ASSIGNMENT: For this essay, you will select one of the sources you have found through your preliminary research about your research topic. Which source you choose is up to you; however, it should be substantial enough that you will be able to talk about it at length, and intricate enough that it will keep you (and your reader) interested.

In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the Touchstone.

The introduction of this paper will involve introducing the source: Provide the author, the title, and the context (where you found the source, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.)

You will then go on to evaluate the source on two levels:
Credibility: Using the information in this unit as a guide, evaluate the sources authenticity and reliability. Look at all the information that you can find about the source to establish the authors (or sponsors) trustworthiness.
Usefulness: Using a combination of summary and analysis, examine the source on a critical level. Determine what the sources purpose (thesis) is, and how it arrives at that goal. Examine its value to you and the project you are working on. How will it help you prove your own points? How might it come in handy to back up a claim (or address a counter-claim)?
Finally, you will include a conclusion which shows your final assessments on both counts.

Writing:

Each of these authors in some ways challenged Puritan theology even as they may have also embraced it. From each reading we see the beginnings of American mythologies. Morton is first and foremost literary, embedding his narrative with layers and layers of reference and allusion to canonical, biblical and mythological text. Sewall produced the earliest anti-slavery tract, which was to become a prolific American literary form. Anne Bradstreet was Americas first poet, and resisted Puritan norms while transcribing the domestic to the poetic realm. Finally, Mary Rowlandsons account initiated the genre of the captivity narrative, which she frames as Gods trial of her as a Puritan, the Chosen People.

Please choose two of the following questions to answer in 150-250 words each:

1.Mortons piece, because of its density of allusion, can be a bit of a difficult read. This said, however, he does craft a rich inter-textual tale. Selecting one moment in his text where he depicts his Puritan neighbors through several references, please unpack this strategy. What is the ultimate effect of his crafting the Puritans as he does.

In Sewalls The Selling of Joseph he engages and refutes multiple justifications for slavery. Drawing on one example from the text, how does he employ theology in this condemnation?

Bradstreets relationship to Puritan theology is often characterized resistance to it. Looking at the poem assigned for this week, “The Flesh and the Spirit,” and drawing on the text itself, where do you see this resistance manifest?

Rowlandsons harrowing tale captivated audiences and became a central motif in later American literature. Her particularly Puritan framing of her experience, however, was not embraced in later narratives or in the mythology. Drawing on one or two passages, how do you see her Puritan faith in her perception and depiction of her captors?

In MLA format, write an essay about Atwood’s “Variations on the word love” . Remember to include a topic sentence and thesis statement near the beginning of your essay and provide ample support for your assertions. Also be sure to properly reference quotations and sources and to include a Works Cited page at the end of the essay.

Some topics you may wish to consider are:
“Variations of the word love” addresses the overuse and thus the dilution of the meaning of the word “love.” The poem was originally published in 1974. Think about how the proliferation of the Internet and social media has since affected our use of language such as words like “love.” Do you “love” your new phone? Do you “love” caramel macchiatos? Do you “love” your children, parents, spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend? What does it mean to “love” an object as opposed to a person? Does the overuse or misuse of a word affect its meaning?

–For this assignment you should quote from the poem at least once, and the quotation must conform to MLA standards: the quotation should be properly introduced and grammatically correct with proper documentation in a Works Cited page at the end of the essay. If you choose to use secondary material, it must be quoted properly with proper documentation.
