Discussion #5 (assignment

Before you post to this discussion you will need to read: CI chapter 23 Immigration: What is to be Done? pages 557 570

If you do not have a textbook here are some of the articles with online links:

Five Myths about Immigration  by David Cole

The Worker Next Door  by Barry R. Chiswick

Angels in America  by John Tierney

Our Brave New World of Immigration  by Victor David Hannon  (you will need to scroll down on the page for the article)

After reading the various essays/articles on immigration  decide which presents the best argument and the write a unified paragraph (at least 8 sentences) that explains why. In your response please give the title of the essay and author.  Your paragraph will need to have a strong topic sentence and have a pattern of organization.  Include supportive evidence (direct quotes) to back up your ideas.  All evidence from the literary work must be cited.

You may choose ONE social policy document from the provided list of City of Toronto social policies below and critically examine and discuss the context and directives of the formulated and/or implemented social policy.

You are to write a 5-6 page, double-spaced, report on your chosen social policy document.

Please include your name, student ID, and report title clearly indicated on the first page.

You must also include a bibliography page with a list of 6 or more references to lecture material, course readings, additional library readings, as well as newspaper articles, website information, and other types of non-academic literature.

Please select one of the following four social policy documents produced by the City of Toronto government. You may preview the policy documents on Blackboard before choosing.

Policy Documents: (choose one)

City of Toronto Torontos First Resilience Strategy (2019)
City of Toronto The Toronto Newcomer Strategy (2013)
City of Toronto Youth Engagement Strategy (2015)
City of Toronto Housing TO 2020-2030 Action Plan  (2019)

You are to read and take notes on the policy document and focus on what the policy is attempting to direct, envision, and implement. Questions to address are:

What is the purpose and rationale of the policy document and how is this defined?
What problem(s) is it trying to solve and why?
What research/evidence does the document present to demonstrate the problem?
What analyses of this research are presented?
What are the social planning directives? (How is the document proposing to address and implement solutions to the problem in urban communities?)
Does the document mention the role of community-based organizations and/or residents? If so, how and why?

You must refer to the document as a reference in your assignment and also refer to lecture material, course readings, as well as additional readings that you may find in a library search that focus on social planning and community development, and that will also help you to further understand the particular topic of your document. For example, if you choose the City of Toronto Newcomer Strategy you might want to find articles and books on newcomers and immigration in cities more broadly and/or in Toronto to help you more strongly understand and interpret the policy document. Interviews with City of Toronto staff or other human participants are not allowed and information gleaned from personal conversations is not allowed in the paper.

Lab 3: Demographics
Fill this sheet out and submit via the link given in Blackboard.
Begin by going to the following website:  https://www.learner.org/courses/envsci/interactives/demographics/
Then click the link labeled Open Simulator.
This will bring up a simulator, which is pre-loaded with demographic data from various countries.

Part 1.  Population Growth and Age Structure Diagrams
Instructions
Using the tool provided on the website, examine the 2015 population and the simulated 2050 population for the following three countries:  USA, Brazil, and Nigeria.  Dont change any of the default settings for the country of interest.  On the data sheet, record the population size and the population growth rate, and also match the overall profile of the age structure diagram to one of the reference shapes given below.
Also record the projected 2050 results, as follows.  Without changing any of the default settings for the country of interest, click the Step button 7 times, which advances the simulation to the year 2050.  (Each click of the step button advanced the simulation 5 years).  Then, write down the projected population for 2050, as well as age structure shape that most closely matches the simulation. Record this information in the following data tables.
1.    Fill in the Data Tables.
Data Table (2015)    USA    Brazil    Nigeria    What Im looking for, for each row.
2015 Population    Population Size                Population in 2015 at the start of the simulation.  Looking for a number (in millions), e.g. 300 M.
Age Structure Shape                 Shape of Age structure diagram in 2015 at the start of the simulation.  Looking for a match to one of the reference shapes, e.g. Shape 3
Overall Growth Rate                Growth rate in 2015 at the start of the simulation.  Looking for a number expressed as a percentage, e.g. 1.3%

Data Table (2050)    USA    Brazil    Nigeria    What Im looking for, for each row.
2050 Population    Population Size                Projected population in 2050 from the end of the simulation.  Looking for a number (in millions), e.g. 300 M.
Age Structure Shape                 Shape of Age structure diagram in 2050 from the end of the simulation.  Looking for a match to one of the reference shapes, e.g. Shape 3
Overall Growth Rate                Projected growth rate for 2050, at the end of the simulation.  Looking for a number expressed as a percentage, e.g. 1.3%

Table of Reference Shapes
Shape 1    Shape 2      Shape 3
Shape 4    Shape 5    Table of Age Structure Shapes to Match

Questions for Part 1
2.  What clues from the shape of the age structure diagram tell you whether a population has positive or negative growth rates?

3. In our textbook, Figure 16.12 (p. 324) designates individuals in the ages of 0-14 as pre-reproductive individuals, and individuals between the ages of 15 and 44 as reproductive individuals.  Explain how we can get some idea of whether a population is growing or shrinking by comparing the population levels of pre-reproductive individuals to reproductive individuals.

Part 2.  Population Momentum
Instructions:
Simulate what would happen if Nigeria were to suddenly have the birth rates of the United States.  The step-by-step directions are as follows:
Call up the information for Nigeria (which is growing at a high rate).
Enter the editing menu for the vital rates of birth by clicking on the pencil that is shown in the vital rates chart.  When you get into the menu for editing the birth rates, look at the Use rates from ______ feature.  Use the pull down menu to select the values for the United States (which has a lower birth rate).
Click the Step button 7 times, which advances the simulation to the year 2050.
o    As you go, watch the population size, the growth rate and the age structure diagrams,
Questions:
4.  What happens to the population size immediately after the birth rate is abruptly dropped in this simulation?

5.  After the birth rate went down abruptly, in this simulation, at what point in the future did the simulation show that the population size was leveling off or starting to decrease?

6.  Why doesnt the population size drop immediately when the birth rate is thus diminished?

Previously, you began your work on selecting an issue to advocate for that you are passionate about.
Part 1: Advocacy Issue Selection

Risk management negligence within the financial services industry contributed to one of the most significant economic crisis in the recent history of the U.S. During this time, Lehman Brothers, a global financial services company, filed for bankruptcy protection. This created the largest bankruptcy ever within the financial services industry. In order to complete this assignment, you will need to search the Internet and Strayer databases for information related to Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, the financial risk factors that contributed to the failure, and managements responsibility for the failure.

Write a five to six (5-6) page paper in which you:

  1. Based on the information you research related to Lehman Brothers, assess the factors that contributed to the financial failure of the firm, indicating how management failed to manage the risk related to each factor. Make a recommendation for how firms should manage these types of risks in the future. Provide support for your recommendation.
  2. High-risk investments such as mortgage-backed securities, had a significant impact on the valuation of investments held with Lehman Brothers, yet many financial institutions continue to use these investments today. Assess the sufficiency of risk management techniques used by financial institutions today, indicating whether or not you believe the risk is appropriately managed to avoid a subsequent financial crisis. Provide support for your position.
  3. Evaluate managements role within a financial investment firm for establishing proper risk management procedures for high-risk investments and the appropriate level of accountability for portfolio performance. Determine the consequences that should be enacted when Financial Firm Management fails to perform their fiduciary obligation to investors, indicating how these consequences should be implemented. Provide support for your response.
