Requirements:

In our discussions of short stories, poems, and T.C. Boyles novel The Tortilla Curtain, many topics/issues connected with multiculturalism have been raised. In this essay, you will demonstrate careful analysis of one of these topics/issues as presented in 2-3 texts from the semesters readings. This essay is a literary analysis of theme(s) the texts explored.

Book= The Tortilla Curtain by T.C Boyle

1.      Quoting from texts:

o  In order to write a literary analysis of texts, you must quote specific words, sentences, images, etc., from the texts as evidence to support your observations. Because this is a relatively short essay, you need to be deliberate in the quotes you choose. They should not be long because most of the essay should be your own discussion of the quotes relevance to your essays thesis.

o  You should not quote events. If you are going to talk about a specific event in the story, you only need to identify the event and then move directly to your point about the events relevance to your thesis. For example, you could begin: When  _______ .  By beginning with when, your reader knows where you are in the story.

o  Consider how much your reader needs to know. For this essay, your reader knows the texts, so you do not need to provide extensive plot summary. Your reader only needs enough information to know which scene you are talking about. However, you need to say quite a lot when you are discussing your thoughts about the book.

o  Make sure every quote includes an in text citation in MLA style. You must include page numbers for quotes always!

o  Because you are using more than one text, your in-text citation needs to include authors last name AND page number.

o  Warning: If you are retelling large chunks of the story, your essay is in trouble! This essay is not a book report. It is an analysis.

2.      Secondary sources are prohibited. In this essay, you are exploring your own thoughts about the texts. Therefore, do not consult outside sources. Trust your own thinking, class discussion, and online discussions.

3.      Incorporating your own experience:

o  In this essay, you are welcomed to draw on your experiences as a way of expanding your discussion.

o  If you choose to incorporate a personal experience, it must be brief and must illustrate a point you are making.

o  Keep reminding yourself that this essay is about texts. If you catch yourself writing more than a few sentences about your experience, pause and ask yourself what the connection is to texts.

4.      Format & Correctness

MLA style is required for formatting this essay. You are required to use MLA heading and citation format. If you are not sure what MLA looks like, look it up! On Blackboard, I provided a navigation link to Purdue Universitys Online Writing Lab (OWL). Use the link for access to OWLs MLA reference guide. There is no excuse for not following MLA.
Proofread, proofread, proofread! Although typos are a part of life, there is a difference between the occasional typo and a pattern of errors. At the very least, essays must be free of capitalization errors, misspelled words, sentence fragments, run on sentences, and punctuation errors. The essay should be written primarily in one verb tense. Careful attention to correctness demonstrates respect for both your ideas and for your reader.

Chapter 16
Colleen Matthews had just turned 22 when her hard work finally started to pay off. Six months earlier, Colleen had graduated from a state university with a masters degree in accounting. Colleen graduated with honors and was one of the youngest in her class. Unlike most of the intellectuals she had studied with throughout her career, Colleen was extremely social and had great communication skills. After graduation, she took a job with a well-known regional accounting firm. The firm specialized in assisting companies with their technology problems. Colleen knew that the connections and knowledge she would gain working for the firm would be beneficial throughout her career. Now, six months after graduation, she has a full-time job offer with one of the firms strongest clients.
Within a few days on her new job, Colleen had adapted to her new environment. Colleen and two other recent graduates were running the entire accounting department. However, it wasnt long until Colleen began to notice that something wasnt right. After a few weeks, Colleen realized that the firms executives were participating in illegal transactions. The company executives were importing expensive technological products from China and selling them under the table to contacts unknown to Colleen. Once the firm received the products at the shipping dock, the executives personal employees marked the products and took them to a separate location. The entire operation was done with little paperwork. The money received from the special products received special attention. Colleen was told to report this inflow of cash in an account called Personal Executive Consulting Services. This allowed the executives to personally use the money at their convenience.

1. Does Colleen have a responsibility to report the apparent fraud?

2. If so, to whom should she report the fraud?

3. Assuming that the fraud has been continuing for several years, what would be the tax ramifications to the executives of not reporting earnings on their tax returns?

4. Even though the money is from illegal sources, are the executives required to report the income on their annual tax returns?

5. Earlier in the book, we discussed the net worth method. How do you think the net worth method can help prosecutors determine the extent of these executives illegal income?(1 page minimum )

Chapter 17
A number of security/intrusion detection firms exist in the market. Research one of these firms and report on its services, costs, and benefits.

1. Would you hire a firm like this for a start-up company?

2. Would you hire one for an established, small company?

3. Would you hire one for a Fortune 1000 company? Why?

When writing about this essay , you follow the same basic conventions required of any expository essay. That is,

–state a thesis in your introduction

–develop that thesis by giving supporting reasons and evidence in the body of the essay

–conclude with a summary of your main points and a restatement of the thesis

–cite and document any quotes.

There are a few conventions in writing about literature of which you should be aware.

In the introduction to your essay, mention the title of the work and the author’s full name:
In “The Tell-tale Heart,” Edgar Allan Poe presents a narrator who is rational but insane.
Work citation is required.

Be sure to include a Works Cited list. Use correct MLA format and citation techniques in your essay and your Works Cited list.

Chapter 14
For many large, international companies that do business in less developed countries, corruption is a part of everyday life. Without bribing public officials, their companies could never build a factory, hire employees, get permission to build infrastructure, or receive shipments from international vendors. Shipping merchandise out of these countries can be equally difficult, with customs agents demanding unofficial payments to allow the shipment to be made.

1. If you worked for one of these companies, how would you respond to being asked by your boss to pay a bribe?

2. Are such bribes a necessary part of doing business abroad?

3. Most importantly, explain this in the context of the FCPA laws.

Chapter 15
There have been some major data breaches in recent years – including Equifax, Capital One, Target, Home Depot, Facebook etc.
[You can find a complete list here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_data_breaches.]
All of these breaches increase the likelihood of you or your friends becoming a victim of identity theft.
Detail what actions you have taken or will take to protect yourself from this risk.
Further, describe what you would advise a friend or client to do if their identity has been stolen. (1page minimum )

Chapter 18
Mr. Oaks has worked as the CEO of Turley Bank for the last three years. This past year, the outside auditor discovered some fraudulent loan activity in which Mr. Oaks was circumventing internal controls to lend money to friends and family. After a thorough investigation, the board of trustees concluded that Mr. Oaks had committed more than $10 million in loan fraud. Mr. Oaks denied any wrongdoing. Now, the board is contemplating pursuing a civil case against Mr. Oaks, seeking repayment of the $10 million.

1. What are some reasons why Turley Bank would not pursue a civil case against Mr. Oaks?

2. If Turley Bank decides to pursue a civil case against Mr. Oaks, what are some reasons why the bank would settle out of court before the actual trial?

3. If Turley Bank decides to pursue a civil case against Mr. Oaks, what are some reasons why Mr. Oaks would settle out of court before the actual trial?

In this paper, you must draw from the case study of Pocahontas to discuss how the historical facts of her life and the popular culture representations about her differ.  What does this tell you about the story of Pocahontas?  What is its power?  How might this story be an example of the settler logic of elimination.  Draw from at least two of the readings and the film.

The response paper should make a strong claim, supported by evidence, and make a conclusion in 2-3 pages.

An excerpt from the Fourth Amendment reads: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Suspecting a Mr. Flammer of running an illegal gambling and loan sharking operation, the FBI obtained a federal search warrant. The FBI entered the residence of Mr. Flammer and searched through various records. Suspecting most of the records were contained on a personal computer, the FBI began attempting to access the computers various files.

Unable to access the needed files because of password barriers, the FBI installed a system known as a key logger system (KLS). This system was able to determine the keystrokes made on a computer and thus allowed the FBI to discover the password needed to enter the incriminating files. The discovery led to the gathering of evidence linking Mr. Flammer to the suspected illegal operation

Question: Were Mr. Flammers Fourth Amendment rights violated?

Course Project Description
Local Australian Fair committee

The purpose of this course project is for the student to integrate knowledge and experience.  This will be done by observing a small group in action and evaluating the groups performance by applying the theories and concepts studied in the course.  The small group you choose to observe should range from three to fifteen members. Written verification is required.

You must make sure that the group you choose to observe meets the definition of small group communication.  In other words, your group must be comprised of 3 or more people who interact with each other, are interdependent, and are working together in pursuit of a common goal.  This would generally exclude social groups and/or family groups.

Some possible groups to observe might include employee staff meetings, faculty meetings, PTA meetings, committee meetings, city council or church council meetings, club meetings, etc.  Virtually any group meeting in which at least three people interact, are interdependent, and are working toward a common purpose or to accomplish a task will be appropriate.  Please contact me if you are unsure that your group meets the proper criteria.

You should arrange to observe the group for at least 3-5 hours (cumulative, not necessarily all at once).  You will be responsible for writing a paper which analyzes your observations on at least five of the following small group characteristics:

        cohesiveness

        nonverbals

        conflict

        groupthink

        reciprocity

        structure

        leadership

        self-disclosure

        gatekeeping

        norms

        roles

        group decision making

any other topics discussed in our textbook but not listed here.

Your paper should have a clear introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph and must indicate to the reader that you have carefully applied small group communication theory and evaluated the groups performance.

Your introduction should be an overview of the purpose of the assignment.  Be sure to define what is meant by group.  The introduction should include a description of the group you observed and briefly list which of the group characteristics will be discussed in the paper.

The main body of the paper should focus on your observations and your evaluation of the groups functioning. For each characteristic that you choose to write about you should define the concept (using our text as a reference), explain what the concept means (as you understand it) and then describe how you observed this concept at work in the group you observed providing evidence to support your observations (for example, if you observed conflict in your group, describe the behaviors you saw that lead you to believe conflict existed within the group).

Once you have defined, described and have given evidence for your observations you should evaluate the groups functioning.  Based on the text descriptions and your observations, how well is the group functioning within the characteristic youve chosen to write about?  For example, if you observe conflict in the group, how well is the group handling it?  If you observe leadership, is it positive or negative? Does it hinder or help the group meet its goals?  If you write about norms, what kind did you observe? Are the norms constructive for the group or counterproductive? In other words, evaluate the groups functioning for each of the characteristics you choose to write about. Try to be as specific as possible.

Your conclusion should be a summary of your groups functioning.  Overall, based on what youve learned about groups from the course and based on your observations, how healthy is the group?  Is this a functional or dysfunctional group?  As an outside observer, what recommendations or advice would you give to the group?

The paper must be typed or computer printed with standard font (10 to 12 point), have margin sizes of 1 inch, Times New Roman font and should be 6-7 pages in length.  Your paper will be evaluated according to the degree of clarity of thought, detailed description, and insight, as well as correctness in spelling, grammar, and punctuation that is consistent with college-level writing.

Although outside sources are not required, the course material should be properly referenced when applying group communication terms, definitions and concepts.  Any outside sources should also be properly referenced. Either MLA or APA format should be followed.

Submit the group below that you feel you will be observing.

Steve (Slick) Willy, 45, just got out of jail. As a reformed citizen on parole, Slick decides to go into business for himself. He starts a collections company to help companies collect debts. The terms of his parole stipulate that he pay restitution payments to the federal government of $400 a month, or 10 percent of his income, whichever is greater. As his parole officer, you notice that after a year out of jail, Slick makes some interesting purchases. First, he buys a new Jaguar, which he drives to parole meetings.

Second, he moves into an expensive neighborhood on the north side of town and takes a cruise to Jamaica with his 19-year-old girlfriend. Yet, he has never been late making his $400 monthly payments to the federal government. After obtaining a subpoena for his bank records, you notice that he has only $1,000 in his account. About this time, you receive a call from a man who is making payments to Slicks collection company. He states that Slick is threatening to break his legs and hurt his family if he doesnt pay Slicks company. The man says Slick demands the checks be made out to a woman, not a company.

This complaint convinces you to investigate Mr. Willy and his girlfriend. A search of UCC filings in the county shows that Slicks girlfriend owns three cars costing a total of $85,000, a $360,000 house, and a company called TakIt From You. You check her bank account and see that more than $45,000 is moving through the account each month. You decide to dig through Slick and his girlfriends trash a few times each month. In these searches, you find evidence that supports the following: three car payments totaling $2,000 per month; a $2,600 monthly mortgage payment; a credit card balance of $6,500, with $200 monthly payments; a balance of $13,500 owed to Home Shopping Network, with $600 monthly payments; $350 food payments during the past two weeks; and a $3,650 payment to Jamaican Cruise Lines. After searching the girlfriends trash, you talk to her neighbors, friends, and co-workers and determine that she and Slick spend between $1,500 and $2,500 a month on miscellaneous items and trips. One neighbor tells you that Slick just gave his girlfriend a diamond ring that cost $4,500. Slicks girlfriend works as a waitress at a small restaurant and makes only $16,500 a year. (Note: Assume that both Slick and his girlfriends net worth last year were zero.)

Question: Use this information to prepare a net worth analysis of Slicks girlfriend. (Ignore interest in your calculations.)

Field Study Assignment and Final Paper
FIELD NOTES DUE IN MODULE 5.  (25 points)

FINAL PAPER DUE AS THE FINAL EXAM.  (100 points)

For the first part of this assignment, you will conduct a brief field study of TWO “public” sporting events or sports media events. The events should not require any type of membership to attend. This can include anything from attending a football game to watching an Extreme Sports broadcast at a local sports bar to participating in a free community yoga class.

The only requirements are:

1)      The events/activities must involve both sports and media (although it will be up to you to describe how, when and why the two relate),

2)      There must be a social dimension to the event (so that you’ll be able to observe the participants).

You will then conduct a field study of your selected events/activities, which will involve either passive or participant observation (see below for details). You will attend the event in person** and record your personal observations of each event based on the following:

The event itself:  What is the event/activity? Where does it take place (venue)? How long does it last and how often does it occur? What is involved?

The participants: What is your general impression of the people who attend this event? Who participates in the construction of the event (spectators, athletes, corporate sponsors, organizations, advertisers, etc.)

Media:  Is media part of the event? In what way? Where does media (technology or content) appear, when and how often? Is media consumption necessary part of participating in the event as a spectator? As a player?

THESE NOTES ARE DUE IN ROUGH FORM IN MODULE 5  (these will not be graded for grammar or spelling or sentence structure they are notes). This should be no longer than 1-2 pages.

FOR THE FINAL PAPER, you will construct a 4-5 page paper based on your field study notes (double spaced, using APA style for any references you might need, such as our textbook).  In this paper, you will use the Strategic Sport Communication Model (page 85 of your text), to analyze your events and their relation to media/communication.

Discuss how your observations of the media/communication in the 2 events differ.  Be sure to identify examples of the components in the Strategic Sport Communication Model that exist or do not exist. You are not expected to give a detailed explanation of why these similarities and differences might exist, but are encouraged to venture a hypothesis.

Use of secondary data is permitted, especially if it consists of a text that is directly related to the event/activity that you observed (newspaper article, blog entry, advertisement, TV news segment, etc.).
