MAIN POST
Discussion 2: Reflect on the current course readings, your recent experiment, and Ted Talk video. Discuss something that intrigues, challenges or bothers you. What are you learning about our cognitive processes and the way the brain works? Cite the texts and use outside sources if appropriately integrated. Please post any questions or requests for clarification you may have regarding any of the concepts covered in the assigned readings for this week. The first post is meant to be a bit more scholarly or formal. Always use references here. The responses can be more casual but should also cite references when appropriate. Remember, this is your chance to demonstrate to me that you are reading the material and to engage in academic discussions about the reading material. Use personal examples if you like but link them to the literature.
StevenS POST
Hello everyone,
The brain and its functionality is remarkably complicated, and endlessly fascinating. New discoveries are being made every day by neuroscientists, discoveries that provide deeper insight into neural structuring, operationalization, and ultimately human behavior.
Previously assumed conclusions have been disproven, and with new discoveries were constantly adjusting our understanding of neural processes, however so slightly. There were early assumptions about the extent to which human functionality was determined by certain areas of the brain (localization)(Galotti, 2017, p. 41). While most human operations of thinking, acting, and being arent necessarily determined by only one area of the brain, we can certainly identify particular areas of the brain that are largely responsible for certain human behaviors, and when missing or damaged, all but remove the ability of the person to carry out certain functions (Taylor).
Plasticity is the process by which the brain continually changes (within the confines of its genetic capacity) as an adaptation to experience (Galotti, 2017, p. 46). Neural networks are seemingly just waiting for the need to reach out beyond their current capacity and to accommodate for the need to process more, to make greater connections (Hannaford, 2005, p 28). It almost appears to be driven by a divine intelligence.
The theatre metaphor (Baars, 1997) provides an interesting perspective to how the conscious mind might work. In this model it appears that the senses (both inner and outer) and ideas compete for the attention of the conscious mind. This model does well in capturing how so much is happening in and around a stage, but during the performance there is really only the ability to focus on a few things consciously while observing a performance. Even less when there is a spotlight on a performer and all else is dark. It is also interesting how Baars invites the reader to read the words inchoate; Papa Doc; and infundibulum without the inner voice echoing the words as theyre read. There appears to be an inner dialogue required for the reading and comprehension of words. In this, Baars attempts to detail the complexities to the executive functioning of merely one element of the vast array of experience we have everyday, and how consciousness seeks a way through it all.
One thing that stands out from the reading from Hannaford (2005) is the idea that new nerve cells are derived from stem cells, every day. I was sure that I had learned somewhere that new nerve cells in the brain did not form, and that once you reached adulthood, and when you lost your brain cells through certain activities, that they were never to return or to be replaced. However, Hannaford does detail that under certain circumstances new brain cells can be lost, particularly under moments of stress and struggle.

4MAT BOOK REVIEW INSTRUCTIONS
Please use the following format in preparing 4-MAT Book Reviews:
Name of book is: The Great Commission to Worship
1. ABSTRACT. Summarize what you have read into 300 words (1 page). Prove you comprehend the readings by writing a thoughtful summary. The abstract is not a commentary or listing of topics but rather an objective summary of major themes from the reader’s viewpoint. Use third person to retain objectivity. Abstact equals an overview of contents. This section should include a minimum of 2 footnotes to the text being reviewed.
2. CONCRETE RESPONSE. Be vulnerable. In no less than 150 words and no more than 1 page, relate a personal life experience that this book triggered in your memory. Relate your story in first person, describing action, and quoting exact words you remember hearing or saying. In the teaching style of Jesus, this is a do-it-yourself parable, case study, confession. You will remember almost nothing you have read unless you make this critical, personal connection. What video memory began to roll? This is your chance to tell your story and make new ideas your own.
3. REFLECTION. This is the critical thinking part of the review (not critical in the sense of negative, but in the sense of questioning). In no less than 150 words and no more than 1 page, describe what questions are raised for you in response to what you have read. Keep a rough-note sheet at hand as you read. Out smart the author by asking better questions than he/she raised in the book. Tell how the author could have made the book better or more appealing to those in your field of service. One way to begin this section is by stating what bothered you most about the book. This is not a place to provide an endorsement or affirmation of the book. This should be an objective, fair evaluation of the text. Use third person to retain the objectivity.
4. ACTION. So what are you going to do about it? In 2-3 pages, provide at least 3 action steps that describe what actions or changes you are going to make in your life, ministry, and/or work as a result of your reading. Action steps should be measurable and reveal a commitment to specific time, specific people, and identified steps.
5. Please provide a Turabian style* title page, pagination, footnotes, and Bibliography.
*Please contact the instructor to ask permission to use an alternate format style.
Total: 56 pages
Submit each 4Mat Book Review by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the module/week in which it is assigned.
CHAPTER 3: Business Governance. Ethics, and Social Responsibility: Discussion
There will be a discussion question or topic based on the “Chapter Questions” located at the end of each chapter. Please pick one and develop a line of thought to discuss.
The discussion question are open at the course beginning and close on the due date and time. No late work will be accepted. You can earn 25 points a week by participating in the discussion board. You will be graded on the quality of your responses, answers or questions, not merely on the fact that you participated. Please apply the Critical Thinking rubric to your work. Your posting must be Substantive:
– Providing a new thought, idea or perspective
– Citing and experience or example of what we are learning
– Adding a new twist on a perspective
– Critically thinking about an idea/concept
– Questioning or challenging a principle or perspective
–
I do NOT consider these types of comments to be substantive
–
– Very basic comment such as I agree or I disagree
– Simply restating what has already been said unless there is a direct purpose in doing so
– Disrespectfully disagreeing
– Pat answers that are not thought provoking
– Use of unedited dictation software comments
To receive the 25 points, you must do two things, First, reply to the posted question worth up to 5 points, and Second, reply to at least two (2) of your classmates responses worth up to10 points each. The discussion board is meant to take the place of the normal in-class discussion that you have in a traditional class structure. Each posting and reply should consist of a complete paragraph of a minimum of five sentences. I will be using a rubric for grading of discussion boards so please expect some changes to the syllabus as the semester progresses.
CHAPTER 3: Business Goverance, Ethics, and Social Responsibility
Chapter Written Assignments: At the end of each chapter there is Video Case Project. Please provide a one to two-page paper on the topic. This work should include an opening paragraph clearly restating the questions (DO Not simply copy the questions). Then apply at least one complete paragraph on each of the topics, followed by a closing or summary paragraph. Cites and structure should comply with APA v6 style. Each assignment will be worth 25 points.
Assignment must be submitted via the Canvas drop box before the assignment closes. This work will be reviewed by TurnItIn for a similarity check and no work over 25% will be accepted. Do not email me your work if you miss the drop box closure.
Each assignment will be worth 25 points, for a total of 375 points.
Again, assignment postings should consist of a minimum of five complete paragraphs with a minimum of five sentences each. The following Link will provide you with some refresher of the five-paragraph model (Links to an external site.). Cites and structure should comply with APA v6 (Links to an external site.) style.
Please apply the Critical Thinking rubric to your work. A Rubric will be used to review your assignments, look for changes and additions to the course and the Syllabus.
My doctor had sent me the following instructions to employ on my research proposal. Editing and rewriting is required in the light of the two following paragraphs to be done on my research proposal.
“My concern with your proposed project at this stage is in regards to the research question(s) that you pose: the originality of the project and its potential to advance the discourse (which is required for a PhD). A number of commentators have already been discussing the legal potential/impact of the TPNW, and it is fairly clear that it would be very difficult to see it as having binding customary effect without the support of the nuclear powers, which is not going to happen any time soon. I think its fair to say that the discussion has already moved to questions of e.g. political impact, possible shifts in perspective towards humanitarian underpinnings in discourse and the relationship between disarmament and arms control in this context. I am, for example, currently supervising a PhD considering some of these wider aspects, which is already half completed. I do not think it is possible to base a PhD project on the legal impact of the treaty at this stage in the way that you envisage. In addition, other aspects of your project, such as the correctness of the ICJs conclusions regarding the compatibility of nuclear weapons with IHL principles such as distinction is of course important, but has been written about extensively since 1996.”
“I therefore think it is necessary for you to identify a more novel research question or approach that allows you to move some of these debates forward. You clearly have excellent knowledge in this area as I say, your background research work in this proposal is excellent and I would be interested in working with you on a topic in the nuclear law field, but my view is that you need a stronger research question for a viable PhD proposal.”
Write a two page summary (double space) of the salient points from the case (see attached PDF), lessons learned, and correlation to readings/discussions from Week 1 and 2.
Note: To clarify and reiterate, you will do a combine summary of the case study and the readings from this week lesson and last week. You should have already read these chapters but here are the readings:
Readings:
Lesson 1:
Chapter 1 (Haddow, Bullock & Coppola, Emergency Management) and Chapter 1 (White, Terrorism and Homeland Security online reading)
Lesson 2:
Chapter 2 (by Sylves, This is the PDF I attached)
Chapters 2 & 3 (by Haddow Emergency Management online reading)
MAIN POST
Discussion 3,
Similarly to last weeks discussion about the Wests relationship to the East regarding ideologies and practices of psychology, what has been the Wests relationship to Caribbean, African or Indigenous traditions related to categories such as person, suffering, health, and the good life? How have other-than-Western traditions been silenced on these topics?
CLARAS RESPOND TO MAIN POST
Clara Discussion Entry
It seems one could look at the Wests relationship to Caribbean, African or Indigenous traditions related to categories such as person, suffering, health, and the good life by examining various points of reference, importantly, in view of cultural distinctions. From the assigned reading for this week, Larsson (2017) describes aspects of Eastern and Western society that indicate relative values held over time in relation to, for example, social life.
For example, the conception of time and personal existence (Larsson, 2017, p. 67) I would argue has contributed to the proliferation and stratification of economies and industries dominated by Western linear conceptions; which may include categories of person, suffering, health, and the good life. This distinction of conception, Larsson (2017), describes in relation to East and West, where Eastern conceptions of time and personal existence, philosophically, differ with regard to the conception of the life cycle from birth to death (e.g., considered in view of Hindu and Buddhist conception of reality). It seems in relation to Caribbean, and African traditions the conception of time and personal existence are important to examine in relation to Western philosophy, and where harmonious relationships may be mostly difficult to find, historically (e.g., in view of colonial rule).
The distinction in our conceptions of philosophical questions seems an important area to explore when examining the Wests relationship to, Caribbean, African or Indigenous traditions/ silencing on issues. Where additionally, values of social life (Larsson, 2017) may have also determined the extent to which the West has adopted healing traditions, and when traditions have been silenced on such topics.
However, despite the implications of relative values held by societies, it seems important to suggest the implications of transmission of healing practices, inter-culturally. Where Larsson (2017) argues that the movement and interaction of people (e.g., tourism or immigration) may encourage us to adapt at the inter-cultural level, which would seem to involve the transmission of practices to varying extents.
