Select a species of interest (other than humans; perhaps a species you dont know much about, or a species that you are interested in) and write about it from an evolutionary perspective. For example: What is the classification hierarchy of your organism (Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species)? What is its scientific name (Genus + Species), and what does its scientific name allude to? Where in the Tree of Life does it fit? Which species or group of species is it most closely related to (hint: that would be the next branch on the tree with which it shares a common node)? Did its relationship to any of its evolutionary relatives surprise you, and if so, in what way? Where does your organism live? How is it adapted to its environment? Does your organism form a symbiotic relationship with another organism? Do humans use this organism or components/extracts of this organism for the benefit of our species? Is your organism being affected by global climate change? Etc.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
You will be responsible for seeking out at least three primary sources for your term paper, though you can have as many as you would like for your own use (all sources must be from a scholarly [peer-reviewed] journal; you cannot use textbooks, magazines, websites [e.g., Wikipedia], current event articles, press releases, blogs, etc.). The journals website will tell you whether their publications are peer reviewed. Use consistent formatting (e.g., MLA, ALA, etc.) for each source. State the name of your topic at the top of your bibliography. Summarize key information (paraphrase in your own words); plagiarism will result in a failing grade for this assignment. You can use bullet points or full sentences (whatever is most amenable to your writing process). You must include at least 150 words per reference (= 450 words total). You will be assessed based on adherence to formal formatting protocols (see the Purdue writing center website: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html) and paraphrasing of suitable information for the term paper.

I.    Introduction: List your top 3 stressors and state how you decided on them.

II.    Analysis and Discussion

A. Stress 1.
B. Stress 2
C. Stress 3

Make a separate heading and write an analysis and discussion for Stressor 1, 2, 3, 4. Try to include or reference the Five Dimensions of Holistic Health from chapter one: Physical, Intellectual, Social, Emotional, and SPIRITUAL. Address how your stressors are currently affecting your life.

III.    Conclusion, Summary, and Reflection

What have you learned about yourself?

What relationships, if any, do my stressors have with each other?

What part of my stress is due to my own thinking, perception, or attitude about the situation? What part do my own personal habits play into my stress?  What do I need to change? (just generally, with no details). The details will be provided in your last paper: Action Planning

Reference website:

Explore what kinds of audiences and purposes each of these documents might work best for, and what benefits, limitations, and ethical concerns come with each of these approaches to data visualization and presentation.

In particular, think about what kinds of conclusions could be made from each of these documents individually, as well as what kinds of conclusions might be reached by using them together. How does using only one or two change the perspective the reader/consumer of the research has? At the same time, why might it sometimes make sense to use only one or two types?

I WOULD LIKE THE PAPER TO BE ABOUT THE MAIN CHARACTER OF “POWDER” (The Boy)
Attached is the story below (as well as the rubric)

Objective:  To identify a pattern of connected details in a character’s actions, thoughts, and/or feelings, and to interpret that pattern to infer meaning and significance. For example, Bub (“Cathedral”) demonstrates a pattern of excessive consumption of alcohol, weed, and food. Why? Hint: He states he does not believe in anything. How can the two concepts be connected?  Remember to use summary, paraphrase, and quoted passages from the text appropriately to support your thesis statement.

Audience:  Someone who has not read the story (but do NOT write a summary essay).

Topics:  Choose a character from one of the stories read so far (not one from a previous essay) who most interests, intrigues or puzzles you.
List of stories: “Rose for Emily,” “Cathedral,” “Gimpel the Fool,” “Good Man is Hard to Find,” “Powder,” “Tits-up in a Ditch,” “The Things They Carried”

Pre-writing Suggestions:  DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR NOTES.
To help yourself pick up on cues that you’ll later be able to use as “evidence” in an essay, you can ask yourself questions as you read and re-read.  For example, to prepare for writing an essay describing and analyzing a character, you might ask (for your brainstorming benefit; don’t email):

What is the character feeling in the story?

What do other characters think or feel about this character?

        What does the character want?

What does s/he think s/he needs to do, or have, to get it?

What is s/he willing to do to get it?

What do the character’s actions show us about him/her?

What surprises him/her?  Scares? Hurts? Brings joy?

        How does the character change?

Are the changes internal, growth that naturally comes with age and experience?

Are the changes responses to external forces, such as family pressures,
        community expectations or social upheaval?

Does the character experience both kinds of change, and if so, how are they
        related?

Based on your journal notes and your knowledge of the character you’ve chosen to analyze, develop your own list of questions, or use any of the above, that will help you focus on your particular topic as you re-read the story.  Then make a list of passages from the text that help answer your questions.    Include the page number and a brief note explaining what the passage reveals about the character.  This is information for you to use in writing your essay. Do not send this pre-writing suggestion to me; these are just working notes for your benefit.

When you finish, set your list and free-writing or journal entries aside for at least an hour. Come back and re-read them, asking yourself, “Does this give me enough material to fit the requirements of this assignment (at least 4 pages, double-spaced, 1-inch margins)?  Does it give me too little information? Too much?  If your list is very short, you probably have too little information and need to find more or select a different topic.  If your list is very long, you may have to think about ways of dividing your subject or tightening your focus.

When your list and free-write seem adequate to you, write a working thesis statement. For example, “In this paper, I’m going to analyze the characteristics of _______ to demonstrate _____.”

Remember that a working thesis statements is simply a starting point; working thesis statements often change once you gain a deeper understanding of the subject in the actual writing phase of your essay body section–or conclusion! In fact, often the conclusion becomes a great introductory paragraph!

Brainstorm at lease three topic sentences (the main idea for each body paragraph).  Remember paragraphing skills: state the main point of the paragraph, support it, explain how/why the support works, add a concluding sentence that reinforces/re-states the topic.

Draft:  From your journal, notes, free-writing, discussion, draft the essay.  Follow the formatting guidelines set forth in proper manuscript format for 1000 words (at least four-five pages). Work on smoothly integrating material from the text to support your thesis (use introductory signal phrases such as, “According to …” or “The author shows…”), but don’t use so much textual material and descriptive detail that makes this becomes a summary essay. Do not write a summary essay.

Remember that I’m interested in your interpretation of the details and the patterns they create.  Also, feel free to bring up any problems or questions you encounter while drafting; chances are other people have the same questions, and we can explore possible solutions as a collaborative effort.

Sources: Add a last page of works cited (not in bold! 😉 to the end of the essay consisting of three different source materials:
1. Your textbook plus
2. Two scholarly sources (see NSC website for scholarly databases).

Revision:  Remember that you’re writing for an interested audience that has not read the book.  Some questions you can ask yourself are:

Is my thesis clear?  Will a reader understand what I’m saying about the story?
Have I understood the assignment and remained focused to prove my objective to:
identify a pattern of connected details in a character’s actions, thoughts, and/or feelings, and to interpret that pattern for meaning and significance.
Are my ideas supported by appropriate evidence from the text?
Am I using summary, paraphrase and quotation appropriately, and have I cited them correctly?
Will readers be able to argue with my ideas because I’ve used evidence that seems to weaken my case?
Is my structure clear?  Are transitions smooth?
Are my sentences varied and well constructed?  Do they read well aloud?
Am I using words accurately?
Does the writing give the sense of a confident, individual voice?
Give yourself time away from your revision before you give it a final proofreading.    It’s easier to see errors if you haven’t been glued to the work for twelve hours.  Make sure your punctuation is appropriate, giving the reader helpful or necessary signals for pauses and stops; also check for correct grammar and spelling.  Finally, give your paper a title.

Double-check deadline schedules on assignment page to ensure full credit due for your good work.

Due Date: by midnight, Sunday, May 31

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Use Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other formats like APA. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
Be typed, double spaced between lines, using Times New Roman font, Calibri, Arial, or Courier (size 10, 11, or 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and sources must follow SWS format. You must have a Sources list at the end; each source listed must also be cited in the body of the paper with an in-text citation. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
The preferred file software is Microsoft Word (part of MS-Office).  Alternatively, a student can use Windows WordPad (not NotePad) or OpenOffice.  (Please do not submit files in .pdf format or Apples Pages or Google docs.)
Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the students name, the professors name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the Sources page are not included in the required assignment page length.
The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length.  The 500 minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800 maximum is a loose guideline.  The body of the paper is to be double-spaced.  Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in lengthadd a page for your title page and another for your sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5/1/2. But, the length requirement is evaluated by word count.
The paper must be submitted (uploaded and attached) in the course shell provided online.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
Discuss the rise of the United States to a world superpower from 1940 to present day and how the formal international policies of government influenced the role of America as a policeman of the world.

To complete this assignment, similar to the Personal Dance Heritage Project, you will identify and research a social dance then write an essay that summarizes your research.

Directions:
1.) Choose a social dance that interests you. **This should not be the same as your personal dance heritage project. If it is I will ask you to re-do the essay.** Comment below with the dance that you choose.

2.) Research your chosen social dance by identifying both primary and secondary sources. Please use at least four (4) sources. If you need help finding sources let me know.

3.) Write a 750-1000 word essay on your social dance. Your essay should include an introduction, body, and conclusion, in-text citations and a works cited page. Please note that this assignment uses the Google Classroom “Originality Report” which checks for plagiarized writing.

Your essay should include the following content:
*Provide a history of the dance, including when, where, and how it developed.
Additional questions you might attend to are:
    * Who dances? (trained dancers, anyone, only men, only women, only childrenetc.)
    * When do they dance? (for special occasions, certain types of ceremonies, dailyetc)
    * Where does the dance happen? (on stage, in a sacred place, in the streetetc)
    * What is the function and significance of the dance? Why is the dance performed?
    * What inspires the movements?
    * Describe the dance. What type of movements do you see?
    * What is the typical dress of those dancing?
    * What is the music and what is the relationship between the dancing and the music as well as the dancers and musicians?
    * What aspects of the culture do you feel this dance reflects?

Throughout history and in different cultures feminist perspectives were long established to support equality among the sexes. Feminist theory and criticism has steadily expanded, such as through intersectionality that considers the inequities involved with all categories of social identity; through a focus on the rights of non-human animals; and through attendance to the environment. Identify and critically discuss the healthcare establishment, or climate change, or the treatment of non-human animals (choose one topic) from an expanded feminist perspective. Regarding your chosen topic, describe a specific issue you have experienced or been particularly concerned with. How effective do you think feminist movements have been and are at generating progressive changes to the inequities involved?
