Socio-Emotional Development

Compare the major developmental theories you have become familiar with from readings and content from Lesson 9. Compose thoughtful answers to the following “developmental difficulties.” Explain how you would use your understanding of one of the major theories (focusing particularly on Piaget and Erikson) to deal with each of the difficulties listed below more constructively.

A well-intentioned, but meddling, relative comes to visit the weekend before your child’s first birthday, in April. She cautions you that you must be spoiling the child, because he hides behind your leg and clings to you when she tries to give him a hug, and he did not do this when she visited at New Year’s. How will you explain what is happening with your child?
Your three-year-old constantly drives you nuts with attention-seeking behaviors while you are on the phone.
Your infant daughter puts everything in her mouth, including the dog’s food.
Your eight-year-old son is failing math; all he cares about is baseball.
Your eight-year-old son is failing P.E. and growing obese; all he cares about is Nintendo.
Your teenager has decided not to attend college in favor of joining the stage crew for a touring rock band.
Your nine-year-old son is being victimized by the class bully.
Your nine-year-old son IS the class bully. (NOTE: Pay close attention to the difference between the scenarios described in Questions 7 and 8.)
Your two-year-old daughter refuses to wear the clothes you pick for her every morning, making getting dressed a twenty-minute pitched battle.
Your thirty-six-year-old friend is showing symptoms of the classic “mid-life crisis,” buying a trendy new sports car, flirting dangerously, and alluding to leaving his wife.
Your sixty-eight-year-old neighbor is chronically depressed, feeling she has wasted her life.
Take your time and carefully integrate the concepts as presented in your text with the issues at hand in each vignette. Your responses should NOT be in the form of an integrated essay; rather, you should concentrate on each vignette (listed above) separately, with the goal of applying these developmental concepts to assist you in facing these real-life situations. One or two paragraphs per vignette will probably suffice but use your discretion to ensure each vignette if fully addressed in your response.  Some responses may be longer than others.

Prepare your responses in a single Word document, labeling each response carefully,

Write a 2,500-word paper addressing the following. What are the barriers to effective cross-cultural communication? How might these be surmounted? What do they fail to explain? What are the implications of your insights for cross-cultural communication in international business organizations?

How has having parents of the water sign of the zodiac sign influence affected your development? How might you think/act/behave differently if you had not been exposed to this influence?

For full points, your response should be a minimum of three paragraphs and should include references to the textbook and at least one additional source.  Use APA formatting when citing your sources, parenthetically and at the end of your essay. Please do not copy and paste from sources into these essay posts at all.  Only your own words should be present (no quotations of any size).  Please use full sentences in paragraph form at all times; bulleted or numbered lists are not appropriate for an APA essay.

Contributes to both conversations, with thoughtful, relevant, and contributed meaningfully to the conversation. Fully engages in the conversation with appropriate topic based responses.
Topic:  Describe the difference between race and ethnicity. Provide an example of each. Then Explain the difference between sex, gender, and sexuality

Respond to conversation 1:
Race refers to shared physical characteristics or traits that are biologically determined. African American is an example of race. Ethnicity is associated with cultures and includes common language, nationality, religion and ancestry. An example of ethnicity is Hispanic or Latino.
Sex, gender, and sexuality are interrelated, yet distinctly different. Sex is a physiological difference (determined by a person’s chromosomes) and does not always correspond with gender. Sex is a biological assignment that can not be changed. An example of sex is female or hermaphrodite. Gender is a socially constructed concept and refers to the role or individual’s concept of themselves. An example of gender is female. Gender can be changed and is based on social distinctions. Sexuality is related to sex and gender, but includes sexual feelings, thoughts, attractions, and behaviors. An example of sexuality is homosexual or bisexual.).

Respond to conversation 2:
Race and Ethnicity together is the major description of humans on Earth. Race is a persons characteristics as eye, hair, skin color and bone structure, examples are Italian as I am Half/Italian via my Father, my Mother was German. Ethnicity refer to cultural factors, including nationality, regional culture, ancestry, and language…You can have more than one ethnicity but you can have only one race even if its a mixed race.                 Then we have Sex, Gender and Sexuality…The differences starting with sex which determined by their biology, does not always correspond with their gender. Therefore, the terms  ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ are not interchangeable. Physiological difference between male and female is the term Sex… Gender is the term that refers to social or cultural distinctions associated with a given sex. Gender has been given acronyms to have a range of different preferences in ones sexuality… Such as L.G.B.T.Q., Gender Neutral, Queer etc.
