put your last name in the upper right corner of the first page and then begin writing. You do not need a title. Make all of your content count!
Include the full citation to your case in the body of the paper.
Do not use the question numbers and do not repeat the questions in your paper. Just write in paragraph form and be sure to address all the questions above fully.
Be sure to proofread carefully. I will deduct for improper grammar, punctuation, and word usage.

2. Pragmatics and Semantics.
Over the next few days, observe verbal interactions (in any language you understand fluently) and the settings in which they occur around you. Choose ONE (a, b, or c) of the following issues to address, citing examples from your observations to support your answer.

a) Find examples in which one or more of Grices maxims are flouted. Note the situation and, as accurately as possible, the utterances which were exchanged. What was the meaning of the exchange(s)? Explain how Grices maxims were flouted. How might you take what you have observed in this exchange (or these exchanges) and incorporate it/them into a lesson for language learners? You may consider ESL learners or learners of any other language you know; just specify the learning context, please.(pragmatics)

b)  Choose one speech act and find instances of how this speech act gets realized in everyday activities. E.g., you might choose to look at complaints and take note of how people make complaints. Note the sequence of turns who initiates the complaint, who responds, and how? What happens next? Based on the various instances of this speech act you observe, in what ways can this speech act vary? On what factors might this variance depend? E.g., cultural, situational, personal, etc. Discuss the implications of your findings for L2 learners. (pragmatics)

c) Observe naturally occurring spoken or written (or both) English around you. Find two or more examples each of lexical ambiguity, synonymy, hyponymy, overlap, and antonymy in the phrases you observe. Describe the settings in which you observed them, and explain how they were used. Discuss how you might explain their uses to a language learner. Please note that you should not find examples from a linguistics textbook or a google search. Rather, you should find examples occurring in your everyday life and observations.(semantics)

(I will upload our textbook for you, please use for reference. Chapter8 pragmatics Chapter7 semantics. I will also give you two examples of others’ work)

Choose 1 of the following Discussion Topics and provide your answers using appropriate medical terminology.
1. A woman presents to your hospital complaining of pain in her left lower leg. You notice the area is tender to touch, red, and swollen. She is diagnosed with a deep venous thrombosis (DVT). This is her fourth DVT within 2 months.

A. If the woman asked you why she had had another DVT, what are some explanations you could give her?

B. If the woman was prescribed anticoagulant drug therapy, how might you explain to her the hemostasis mechanism behind this therapy?

2. A patient with chronic bronchitis is brought into the emergency room with complaints of sudden-onset chest pain, shortness of breath, and coughing up blood. His lab work shows hypoxemia, respiratory acidosis, and elevated red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit.

A. Utilizing your understanding of the process of erythropoiesis, why do you think this patient has elevated RBCs, hemoglobin, and hematocrit?
B. What is the most likely cause of the patients acute symptoms? How do you explain this?
3.  A 2-year-old girl with sickle cell disease is admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit for acute streptococcal pneumonia and respiratory distress. She has had repeated hospitalizations over the past 6 months for various systemic infections.

A. Her parents want to know what has changed over the past 6 months to cause her to be so susceptible to infection. How would you respond?
B. Why will pneumonia cause increased sickling?
C. What are the primary goals of treatment at this time? What are the rationales behind these goals?

Assignment Content

To complete the recommendation report you need to conduct some more in-depth research about the issue (causes, prevalence, statistics, liability/costs) AND methods to address/remedy/prevent the issue. Conduct a Boolean search via the College Library electronic databases to locate at least 3 scholarly or trade journal articles that discuss the issue and methods to address the issue. Finally, using your 3 sources prepare an annotated bibliography in APA format, so that the instructor can evaluate your sources for the recommendation report.

As the country attempts to recover from the economical implications of Covid 19, the effect of the same pandemic to the Sporting franchises such as NBA and NFL cannot be underestimated. Kindly write an argumentative essay providing a road-map to recovery for the major sporting brands in the country. Remember, you have to prove why the organizations are crucial to the economy as well.

One of the common tasks in academia (and in life in general) is to uncover information and organize it into a coherent and well-reasoned argument. Throughout the semester we have looked at a number of issues that relate to the themes that Orwell examines in Nineteen Eighty-Four. These discussions should provide a sufficient foundation on which to base additional research and continue the discussion.

Task: Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four as a warning of what could happen to society if it continued down a certain path. Bearing in mind that the specifics of the outcomes that he envisioned are unlikely to come pass, pick one of the themes in the novel and look at what other people have said about this theme, either in general terms and/or specifically in the context of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Discuss what you think is important with the theme and if Nineteen Eighty-Four is still relevant in contemporary society while incorporating the other material that you identified. You must use a minimum of five sources (in MLA format), three of which have not been used in this course.

NOTE: SINCE LITERARY TEXTS ARE FICTIONAL AND DO NOT NECESSARILY PORTRAY REALITY ACCURATELY, LITERARY WORKS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCE MATERIAL.

NOTE: SINCE DICTIONARY DEFINITIONS OF WORDS ARE COMMON KNOWLEDGE AND COMPILED QUOTATIONS (I.E., THOSE FOUND ON WEBSITES OR IN BOOKS) ARE NOT SUBSTANTIVE AND GENERALLY LACK CONTEXT, THESE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCE MATERIAL.

Length: 1250 1500 of your own words (5 6 pages)

NOTE: THIS MEANS THAT QUOTATIONS ARE NOT COUNTED AS PART OF YOUR WORD COUNT. ALTHOUGH YOU MAY USE QUOTATIONS, THEY SHOULD BE USED SPARINGLY RATHER THAN AS A SUBSTANTIAL PART OF YOUR ESSAY.

Grading Emphasis: developing an effective subject; writing for appropriate occasion and audience; expressing ideas; spelling; critical analysis; clear statement of conflict and each side’s position; research and use of evidence; appropriate tone; sentence variety; consistent agreement; elimination of non-rhetorical fragments; effective ordering of ideas; effective resolution; punctuation (period, question and exclamation marks, colon, dash, ellipses, parentheses, brackets); formatting; elimination of second person; adoption of formal conventions (i.e., no contractions, using one and we rather than I or you); including citations
