Business, ethic, society — Writing intense course

In this paper, students:
(1) Identify an ethical dilemma in the context of their own workplace or career (or another business setting if they do not have work experience subject to the approval of the instructor);
(2) Identify the stakeholders and discuss how those stakeholders are affected;
(3) Discuss the nature of the ethical dilemma or conflict, explain why the situation represents a dilemma, and highlight what is important and interesting about it;
(4) Identify potential alternatives and discuss the pros and cons of each;
(5) And identify the preferred alternative and explain “why.”

In writing this paper, students must use normative reasoning and three to five ethical principles discussed in several class readings. At their core, students papers are meant to address a particular decision or a particular question about what one ought to do in an ethically charged situation in business. Thus, each paper should present a clear normative argument. Students papers should say what one should or should not do, or why an argument is or is not correct. It is essential to have a clear, well-reasoned argument, and the best papers will have something interesting or somewhat original to say. Clarity in writing and reasoning is critical. The top papers will also add value by saying something non-obvious

To encourage you to critically engage various forms of media, you are required to submit a Media Analysis essay (4-6 pages ) that applies the themes and theories used in the course to a movie, work of art, or literature. ENG104 requires each student to write an organized Research Report. The page length is 8 pages (not including reference page, table of contents and cover page). Out of those 8 pages, one whole page can be devoted to pictures, charts, or graphics. Students can either have one whole page of graphics, or there can be possibly 4 graphics that take up a quarter page each spread throughout the report.

The topic of the report is to connect to the student’s major, future profession, or any idea having to do with business, science, or health. Other than that guideline, students are free to choose their own topic. It is encouraged that students discuss ideas for a topic with their instructor. Many ideas students have for a topic can be made to fit the above requirement.

The report will incorporate elements of design such as headings, white-space and a table of contents.

All outside sources must be credited with in-text citations throughout the report and with a list of References or Works Cited at the end of the report.

Students must use either MLA or APA Style for crediting sources. Students may choose which style to use. It is recommended that students chose the style they will most likely be using in future classes or in their profession. The class instructor can offer suggestions on which style a student would most likely use in the future.

You are the manager of Acme Fireworks, a fireworks retailer who sells fireworks, puts on ground display fireworks, and large aerial display fireworks. The company started in the owners garage two years ago and now has 15 employees that you manage. The company started as a sole proprietorship, and the owner has never changed the entity. The owner has informed you that the company has received inquiries from several large businesses wondering if the company could create several fireworks displays on a regular basis. The owner told the inquirers that the company could fill such display orders, and a price per display was agreed upon. It was discussed that most of the cost for a fireworks display is for skilled labor, insurance, and the actual service of setting off the fireworks. No other details were discussed. The owner is anticipating that new employees will need to be hired, but he is worried that if the large orders for fireworks displays do not continue, the company will not have the funds to pay the new employees. The owner is now considering changing the business entity, but he does not know what entity to form or how to form it.

The owner has asked you to do the following:

Determine if the contracts with the businesses will be governed by common law or the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), and explain why.
Analyze whether the owner formed a contract with the businesses, and apply the five essential elements of an enforceable contract.
Explain the potential personal liability to Acme Fireworks if a spectator is injured by a stray firework from a fireworks display.
Discuss the different employment types and relationships relevant to agency law, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each type specific to Acme Fireworks.
Explain why Acme Fireworks should not operate as a sole proprietorship. Recommend a new business entity, and provide rationale to support your recommendation.

Include a section that introduces the scientist and why you selected them for this project. Bonus points for a scientists that represents an otherwise underrepresented group of people (in other-words, not an old, white male, ahem Darwin).

Describes the Genus that your genius studies. Consider addressing the following:
How to differentiate these organisms from other organisms
More specifically, what are some key identifying features
What morphological characteristics are shared among species in this genus
How do they reproduce? Move?
The Domain, Kingdom, and Phyla they belong in.
Who are they most closely related to?

How diverse is this genus? (i.e. approximately how many species in this genus)

What kind of human and ecological impacts do members of this genus have?

What types of methods or techniques are used to study members of this genus?

Describe any current research that is being conducted on/with members of this genus.
Some examples of noteworthy species in this genus
What you find most interesting about this genus of organisms.

What is the current status of members of this genus (you can choose to focus on a species here). Are populations increasing? Decreasing? Are any species in this genus on the Endangered Species List? If populations are declining, what is the primary cause?

In addition to addressing the above points, you will also need to include at least 1 journal article that reports research on this genus, or includes this genus in some type of experiment (it is okay to focus on a particular species within this genus). (See the separate handout for tips on finding journal articles). Provide a brief summary of this journal article, with an emphasis on what it has revealed about your genus of interest. (i.e. what do we now know about your genus, that we might not have known before this journal article?).

Your references should be cited in-text and in a bibliography.
