After reading Lynn Nottage’s Las Meninas, think about how the theme of Cultural Identity (discussed in M6S2: Diversity in Contemporary Theatre presentation) is addressed in this play.

In 300 to 500 words, evaluate the importance of Cultural Identity to at least two of the four main characters of the play (Louise , Queen Marie, Nabo Sensugali, or King Louis XIV).

You may wish to investigate how each characters’ cultural identity affected her or his language, relationship to other characters, relative power, self-esteem, costume/visual appearance, etc.

The paper should have a brief introduction followed by one or two body paragraphs and a brief conclusion.  Your paper must contain at least 2, well-integrated examples of textual evidence from Las Meninas in order to support your claims.  Since no outside research is required, I will not require a Works Cited page or in-text citations for this assignment, but I will be looking for your effective integration of your textual evidence into your writing.  Please observe all other style, grammar, and punctuation guides for formal, academic writing.  Remember, this is a paper, not a discussion or blog post, so do your best to avoid 1st person references (“I,” “me,” “my,” etc.) and proofread your work for typos, spelling, and accuracy.  I highly recommend reading your paper out loud as one of your proofreads, as this is a good way to catch grammar, syntax, and sentence structure issues.

watch the video titled Are we in control of our own decisions? by Dan Ariely, and think about the examples of influential decision-making he gives in his presentation.  Managers of organizations also face making business decisions and having factors outside of their decision-making process influence the outcome.

For your second essay, you will read an article on Cultural Appropriation, and then either agree or
disagree with the authors position using the material youve read this section for support.
First, read the article by K. Tempest Bradford at the end of this document. Ive also posted the link
to the original document in Canvas.
Second, take a position on the authors main point, which is that cultural appropriation is wrong.
Third, develop your essay by briefly stating the authors thesis, and then present your argument
either supporting the authors position or going against it. In either case, in your thesis state
specifically why you think the author is right/wrong.
Fourth, for support use only the readings youve done for this section (including any optional
readings). Do not do any additional research for your paper.
You need to refer to at least two of the readings/selections from this section on cultural
appropriation for support.
This is an essay, and so you should develop it using the elements of introduction/attention
device, thesis statement with main points, body paragraphs, direct quotations/paraphrasing,
and concluding paragraph/statement.
In terms of development and structure, you should refer to the list of Rhetorical Modes from
Week 8 (comparison/contrast, illustration, description, cause/effect, etc.). The modes help to
organize your thoughts and create a sense of purpose and direction for your essay.
For citation purposes, choose from either MLA or APA format, and be consistent throughout.
You need direct quotations and/or paraphrases from the sources you choose.
You must have a Works Cited/References page, and that page should always start on a new page
after the main text of your essay (use Page Break in MS Word to start a new page in your
document, and the text will start at the top of the new page).
Your paper should be written in 12-point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins.
A good length is approximately 2 and one-half to 3 pages, not counting your works
cited/references page. Do not write more than 4 pages of text, and no less than 2 full pages.
I will give you an optional dropbox where you can submit a draft of your working thesis
statement for feedback; watch Canvas for announcements.

Research question: How do casinos consistently game their own systems to always be the winner?

Literature review for the resources

In a 5 page paper, select four sources from your second Annotated Bibliography and discuss how your second chosen discipline approaches your research question. You should organize this type of paper along thematic lines. It should not be a collection of one-page article summaries, moving from one article to the next. Rather,  commonalities and differences among your sources should provide the organizational framework for your paper. If done correctly, a single paragraph will include the views of multiple authors. Consider the following questions when thinking about your source material: (1) What are the primary questions within that discipline concerning your issue? (2) What data does the discipline collect to better understand the subject? (3) What do scholars in the discipline view as the primary sources of contention or conflict within the issue? (4) What solutions do scholars provide?

As per the attached Analytical Research Paper Rubric, “A” papers will:
1. skillfully connect the work of scholars within the discipline with the broader topic and specific issue.
2. make pertinent, thoughtful, and perceptive connections among sources to reveal previously unknown patterns, differences, or similarities related to issue.
3. contain concise paragraphs, strong topic sentences, smooth transitions, and a coherent and logical progression of argument.
4. contain no errors in spelling, usage, grammar, syntax, and formatting, and adhere to proper MLA citation style
Be sure to follow the attached Assignment Rubric

Papers must be in a Word document or pdf file with 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double spaced, with one-inch margins, and follow proper MLA citation style.
