Response to Play 2 (MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING)
Here’s the link to the video: https://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/much-ado-about-nothing-full-episode/10194/
WHEN YOU ARE READY TO RESPOND ONLINE
You are not graded on your opinion, but rather how you express your opinioncan you give specific examples from the production that will illustrate your point.
The online responses for the plays will be longer than your previous discussion responses. However, try to be brief if you can between three to five paragraphs. Youll be hitting those points you think are most pertinent to your experience.
Here are the basic points you might touch on
What is this play trying to say about the human condition?
Remember, all plays are meant to entertain. But even the lightest, silliest comedy is saying something about people (as individuals and/or a collective)
Did this production succeed? What were its strengths? What were its weaknesses?
This is where you break down and analyze the various elements to see what works or doesnt. Consider the following elements and discuss ones you feel are most pertinent:
Text
Plot
Dialogue/language
Acting
Sets, costumes, lights and other design elements
Pacing of the play
Moments that stood out in the play
Special performance or production elements that stood out in the play
The audience. YES, the audience does have an affect on the experience.
Was the experience worthwhile? Why or why not?
Maybe a production was good and temporarily entertaining, but the subject matter was mediocre or is not relevant to us today.
Or, maybe the play was not executed well, but something about the themes are very relevant today and it made you ponder on the world or your life.
Or maybe just one element was soooooo good, it was enough to hold you and make you glad you went.
Or maybe just one element was soooooo bad, it didnt matter how good everything else was.
Or, maybe it was somewhat worthwhile for various reasons.
Or, maybe it was very worthwhile to you, but not for some other person. Or vica versa. Why might that be the case?

I hope that by now you have come to understand that in some ways the different aspects of cultures are consistent (e.g., why hunters and gatherers practice reciprocity) and that in other ways they are contradictory (that is, that there are often differences between what people say and what they do). American culture, of course, has its own contradictions and complexities. Ron Kovics book Born On the Fourth of July describes some important aspects of American life. What are some of the contradictions in American culture that he portrays? Can any of these be observed in our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Provide specific examples.
