At the heart of the successful management of people in organisation, is understanding of diversity and inclusion. Research shows that the widespread failures of organisational inclusion and progression practices to remedy previous biases. Indeed some have suggested these efforts may be counterproductive and merely strengthen bias and resistance against changes (Dobbin and Kalev, 2016). Organisations therefore need to look again at their policy and practices and use evidence to develop more successful interventions.

Your assignment is to create a short training intervention for an organisation designed to increase inclusion and reduce discrimination and bias. (You can pick the organisation you are designing this intervention for. We are more interested here in the evidence-based practices and materials you include rather than your choice of organisation.)

Your proposed intervention should include the following minimal elements:

I. What is meant by the (term/ phrase) self-serving bias?

II. How does self-serving bias affect individuals and their behaviour towards others?

a. in society

b. in organisations

III. How might organisational practices

a. create,

b. support and

c. deepen gender, age and/or ethnic-related disparities in terms of (fair treatment and equal opportunity, chances promotion and voice)?

d. how do these practices influence self-serving bias the stereotypical attribution present in organisations and embedded in un-reflexive assumptions within work organisations and society at large?

IV. What steps can an organisation take to address such self-serving biases?

V. In preparing for this presentation, what have you learnt from this exercise about your own biases towards others? In the light of these insights, how would you now act differently, in say a leadership or management policy-making position or situation?

The presentation you should include reference to appropriate theories and frameworks from the study of Human Resource Management and organisational behaviour. There is a folder of additional resources to help you on Moodle. You should use Harvard style referencing in the final slides.

The assessment of your group work will comprise two elements: A recorded group presentation on zoom with its accompanying slide deck PDF , and information aggregated from your individual rating’s of each members’ contribution to the presentation. This rating includes four elements:

Planning and organising of the group’s task;
Assisting content of the presentation including theories and ideas and their quality control
Supporting and helping others in the team
Developing and delivering the final presentation.

For this discussion, you will visit the Rutgers University Oral History Archives pertaining to World War II.    You will see when you follow the link that the archives are split into different “theaters” — European, Pacific, CBI (China-Burma-India), and American.  For the purposes of this assignment, it does not matter which location you choose.

Inside each of the sections, you will find dozens of interviews with combatants and other individuals involved in the war effort.  Most of these interviews are 50 or more pages long, and I do not expect you to read an entire interview for this assignment.  Instead, I want you to choose any interview, and then skim through the interview until you find the soldier’s recollections of their time while in the service (the early parts of the interview usually discuss their life before the war.)

While you are skimming the interview, choose any paragraph or response consisting of ten or more lines long that catch your eye, for whatever reason.

Write a short reflection (150-200 words) on the recollection, which the rest of the class will see.  This reflection could be what you found interesting about the passage, and what else you would like to know about the references mentioned in the selection.  You could pose this as a series of questions, or you could even analyze the passage further.  You could bring in the biography of the interviewee (there is usually a short capsule biography of each of the combatants.)

Since I am allowing you to chose your own topic for your paper, I expect you will already have some opinion on the topic. (For example: Writing on abortion as a pro-life supporter)

Within your paper, however, it is important to look at both (or all) sides of an issue. Therefore, I would like you to adhere to the following guidelines in your paper.

First, provide an introduction to your topic. Within this introduction, provide a general back-ground to your topic. (To stay with the abortion example, give me a background to the pro-life movement). Also, the introduction is the ideal place to explain the importance of your topic as well as how your topic relates to ethics.

Second, provide the case for the particular topic you are describing. If you are writing a paper on the pro-life movement, provide the reasons for supporting this cause. Be sure to back these reasons up with research (articles).

Third, provide evidence against the situation you are writing about. If you choose to write about the pro-life movement, then you would use this section to offer evidence which supports the pro-choice movement. In the second and third sections, you should be careful to stay away from personal bias. Simply report the findings of experts in the field that you are researching.

In the last section, summarize the information you have presented. Then describe your opinion about the issue (are you in favor or against) and explain why you feel this way based on your evidence you have reviewed. Did the evidence change your opinion at all?

This paper should be between 750-1000 words, double spaced, 12pt. Times New Roman, 1 inch margins. Additionally, you should reference at least 3 sources (cite using MLA or APA format). Your sources should also be listed in a bibliography.

**You can NOT use Abortion or the 2nd Amendment as a topic choice** Instead choose a contemporary topic. Choose something currently affecting the world. For helpful information see page 340 in your text under “A contemporary Moral Issue” section of how to write an ethics paper.

This film is about the final days of the war in Poland, focusing on the resistance fighters. It shows the complicated dynamics within a country that had barely been independent for 20 years before it was invaded and divided up between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. At the end of the war, while much of Europe was being liberated from Nazi occupation, Poland was preparing to be under Soviet rule indefinitely. The experience there contrasts sharply with the atmosphere of triumph in other parts of Europe, and shows how the impact of the war did not end with the Armistice. It also gives us a preview of Cold War attitudes rethinking the effects of the war, since the film itself was made in 1958 by one of the most famous directors, Andrzej Wajda and starred an actor who was known as the Polish James Dean.
After watching the film, your post revision assignment is to revise and expand your posts from Weeks 5 on why people go to war incorporating ideas and contrasting your impressions of war from The Film is “All Quiet on the Western Front” with your impressions from Ashes and Diamonds.
