Much has been made recently of issues of free speech and political correctness. Discussion has been particularly focused campus activities in the U.S. colleges, as well as confrontations between opposing groups. Sometimes, disagreements stem from differing expectations of classroom topics and/or trigger warnings when discussing certain topics. On other occasions, debates involve who deserves a university platform to speak, protestor rights, policing, etc. Often, these debates have been framed around a supposed opposition between the two, as if we can expect either free speech or political correctness. Throughout pop culture, such controversies are also played out in terms of discussions and disagreements surrounding divisive rhetoric, stereotypes, obscenity, offensiveness, and censorship.

What do you think of this debate? Must we choose between free speech and political correctness? Or, can we imagine a compromise between the two? Do you believe that political correctness is an important and/or valid concern on college campuses? Why or why not? Respond in an argumentative essay in which you analyze multiple sides of this debate, take a position and defend it, and utilize relevant examples to make your case. Your 800-1200 word  paper should be in 12 pt. font (Times New Roman, Times, or Ariel), and double-spaced with 1 margins.

According to some critics, J.M, Coetzees Disgrace dramatizes what is called the sympathetic imagination, a concept in moral philosophy describing our capacity to sympathize with the suffering of others by imagining ourselves into their position (i.e. by putting ourselves in their shoes, so to speak).  After the rape of his daughter, and especially toward the end of the novel, David Lurie seems to have acquired this capacity for sympathy, a sympathy he is able to extend even to  animals (see, for example,  his relationship with the dog Driepoot). This ability to identify with the suffering of others through the power of his imagination is therefore key to Lurie’s transformation from an apathetic character to a sympathetic one.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa tried to apply the same principle. In order to establish some form of transitional justice in South Africa and help the country move forward, all those involved in the crimes of Apartheid must be brought together and reconciled, and this reconciliation is only possible if those involved are able to imagine, understand, and ultimately identify with one another’ suffering.

In a well-argued and well-organized essay, discuss the extent to which Coetzees novel supports OR challenges this idea of the sympathetic imagination as an important human quality that must be exercised in order to help South Africa  transition from a segregationist, violent regime to a democratic, multi-racial society.

Note: In your analysis, feel free to draw on the Miracle Rising documentary, but keep in mind that the main focus of your essay is still Coetzees novel.

4-5 pages, double spaced,  Times 12-point font.
Include your name, course code and section, professors name, and the date submitted  in the upper left corner of the first page.
Indent paragraphs (no extra space between paragraphs), use one-inch margins (on all sides) and number all pages.
Be sure to give your term paper a title. Try to come up with something descriptive and interesting, but not too long. (Do not use full sentences for paper titles)
No external sources are required; however, if you do use external sources, you must document them using the MLA style. Failure to do so will result in an F on the assignment.

Writing Assignment #2

Favorite Place

Tell me about your favorite place. Choose a very specific location! For example, you might tell me about a room in your house or room in the university or a particular restaurant or store at a specific mall, a specific place on the Corniche etc Dont choose an entire city or country!

Part 1

Write 15 Prepositional Phrases: 5 should describe a location; 5 should describe a time; 5 should describe some other condition.

Examples:

(location)  1) next to my desk

(time)          2) in the late afternoon

(other)        3) without any people

Part 2

Using the prepositional phrases in Part 1, write 15 sentences about your favorite place. Underline the prepositional phrase and the word (noun or verb) that it is describing.

Examples:

1) The window next to my desk is full of sunshine.

2) I love to go there in the late afternoon.

3) It is a quiet place, without any people.

You will be graded on grammatical accuracy and analysis as well as the variety of structures used. Hint! The more prepositions you use, the better.

Write a 4-6 page essay-style answer to one of the following questions:

Question I: Platos Euthyphro

What is piety, according to Euthyphro? Select one of Euthyphros answers to this question. On what grounds does Socrates reject the answer youve selected? Defend Euthyphros answer. (Note: for Question I, you should treat i) Piety is what the gods love; and ii) Piety is what all the gods love as distinct answers to Socrates question.)

This assignment involves three tasks:

Task 1

First, interpret Euthyphros answer. What are its key terms, and what does each key term mean? What does piety turn out to consist in, in Euthyphros view? Explain what support (if any) Euthyphro provides for his answer.

Task 2

Explain in detail Socrates objection to the answer you outlined in Task 1. Why is Euthyphros answer unsatisfactory, in Socrates view? Outline whatever assumptions you take to underlie Socrates objection. For example, does Socrates make certain presuppositions about what a correct answer to his question will look like? Explain.

Task 3

Imagine you are present for the conversation depicted in the Euthyphro. How would you defend Euthyphros answer from the objection you outlined in Task 2? Develop what you take to be the strongest original defence of Euthyphros answer. For example, do you doubt one of the Socratic presuppositions (if any) you outlined in Task 2? (Note: a mere rehearsal of an argument you find in the dialogue itself will not count as original.)

Question II: Platos Protagoras

According to Socrates in the Protagoras, it is often the case that great statesmen like Pericles have children who are mediocre in politics. Why does this fact support the view that political virtue cannot be taught, in Socrates view? Discuss Protagoras reply at 324d-328d. Does this reply succeed in answering Socrates challenge, in your view? Explain.

This assignment involves three tasks:

Task 1

Discuss the key observations you take Socrates to be making about great statesmen like Pericles. What support do these observations provide for the claim that political virtue isnt teachable, according to Socrates? Your job for Task 1 is to explain in your own words how Socrates uses the example of Pericles et al to support his skepticism about the teachability of political virtue.

Task 2

Reconstruct Protagoras reply to the challenge you outlined in Task 1. How does Protagoras undertake to overcome Socrates doubts that political virtue can be taught? For example, does Protagoras dispute Socrates observations about statesmen like Pericles? Or does he grant these observations, but proceed to argue that they nevertheless fail to support Socrates position that political virtue isnt teachable? Your job here is to outline Protagoras strategy for deflecting Socrates objection.

Task 3

Evaluate the argumentative strategy you outlined in Task 2. Begin by stating clearly and precisely your verdict as to the success of Protagoras strategy. Next, explain the criterion youre appealing to. What standard must Protagoras defence meet if it is to count as a success, in your view? Finally, explain in your own words why you think Protagoras either succeeds or fails in meeting that standard. Your job here is to explain why you are or are not satisfied with Protagoras case, and to defend this verdict.

Some Instructions:

Assignments must be written in 12 pt. font and double-spaced, with one-inch margins and numbered pages. Make sure that your name and student number appear at the top of the first page. Title pages are not necessary.

Your introductory paragraph must include a clear thesis statement. A thesis statement has two main components: i) A clear statement of the position you will take in the paper; and ii) a brief, clear outline of the case you will make in support of that position.

Make sure to explain any technical terms you use. What constitutes a technical term? Ask yourself the following question: Would a friend of mine who has never taken a philosophy course readily understand what the term means? If the answer is no, then its a technical term. Explain it.

Use direct quotations (i.e. ____) only on those rare occasions when you want to call attention to the authors precise wording. Otherwise, explain the reading in your own words and cite accordingly in parentheses or footnotes. Any standard citation style (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago) is acceptable, but please remain consistent in your paper. Make sure to give citations for Platos dialogues using Stephanus numbers (e.g. 434a; 435a-436b). If you have any questions about citations, ask the instructor.

Use the following format: ( please add the answers separately… 1-, 2-

Part 1:

1. Who was Caroline Pratt?  If you do not recognize her name, do a Google search and explain her connection to block play in early childhood education.  Utilize Kashins Blocks are Essential blog post listed above.                                                                                      (Make note of the Caroline Pratt quote within that blog post in your answer.)

2.After reviewing the online resources above, explain, in your own words, what STEM education is in early childhood.  Cite information from the material above and uploaded here.

Part 2:

Now please turn your attention to the video clip and still photos uploaded.  This material is courtesy of Congregation BNai Israel Preschool and as such is not to be used for any purpose other than the completion of this assignment for this course.  For your information, the child in this clip is 4 years of age.

1.Describe the context and setting of the experience you are viewing in the video clip as well as in the still photos provided here.  Where does this experience occur, how did the adult set up the provocation, how many children are involved with it at one time, and what materials (quantity and quality) are provided to the children?

2.  Look for evidence of the following aspects of construction play in the video clip and images provided in Module #6, (not all areas will be present, focus on the main aspect you are seeing/hearing).  What scientific aspect, or multiple aspects below,  best relates to what you are seeing in the video clip?  Explain your answer.

Role-playing:  Building a farm, city, etc.

Problem-solving:  Figuring out how to do something and experimenting with the materials.

Cooperative Play:  Working with peers to make things together.

Oral Language:  Talking about what is being made and how to accomplish it

Pattern:  Using the blocks/objects to create a pattern (Ex:  a fence, building, etc)

Measurement:  Figuring out how many blocks/objects are needed to make the construction equal

Classifying:  Sorting blocks/objects according to similarities in size, shape, etc.  Might be done in cleaning up or in building.

Balance:  Keeping structures standing, avoiding toppling over.

Vocabulary:  Utilizing terms to support understanding.  Ex: rectangle, square, triangle, bridge, etc.

Size Relationship:  Comparative terms…short, shorter, long, longer, longest, etc.

Architectural awareness:  Demonstrating understanding of components of structures…base, supports, roofs, doors, etc.

3.  Review the following information from Diane Kashins blog post, specifically the following quote:

Bruner (1960) adopts a different view and believes a child (of any age) is capable of understanding complex information: ‘We begin with the hypothesis that any subject can be taught effectively in some intellectually honest form to any child at any stage of development.

a.  How would you describe the role that this childs classroom teacher took in creating a place to allow children to think?

Utilizing the Do You Know Anything About Loose Parts? resource, as well as the Malaguzzi Image of the Child resource:

b.  Connect with the Reggio Emilia concept of the Image of the Child as being capable and competent. Make the case for how children can and do take everyday materials and demonstrate to adults that they are capable of complex thought.  Cite the video as your evidence.  Be specific….what is complex about his play with these materials provided to him?

4.  Reference to refresh yourself of questioning with young children as a means of supporting their play, specifically, Promoting Inquiry-Based Science Education.

a.    Develop 3 questions using I wonder…’, or what would happen if… formats that you might use to initiate discussions with this child, in order to acknowledge his work, and further encourage his use of math/STEM concepts in play.

Predictive question:
Reactive question:
Recall question:

5.  Summarize the role of the teacher in supporting authentic experiences via provocations in the classroom:

a. What is the role of active teacher observations of childrens play?  Specifically, what was this classroom teacher able to learn about this childs understanding of STEM concepts, engineering in this case, by simple utilizing loose parts materials, observing his play, and documenting it through photo and video?  How would this compare to a traditional classroom which was also trying to implement the same aspects of STEM learning?

b.What is the role of questioning?

c.What is the role of provocations/invitations with loose parts?

Write an educational philosophy for a future bilingual teacher.
Develop an essay outlining a philosophy of education based on your current professional and personal experience (bilingual teacher 2nd grade Spanish).  The Educational Philosophy must be between 600 – 1000 words, be written in APA style* with clear and concise writing, and without grammatical errors.
-Make the Educational Philosophy Statement brief and well written
-Use a narrative, first-person approach. This allows the philosophy to be both personal and reflective.
-Be sincere and unique. Avoid clichs, especially ones about how much passion you have for teaching.
-Make it specific rather than abstract. Ground the ideas in 1-2 concrete examples, whether experienced or anticipated. This will help the reader to better visualize you in the classroom.
-Be discipline specific. Do not ignore your research. Explain how you advance your field (bilingual education) through teaching.
-Avoid jargon and technical terms, as they can be off-putting to some readers. It should not feel like a resume or CV.
-Be humble. Mention students in an enthusiastic, not condescending way, and illustrate your willingness to learn from your students and colleagues.
*Note about APA- For this assignment requires to use APA style, but do not use references or citations. APA style should be used for the general formatting of your essay and your title page. You will not need an abstract for this paper.
