A Changing Social Service System

As a Human Service Professional, you will encounter clients who have a multitude of problems and needs. As our society changes, it is our responsibility to stay aware of the changes and how those changes impact the services we provide. It is also our responsibility to know what services and programs are available in our own community. Please use the assigned readings and use the Library to research peer-reviewed studies to support your post.

Please respond to the following:

1.    Locate a program in Duval or Clay County Florida serving one of the societal problems you identified in the unit 9 discussion.
o    Identify the name of the program and provide a brief description of the program including the services the program provides.

2.    How does the changes that have occurred in our society and the family unit impact the way in which we as Human Service Professional provide services?
o    Are there any special considerations we need to take into account when we are providing services to family (i.e., legal custody, extended family or non-biological individuals who are perceived as family)
o    Do Human Service Professionals need to be more knowledgeable of things like legal issues surrounding who can consent for treatment and the difference between consenting for treatment and ability to make educational decisions?

Ethical Dilemma

In human services, it is important to understand not only the ethical standards but also how to apply them in a practical manner. They are meant to be a guide that protects both the professional and the client. Having a comprehensive plan is important to the continuing development of the human service professional.

Create a scenario of an ethical dilemma that you have not previously used. It can involve any type of violation against the NOHS Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals.

Please respond to the following:

1.  Describe the case you have chosen, outlining all ethical issues presented by the actions of the human services professional.
2.  Discuss how your core values, which you shared in Unit 2, are reflected in your course of action.
3.  Analyze the actions in light of your readings and the NOHS Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals.
4.  Outline how you could handle the situation differently.
5.  Suggest some ways in which the astute and ethical human service professional can prevent such a situation from developing by being aware and proactive in their practice.

Bacon and La Mettrie

1.Based on your reading of Francis Bacons On Superstition and the Virtue of Science (1620), what is the most significant adversary to the natural philosopher? What do Bacons conception of natural philosophy suggest about the broader relationship between science and religion in the seventeenth century? 2. What does Julien Offray de La Mettrie means when he writes: Man is a machine constructed in such a way that is impossible first of all to have a clear idea of it and consequently define it. Risk Assessment

The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with risk assessment, vulnerabilities, and determining how assets may be impacted by terrorists.

First, select a terrorist incident type (bombing, assault with a vehicle, active shooter incident, etc.) related to a specific area or building at a typical university or K-12 school setting. Second, select three assets typically found at a university or K-12 School (personnel, facilities, machinery, specialized equipment, stored materials, information technology, etc.) which might be impacted by the selected terrorist event. Then, write an essay (750-1,000 words) describing how you would best defend against the terrorist event.
Do the following in your essay:

Explain how the terrorist event might impact the three chosen university or K-12 school assets. (Explain both short-term and long-term implications.)
Explain how threat and hazard identification and risk assessment (THIRA) was used to determine existing vulnerabilities and defensive strategies.
Describe the university or school staff response to defend the assets in coordination with first responders.
Describe the types of security, structures (buildings/campus grounds), and personnel recommendations that would make the university or school safer for the future. (It is important to consider the concept of soft targets.)

Foundation of Public Service

Through public administration we define who we are as a nation, from economics to pollution to civil rights. But what exactly does it mean to be a public administrator, and how does public administration influence the lives of citizens?
Write a 34 page paper in which you answer the following:
What is public administration? Why is it important? Provide an overview of its purpose and function in America.
Compare and contrast public administration and business administration. Provide two specific examples of how the fields are different and two examples of how they are the same.
What kinds of occupations are found in public administration? Provide three examples: one from nonprofit administration, one from federal government, and one from state or local government. Describe the job functions and requirements of these roles.
In thinking about your own career goals, how does knowledge of the field of public administration apply to your current or future plans?
