Assignment:
The goal of the short response pieces is to give you the chance to engage more deeply with an idea from the reading, either in a positive way by applying that idea to a practical context or in a negative way by challenging that idea.  Thus, these will be graded purely on your engagement with the material.
In general, a short response piece should:
Take an idea from one of the readings assigned that day and explain how it expands or challenges a traditional approach to a policy problem. How would this idea change your practice as a policy leader?  How would implementing this idea change your analysis of a public problem?
Challenge an idea from the reading with an alternative principle or a counterexample. What is the author missing, and why would that idea change the application of the idea to practical policy problems?

Passing Strange Critique
This critique is a bit different.  I’m not interested in a formal critique.  I want the critique to be over your response to the show.  How did it make you feel?  What did it make you think?  Did you learn anything?  Were you offended?  Did it challenge you?  It’s a completely different type of musical and music.  How did you react to that.  That sort of thing.

Good morning Everyone and Professor,
At present, I follow the accommodating emotion while managing the emotions. It helps me to recognize the emotions of others as well as myself and try to establish a balance among the different feelings. It helps me to motivate my team and help them feel to be cared and connected with the system. Further, it helps me to react according to the situations and prevent the suppression of emotions.
The advantages are:
1.  Recognizing the importance of emotions and its roles in productivity
2.  An approach of  thinking before act, led by accommodating emotions
3.  Helps in managing stress at work
4.  Brings an emotional balance between work and personal engagement
The disadvantages are:
1.  Sometimes, it makes emotions to drive the decision
2.  Can cause hindrance in taking tough decisions
The emotional style has changed over a period. It started with the suppressed emotion during the young age. Slowly and progressively, it moved towards accommodating with the accumulation of knowledge, experience and maturity. Growing responsibilities also played an important role as accommodating emotion works better and healthy at the workplace and I can manage my stress also.
Expression of the joyous side of the personality, celebrating an occasion involving others, making a lighter environment with humor are now frequently used by myself to show the emotions I feel. It contributes towards building trust with people and initiation of a positive relationship, starts that goes beyond the office place.

Please write up a MLA format essay. I already have an outline for this essay as well, so you can just already have the information to put into the essay. Use the outline to write a 4-paragraph, MLA-formatted essay of about 450-600 words. (Academic paragraphs need to be 7-12 well-developed sentences in length.). Start the essay with an introduction that introduces the newspaper articles. At the end of the introduction include a thesis sentence that introduces the points being compared/contrasted. I already have the info to do this as well. Thank you if you will do this for me!

Stay safe,
Kaitlyn

I have attached an Excel worksheet to assist you with Problems 1 and 3. If you wish, you can complete Problems 1 and 3  on the Excel worksheet and Problem 2 on the Word document or you can complete all of them on the Excel or Word document. Please be sure to show your calculations for your answers.

In order to complete the game audio analysis, please refer to the Game Music Framework for ListeningPreview the document. You may also find it useful to read this Online LecturePreview the document and the Scale SupplementalPreview the document helpful in illustrating some of the melodic concepts. Or, for more on video game music specifically, try reading through Chapter 2 of Tim Summers’s book preview the document Understanding Video Games for some ideas on how to approach game audio analysis, or refer to his handy AppendixPreview the document (in outline format) of how to listen and classify what you are hearing!

1. Choose a video of pure gameplay footage, without commentary or voiceover walkthroughs. This playlist (Links to an external site.) has a few examples to get you started, but you are welcome to choose your own. This channel (Links to an external site.) also has a ton of great footage.

Searching the name of the game you’re interested in, followed by the word “long play” on YouTube will get you the best result–these videos tend to be free of commentary.
If you choose a video, not on the playlist, please link it at the top of your post.
2. Choose approximately a 5-10 minute snippet of the video and provide the timestamps at the top of your post (e.g., Legend of Zelda long play, 2:50-7:45). Try to pick a section where there is an interesting use of music or sound or the game transitions between sound in interesting ways.

Note: You may use a cutscene for one (but not all) of your Game Audio Analysis posts–cutscenes are pre-rendered and the music is composed to fit specifically to the image, much like in a film. Therefore, cutscenes are not as good of a representation of the different ways that sounds can function in video games since there is no gameplay.

3. Next, perform an analysis using the FrameworkPreview the document as a guide. You do not have to answer every question, but strive to capture as many musical details as you can over multiple listenings, and record them here. There is no penalty for misidentifying something; I would rather see you try, and then I have something to work with you individually on, to help you improve.

Need help? Not sure quite how to get started? See below for an introduction to some of the important elements of musical analysis, or this introduction to musical analysis lecture from my history of rock and roll course offering: Online LecturePreview the document. There are many examples of pop and rock songs listed–you can hear all of them on this Spotify playlist (Links to an external site.).

4. As you’ll see, the framework will have questions that don’t apply to every song (e.g. for an instrumental, you can ignore the lyrics section), so you’ll only answer what is relevant, but you should try to answer everything that you can. The post length will vary based on whether you answer in short sentences (like filling in the Framework as a worksheet) or in full paragraph prose to organize your thoughts. Either is ok–I’m looking for strong content and analysis, not a particular arbitrary length.

5. The goal is to capture as much musical detail as possible, so I can see how you are listening and analyzing what you hear and help you grow into the level you’ll need to do the analysis portion on the final paper. Grading in these posts is participation-based so that I can help you become more comfortable with the terminology and the technique of this style of listening.

Intro to Analysis

This course asks you to do a great deal of critical listening and analysis. To the non-musician (and even to the seasoned performer!), this can be quite daunting. Critical listening involves knowledge of how music is put together, and to a lesser extent, elements of its cultural significance and historical development. When we listen critically, we usually rely on tools of music analysis. This is an approach to music listening that might be new to you. To help, let’s break critical listening down into six musical elements or parameters that you can refer to throughout the semester:

Soundprint– the unique qualities that distinguish one performer, style, or genre from another. The sound print entails the more or less immediate effect the music has on your ear, the elements that enable you to tell the difference in just half a second between 8-bit and 16-bit sound, or between music composed for the Super Nintendo vs. the Sega Genesis. In describing a particular “soundprint,” you can talk about five specific musical aspects:
Timbre (tone color): the characteristic sound of an instrument or voice, as determined by its frequency and overtone components (the high, virtually inaudible secondary tones that accompany any musical pitch); we talk about a timbre as bright or dark, pure or dirty, smooth or rough. Any evocative adjective will do!
Instrumentation: for instance, in popular music we often differentiate between acoustic and electric (electrified) sounds, or note the presence of unusual instruments in a certain musical context or genre, such as flute or marimba in a rock song.
Texture: the interaction of different layers of sound. We can have simple blocks or more complex, woven textures
Dynamic levels (volume): soft, loud, or somewhere in between?
Inflection: the note-to-note shaping of a musical line; for instance, many popular musicians slide expressively into and out of notes rather than hitting them neatly head-on.
Harmony — the simultaneous occurrence of two or more musical pitches, and how hose note sets are arranged and deployed
Melody — the main (sung) line, the horizontal aspect of the music
Rhythm — how music moves through time
Form — the organization of music, its structure, its basic building blocks, & the ways in which they are combined
Text — the words or lyrics of a track, if applicable

In addition to the required reading, I will also provide many articles in the field of ludomusicology. Over the course of the semester, you will be expected to engage with at least two of these supplemental articles.

Then you will craft an article summary post using the “3-2-1” format, in which you:

Summarize three main aspects or arguments for the piece (which can also involve evaluating the arguments and stating your opinion of their effectiveness);
Identify two things you didn’t quite understand or found confusing or unclear (these can also be in the form of a question you might ask the author–a clarification, request for more information, follow-up, etc.);
Devise one potential discussion question that you would assign if you were the teacher, that could help your classmates make the way through the “maze” themselves. Or, if you were to ask a question of the author, what would it be?
Its like drawing a map of the dungeon for future travelers! You will need to complete two substantive article summary posts by the end of the semester to earn all of the XP! You will not be required to formally respond to your classmates Article summary Posts, but you may enjoy reading and comment on the summariesand extra participation is rewarded in this course.

I would recommend reading the article(s) once, marking important points that jump out at you, and then going back through a second time as you craft your post and the discussion questions.

Homework Instructions
Please address the following aspects for each of the scenarios on the next
three slides.
1. What forecasting method would you recommend?
2. Why would that method be appropriate?
3. What data, resources, etc. would you need to implement your
recommended method?
4. What challenges do you foresee when trying to implement your
recommended method? (Hint: data, resources, cost, etc.)
Short, one-to-two sentence answers per question should be enough.
Scenario 1
A seasoned film producer is contemplating a new venture producing what she
believes will be the next blockbuster TV series. Although she seems to have a
hard time deciding on how big a budget to line up for the project, she knows
from her extensive experience that any budget she ends up deciding on will
have to depend on the TV series anticipated revenues. Having worked with you
on past ventures, she is convinced that you are the right person to help her
estimate the TV series revenue generation potential. How would you go about
assisting with this high-stake task?
(In other words, tell me how you would produce an estimate of the TV series future revenues.)
Scenario 2
You are the Chief Financial Officer at a major multinational pharmaceutical
company. The VP of R&D has approached you regarding a one-of-a-kind drug
that she believes her team can develop over the next two-to-three years. She
emphatically argued that the drug has the potential to cure a disease that has
been shown to affect a well-defined demographic in the Indian subcontinent.
How would you go about deciding whether to pursue this project or not?
(Be thorough in your answer. You can use hypotheticals as you see fit. Hint: A good forecast would
help, but how would you go about producing one? )
Scenario 3
You are a seasoned forecasting expert working for a major consumer
packaged goods (CPG) company in the food industry. One of the promising
college graduates that you just hired into your team is assigned the task of
forecasting demand for one of the companys flagship breakfast cereals. He is
nervous about the task and is asking for guidance. Knowing that the product in
question has been a category leader for close to a decade, what guidance
would you provide to your new hire? How should he approach his new task?
(Tell me how you would recommend the new hire produce his forecast.)

My Theory of Family Therapy

The purpose of this critical assignment is for students to compose an essay that explains their personal theory of family therapy based on the knowledge they have gained about various family therapy theories throughout this semester. As such, students are tasked with contemplating their personal convictions and preferences about how to best theorize the family therapy process. In other words, students should think about what theories and research they encountered during this semester that were most convincing to them. For example, what is the best explanation for how families change and grow? Is it from disrupting homeostasisor improving levels of differentiationor clarifying boundariesor changing attachment patterns? Or some combination of those? These are the kinds of questions that students should ask themselves as they are preparing to write this paper. Students may choose to discuss their personal theory based on one existing theory of family therapy or they may decide to integrate two or more existing theories together. An article about integrative models in couples and family therapy by Smith & Southern (2005) is available in the critical assignment link for your reference.

This essay should include at least 6 peer-reviewed journal articles. Students may also cite the course textbook, but that citation should be in addition to the 6 journals. Below is a detailed outline of what should be included in the body of the essay. For this paper, you are required to use the following headings throughout the paper. A suggested page-length for each section of the body of the paper is offered below:

(1/2 page) Introduction introduce the paper and what you intend to discuss.
(1 page) Therapist-Family Relationship discuss what you believe is the best type of relationship that the counselor and family should maintain. Should it be one of close collaboration? Or should it be one where the therapist is more distant? Or somewhere in between? Please explain and give a research-based rationale for your assertions.
(1 page) How Do Families Change? discuss your theory of how families change and grow in the therapy process. What does your theory suggest are some of the key components necessary for families to change? What is your theory-based rationale for why that would help families change and improve?
(1 page) Counseling Techniques discuss 2-3 foundational techniques that you think are vital for the family therapy process. What is/are the theory(ies) behind why these techniques work in therapy? Is there research to support the effectiveness of the techniques?
(1 page) Multicultural Competence discuss your personal theory about the necessity of multicultural awareness and competence within the counseling process (i.e., why is it important to be aware of multicultural issues when counseling diverse populations?). Please provide research evidence for the benefits of being a multiculturally-aware therapist when it comes to therapeutic outcomes such as improvement satisfaction, and low drop-out rates.
(1 page) Faith and Personal Influence discuss to what degree your personal theory of family therapy is influenced by your faith beliefs and personal/cultural background. How does your faith and/or life experience impact your beliefs about family therapy effectiveness?
(1/2 page) Conclusion include any concluding remarks necessary.
