Watch the videos at https://www.ubs.com/microsites/nobel-perspectives/en/laureates/richard-thaler.html . In 2017, economist Richard Thayler won the Nobel Prize in Economics for his contribution to behavioral economics focusing on the role of nudges in business practices. But these nudges have very far-reaching implications in society.

Think about the following examples:

In the past, users needed to opt OUT of sharing information with online sites like Facebook. Now, typically, you need to opt IN.
In some countries, voter registration is automatic when a person is eligible based on census records.
Voter registration and/or voting is compulsory (required) in many countries (122 out of 226 countries or territories).
Many employers nudge employees to save for retirement by making the default option to contribute to a 401k plan, where employees need to opt OUT if they do not want to contribute.
Grocery stores often place sugary breakfast cereals on shelves about 3-4 feet off the ground.
Setting low opioid prescription default quantities in electronic medical record orders decrease opioid prescribing by doctors for acute pain.
For the discussion:

Discuss the impacts (benefits and costs) of these nudges.
What are some other nudges that you may have noticed out in the “real world?”
Can you suggest some nudges that would be beneficial to society?
How would they be beneficial?
Who should be doing the nudging, employers, government, your peer group?

Annotated Bibliography

You will submit an annotated bibliography for 2 of your sources for the week 7 paper.  Each source will have the correct citation entry for the citation style you are using, as well as an annotation, which is made of a paragraph or two telling the reader about the source.  One (1) of the sources should be a peer-reviewed piece from a journal in the APUS Library.

To help you gather sources, review the assignment description for the week 7 analysis paper.  Pay special attention to the article linked there and the steps for identifying your problem. Here is the link to the article: “Looking for Trouble: Finding Your Way into a Writing Assignment.” This piece shows how to write about solving a problem, using the steps of noticing, articulating, posing questions, and identifying what is at stake.

After you have identified your problem, you can start choosing your sources and build an annotated bibliography.

Here are the steps you will take to build your annotated bibliography:

First, determine what kind of source you are using. Is it a book? Journal article? Blog? Using one of the citation guides in the APUS Library, find the model that matches your source. Hint: if you are looking at your source on your computer, you will go to the category of electronic sources to start looking.
Copy that model and paste it into your bibliography.
Then put your source in the correct citation format, following the model you just copied and pasted.
Finally, write a brief annotation of that source.  The annotation should describe the main ideas covered in the source as well as an evaluation by you for the source’s usefulness for your project. The handout attached below has more information about what should be in the annotation.
Please be sure that one (1) of your sources is a peer-reviewed article from a journal in the APUS Library.

Follow the student example included below. You will see the model, the citation, and then the annotation for the source.  The rubric shown below shows that you will be graded on having the model for the citation format, so dont forget to include it.
The attachment “Peer Review Defined” has helpful information from the APUS Library on peer-reviewed sources.
The attachment “how to” handout has some helpful tips on what to include in an annotation.
Submit your assignment as a Word document attached to the assignment link so it can be processed on Turnitin.

Forum Objective: Learn how to write a counterargument/rebuttal paragraph for the week 7 analysis paper. Learn to analyze both sides of an issue.

In week 7, you will be submitting a problem analysis paper.  Your in-depth analysis may involve your looking at your position on an issue, but also at the opposing position, the view that is the opposite of yours.  This week you will practice looking at the opposing view, recognizing its strengths, and pointing out its weaknesses. One result of this process is that you will most likely feel more confident about your stance, as you have thought about and prepared responses to objections that you might face.

Step 1: Start by reading On the Other Hand: The Role of Antithetical Writing in First Year Composition Courses, which is linked here. https://wac.colostate.edu/docs/books/writingspaces2/krause–on-the-other-hand.pdf

Step 2: Considering the principles explored in this article, as well as lesson materials previously covered, write two (2) paragraphs for the paper you just finished (the week 5 position paper).  First post your thesis statement (a single sentence that is not a question) in bold; then post your counterargument paragraph and rebuttal paragraph for your persuasion paper that you just finished.

One paragraph will be the antithetical paragraph, offering a view that opposes yours. This is your counterargument paragraph.Ease your reader into the paragraph. Maintain your identity as the writer who supports your stance. You might start your counterargument something like this, There are some who feel this view on ________ is flawed. They say that _________ “
The second paragraph will be the reinforcement of your thesis, addressing the objections identified in the counterargument paragraph.  This is your rebuttal. Make the transition from counterargument to rebuttal a smooth one. You can use wording like this to get into your rebuttal: While some objections have been made regarding _________, the case for _________ is still a strong one.

As you move into the week 7 paper, remember these principles of examining a viewpoint that is the opposite of your own. Your problem analysis paper in week 7 may be stronger by recognizing solutions other than the one you are suggesting. Looking at those solutions and then explaining why yours is preferred is one way to give you more credibility.

Sample Initial Student Post

Thesis: Food from McDonalds is good for ones health because McDonalds serves fish sandwiches, chicken sandwiches and nutritious salads.

Counterargument paragraph (state what the other side thinks)

McDonalds serves unhealthy food because McDonalds’ main sales are high calorie drinks, fatty hamburgers, and oily French fries. Only a small minority of total McDonalds’ sales are healthy, such as salads and fish sandwiches. In addition, McDonalds hamburgers are 1,000 calories per serving.

Rebuttal paragraph (refute the counterargument)

It may be true that McDonalds sells unhealthy hamburgers; however, McDonalds’ salads contain lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, and other healthy ingredients. Leafy green vegetables have antioxidants that help fight inflammation, heart disease and cancer. Eating McDonalds’ salads is good for one’s health….

Create an imitations of A Tricky Leak.

By “imitation,” you should create your own flash-fiction piece (between 500 and 1,000 words) that should do the following things:

follows the tone of the original piece
uses the fantasy genre in order to give “the feeling of the feeling” of some uncomfortable or annoying situation
uses characters that embrace either some kind of magic or high technology
has a sense of humor, but isn’t super-jokey or laugh-a-second
It should not do the following things:

follow the same plot line with slight alterations to character or situation
use the same basic situation with slight alterations to plot line or character
any other permutation of the previous two points
That said, we can obtain a usable outline that follows the situation in general:

A character is introduced, with some very mildly humorous details.
The character is in an immediately problematic situation that they don’t want to be in.
They try to resolve the problem, but the problem’s intensity escalates. There is some specific scene or plot point that illustrates this intensity.
This escalation in turn escalates an issue with another character.
The character uses magic (or high tech, or something of that nature) to solve the problem.
The story wraps up with an imperfect resolution that emphasizes some specific reception of a message of some kind.
In conference, we discussed one possible category of subject matter that could be used to formulate a message, or specific reception: class or power conflict between two characters.

Note that A Tricky Leak doesn’t take a hard stand, one way or another, on the nature of class/power conflicts, or try to teach the reader a big lesson. It simply describes a problem and illustrates a flawed, though still emotionally satisfying resolution.

Be creative and enjoy this task. It’s probably not the best idea to settle for the absolute first thing that comes to you.

When you’re done, review your work for grammar and punctuation and effective paragraphing. If your story has dialog and you’re uncertain about how to format it, then look it up or send me a question.

Turn the story in here as a link to a Google doc.
