Each student will conduct an in-depth leadership analysis of a critical (crisis) incident or event and prepare a 5-7 page research paper outlining his or her findings (Ferguson Riots, Baltimore Riots, Hurricane Katrina, etc.). 
The paper should focus on the following:

An overview of the critical incident
Identify the various stages of the crisis (pre-crisis, acute, chronic and crisis resolution)
A critique of the leadership during the various stages of the crisis

Review the article entitled The Marks of a Leader which describes effective leadership attributes for a crisis team leader and the video containing clips from the Apollo 13 film.

The clip contains the immediate actions by NASA flight leader Gene Krantz and his team, who must devise a strategy to return Apollo 13 to Earth safely after the spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage putting the lives of the three astronauts on board in jeopardy. Finally, view clip 5 of the Dateline interviews with the astronauts and flight leader Krantz as they provide firsthand accounts of their leader actions and demeanor during this crisis.

Warm-Up Activity 4.1: Center for Ethical Leadership

Review the Center for Ethical Leadership website, located under your weekly resources. Focus on the 4-V model of ethical leadership, which provides a framework for individuals to address both internal value systems, and then align them with ethical behaviors leaders need to exhibit.

Assignment

For this task, assume you are a consultant, who has been contacted by a company that was recently rocked by a public scandal involving unethical behavior on the part of several members of an organizations senior leadership. This scandal has resulted in several dismissals and the founder of the organization emerging from retirement to take over as CEO until the situation is handled.  The company has asked its director of Human Resources to find someone to conduct training on ethical leadership to reduce the risk of similar behavior happening in the future. This training will be required for any managers who survive the crisis as well as any newly promoted and/or hired managers in the future.
