JOURNAL #1: COMPARE & CONTRAST “RUSH” & “SENNA”

To contrast something is to look for differences among two or more elements and to compare is to do the opposite, to look for similarities.

(WRITE ONE JOURNAL ON “RUSH” AND “SENNA”. DO NOT WRITE TWO JOURNAL ENTRIES.)

JOURNALS

Journaling is a great tool to learn cinema. By having a “conversation” with yourself about the films you see, you will learn what you like and what you don’t and why. Expressing yourself through the language of cinema is crucial. A filmmaker in any crew position is only as good as the thoughts they can express.

Please watch “Senna” in class and “Rush” outside of class, write, and submit a journal about the two films following the guidelines below.

JOURNAL GUIDELINES:

2 to 3 pages in length each. (@450 to 1000 words each)
Please clearly introduce each journal entry with the Film’s title
Should include your thoughts on the film’s subject, tone, style, music, and theme.
Should NOT be a synopsis.
Should address how the film was made – the cinematic construction of the films. How did the following help tell the story:
cameras
light
locations
wardrobe
camera style
color
music
editing rhythm/style
pathos
There is no “right” or “wrong” with the journaling. It should be a conversation with you. The idea is to look at film critically and express yourself through the language of cinema.

Do you have Netflix and Amazon Prime?

Although the Course Project Manual will be written as an academic paper in Microsoft Word, it is really a training manual for the identified audience. The intent is that HIT graduates can use this document and training presentation for interview purposes upon graduation to a potential employer
The original content must (1) be supplemented with specific legislation specifically (state and/or federal statute, regulation and/or legal guidance) and clearly related to the selected topic and audience, and (2) incorporate a minimum of four references, with one from the sources below. Keep in mind that paid or politically motivated legal sources are not authorized for the purpose of this assignment.

Reflect on the course including what you have learned and can take away to use throughout your careers.

However you choose to organize it, the paper should address the following prompt:

What were the most important, significant or meaningful things you have learned from the class?  Be specific and give examples from what we have read, done and discussed.  Make sure to explain why these were significant to you.  For example, they might apply to your past, current or future situation and/or they might also have helped you learned about yourself.

Format: Single spaced, 1-inch global margins, page numbers, Times New Roman 12 point font, references in APA format.

It is common to hear that “eastern” and “western” religions are very different in character. Do you agree? For your final essay you should assess this claim through a comparison of a single feature common to at least two “eastern” religions (Confucianism, Taoism, Hinduism and Buddhism) and two “western” religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). For “eastern” religions you should discuss one Chinese (Confucianism or Taoism) and one Indian (Hinduism or Buddhism) religious tradition. One of the “western” religions you discuss must be Islam. Thus your essay will focus on a common theme but discuss it with regard to four distinct religions. Once again an excellent essay will not only draw on the description of these religious traditions in Smith but will give illustrations from the scriptures found in Van Voorst. In general, the more narrow your theme, the better the quality of your essay will be. Also in general, you need to choose a theme for which there is support in the scriptures included in the Van Voorst book, or scriptures you can readily identify in another authoritative source.

for this week, we are discussing Chapter 9, Industrial Transformation in the North, 1800-1850, and Chapter 10, Jacksonian Democracy, 1820-1840. Briefly explain each question in your own words. (Small paragraphs about 5-6 sentences or more)

Chapter 9 questions.
1. Explain the process of selling western land.
2. What were the causes of the Panic of 1819?
3. Who were the key American innovators and inventors? How did they contribute?

Chapter 10 questions
1. Explain the scandals of Andrew Jackson’s first term in office.
2. What contributed to the Nullification Crisis?
3. Discuss the origins and creation of the Whig Party.

Use headers to separate the sections. First, summarize the main points of the book, Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession, and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California by Frances Dinkelspiel. Second, how is the book related to the study of white-collar crime? The second item, relating the study to white-collar crime, should account for at least 50% of your total paper.

Geoflicks are regular theatrical movies that are focused on geologic events, usually some type of disaster.  Some examples are: 2012, Volcano, Dantes Peak, The Core, and Jurassic Park.  This is a web page with a few more ideas: http://reelgeology.blogspot.com/ .  Id prefer you select a move that deals with some kind of geohazards like an earthquake, tsunami, or volcano. The SciFi channel has tons of really good (bad) geoflicks, and you could probably write a novel on one of those.  Most geoflicks take great liberties with the basic science that forms the basis for the plot.  What I hope to see from this assignment is that youve learned enough to recognize where these movies drift from reality and move towards fiction.  This is where you get to show me that you can apply what youve learned in this class.  I also hope this will give you some self-confidence in your understanding of this subject.

Reviews should consist of between 750 and 1000 words.  Reviews will be submitted via the “Assignment” section (formally Dropbox) of BlazeVIEW.  Read the movie review guidelines that are posted in the “Class Documents” section of the “Content” area of BlazeVIEW.  Late reviews will be docked 10 points.

All movie reviews must include the following information at the top of the review:

1. The name of the film (geoflick)
2. Medium used to view the film (History Channel, DVD rental, Netflix, YouTube…)
3. Approximate length of film
4. Classmates who watched with you (this is absolutely OK, feel free to organize viewing parties)
5. Your star ranking for the film (out of a total possible 5 stars)
