Paper on a Contemporary Public Health Issue

Students will integrate literature accessed from reliable epidemiological and research databases to synthesize information pertaining to public health practice. Read three published journal articles on one public health issue. For each article, describe the target population, determinants of health, health disparities, and methods of health promotion (i.e. counseling, education, screening, policy enforcement) to address this issue. Length of paper will range between 3 to 5 pages. Please include a reference page using APA format citing literature from the past 5 years.

Outstanding (13-15 points): This paper integrates peer-reviewed journal articles that are relevant to a specific public health issue. The paper offers a clear description of the target population for each journal article. The next part of the paper clearly identifies and describes biological/physiological and/or psychosocial determinants of health for each target population across the journal articles. The paper then critically reflects on the implications of identified health determinants on health disparities and offers examples of potential health disparities that currently exist and/or could potentially arise. Last part of the paper offers feasible recommendations for future health promotion efforts to address these health disparities.

Case analysis needs to include 5 parts as following:
1, the issue (what is the problem/question of the case?)
2, Facts (only put relevant facts)
3, Rules (need to use review of the relevant tax law sources as references, Ex.: Internal Revenue Code (IRC), Treasury, Regulations, Revenue Rulings, judicial authority, court cases)
4, Argument/ analysis (how does the law apply to the fact?)
5, conclusion (answer to the question and the issue)

Instructions
Example Selection
You should select a business ethics issue that either has occurred or might occur in a veterinary practice and write an analysis of the issue and potential decisions/solutions, using the concepts introduced in your textbook. You might pick one of the following:

A situation currently in the news
An ethics dilemma witnessed in a veterinary practice either as an employee or a client
A high quality hypothetical business ethics issue in a veterinary practice (either one youve seen in books or film, or one you create)
Be sure to choose an example for analysis that seems interesting, difficult, or complicated.

Project Process
Step 1: Select an example for your analysis as outlined above.

Step 2: Perform your analysis. Apply the recommended high quality, ethical decisionmaking process described in your course book. Youll want to consider the facts of the situation, the ethical lenses, legal, regulatory, and any other more specific lenses that might be applicable. Describe how the key concepts apply, and explain why the decision is difficult or complicated. Recommend the course of action you believe is best taking all the relevant considerations into account.

Your textbook should be your primary reference. Your paper may also include independent and reliable sources (many of which you might access from your textbooks chapter notes). You should feel free to consult sources on the Internet. However, always make sure your work is original and well-documented. Notes from a website should include the source of the site. This is done to establish that the site is authoritative and not merely idle opinion.

Use APA style for citations and the Works Cited page. For information on APA style format see the Library.

Step 3: Write a first draft of your essay. Your paper should be written using a word-processing program, such as Microsoft Word or a Word-compatible program. Your analysis should be five to eight written pages. The essay should include a brief introduction, several paragraphs examining the key issues, your recommended course of action, and a conclusion that acknowledges arguments for and against your recommended decision. (Recommendation: Finish your first draft several days before you plan to finalize your paper. Its best to set it aside for a couple of days before moving on to the completion.)

Step 4: Complete your final draft. Carefully review your written essay, correct any errors, and submit your final draft to your instructor. (Recommendation: Read your essay out loud to yourself. Doing this will help make you aware of gaps, redundancies, and areas where the writing should be improved.) Include a title page and a bibliography of sources. The last page after the main body of the essay should provide a list of your reference sources.

Submitting Your Project
Each project is individually graded by your instructor and therefore takes up to a few weeks to grade.

Be sure that each of your three files contains the following information:

Your name
Your student ID number
The lesson number
Your email address

Instructions: Please carefully read the following assignment details in its entirety. There are many components to this particular assignment, and each component is graded.

This essay should be between 900 and 1000 words, excluding the required annotated bibliography.

First, you will choose a public debate that has at least two opposing sides (please do not reuse your Toulmin essay topic). As before, you need to research that topic in order to narrow the topics scope, so it can be easily discussed in 1000 word essay.

Note: Consider your audience as laymen in the field who have only general knowledge of your topic.

This essay must include a minimum of five sources.  Three should be peer-reviewed sources, preferably from the APUS databases.  From the library welcome page, click on Advanced Search at the bottom of the page and then check the “peer reviewed” sources box filter.

The following should clarify the term “peer-reviewed”:  http://youtu.be/rOCQZ7QnoN0. You may use eBooks; however, as discussed in your textbook, books generally are not as current as peer-reviewed articles.  You may also use primary sources (interviews, statistics, etc); however, these primary sources should be obtained from experts within that field.  If you cannot find strong sources for your chosen topic, then change your topic. If you have a question about the validity of a source, please contact a librarian: [email protected]

Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:

an introduction and claim,
background,
body,
and a conclusion.

Make sure your essay includes the following:

The background for your chosen topic,
A discussion of both sides of the debate, including core values or warrants underlying their arguments
Your common ground (Rogerian) solution/claim
An explanation of how that common ground claim can resolve the core issue for both sides.

After you have written your essay, please make sure to revise the content of your essay. Lastly, be sure to edit your essay by checking grammar, format, and smaller technical details. Please make sure your essay is written in third person.

The Annotated Bibliography

As with the Toulmin essay, an annotated Bibliography (AB) is due with your Rogerian essay.

The following is a sample of an annotated bibliography entry.

Clark, Irene L. The Genre of Argument. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1998. Print.

Clark’s textbook identifies the major steps to developing a well-researched and well-written argumentative essay. It is older, but still contains much useful material on process. Professional essays are included in the text as models. It will help me mostly with writing and organization, since internet research has changed since 1998.

Discuss how to support specific students identified in the principal’s e-mail. Identify the presenting issues. What services should a school counselor provide? Discuss how you, as the school counselor, will identify other students who may need support. Present a specific model a school counselor can use to respond to this crisis in the immediate future and subsequent weeks. Discuss how you, as the school counselor, will connect the students to community-based resources and help them understand the benefits.
