Fundamentals: Describe how you see the role of the for-profit firm within society.

To write a good paper, you should consider these questions:  What are the essential ethical values you think our society should respect?  What is the purpose of the for-profit firm in society? Who is responsible for ensuring that businesses act in accordance with societal values?

For our final project, each member of the class will research a technology they find related to one of the values we named, represented in the list above. What impact is the technology having on this value, or on this aspect of life?

Read the attached except (Chapter 4) from  The Economy of Cities (1969) by Jane Jacobs. Then upload or write a response to the following question: Jane Jacobs argues that specializing in automobile production brought Detroits economic development to a halt. In a few sentences, explain why.

Personal Statement

You are required to submit a Personal Statement for our program. The personal statement should describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program at the Viterbi School of Engineering, your preparation for this field of study, study interests, future career plans, and other aspects of your background and interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study

You must have an intro, thesis statement (tell me what you are going to prove),
arguments, citations (MLA format), and a conclusion (what did you prove?).
This is not a narrative. Do not tell me a story about how someone you knew did or did not
achieve the American Dream. You are arguing your point using the NOVELS as your evidence. You can use a personal story as part of your evidence but your paper should mostly reflect the novels in your arguments. Your arguments must have evidence from both novels to prove your point.

You will read a book related to economics, and provide a 400-600 word critical book review. This book review should include at least four paragraphs: a summary of the book, an evaluation of the books strengths, an evaluation of the books weaknesses, and a conclusion that says who the book would be recommended for (if anyone!). In addition, you will write one paragraph that reflects on what you learned from doing the book review.

To be judged satisfactory, (1) The title and author must be listed in the first paragraph, AND (2) The review must be 400-600 words long, AND (3) The review must have at least five paragraphs, AND (4) Each paragraph must contain at least 5 sentences, AND (5) At least one paragraph must be devoted to a summary of the book, AND (6) At least one paragraph must be devoted to evaluating the books strengths, AND (7) At least one paragraph must be devoted to evaluating the books weaknesses, AND (8) At least one paragraph must be devoted to making and defending the recommendation, AND (9) At least one paragraph must be devoted to describing what you learned from doing the book review.

You will find a current newspaper article related to economic issues, and write a three paragraph review of the article. The first paragraph is a summary of the article. The second paragraph is an analysis of the economic reasoning in the article. This paragraph should describe the cause and effect relationships that the article mentions or implies and should evaluate whether those cause and effect relationships are true, on the basis of economic principles. The third paragraph will answer the question “What did you learn from reading this article?”
