Prompt: Character development:
If you had to choose one of the women (Mrs. Hale or Mrs. Peters), which one would be the protagonist? Why? Discuss what makes her more likely as the protagonist than the other woman (include discussion of the changes the character undergoes as the play progresses, the decision the character makes that result in those changes, and the place (mental/emotional) the character is in by the end of the play (including how it differs from when the play began). How are you manipulated to empathize with her? Do you agree with her decision at the end of the play? Why or why not (does your gender play a part in this decision)? Does her decision affect your appreciation of the character’s journey?

Prompt: Symbols and Theme discussion:
Because this play is only one act, everything that takes place within the play has heightened importance (objects, conversations, spoken and non-spoken decisions). Thus, this play contains several objects that play double duty: physical, tangible object plus abstract symbolic purpose. Choose two symbols. How does each object as symbol further the characters’ development, the plot’s development, the theme’s development? How relevant is that theme to today (the play was written in 1916)? Would the symbols still work if the play were ‘modernized’?

As part of the literature review, describe ways researchers in the discipline have approached the problem and the strengths and weaknesses inherent in their approaches. Paper number two on this.
Through a sociological lens compare and contrast the Social Security Debate of these two organizations:
    Association of Retired Persons (AARP)
    Citizens for a Sound Economy
4 to 5 pages, not including title and work cited, double space, APA format
1) Explain which organizations you have chosen and identify their homepage URLs.
2) Using Domhoff’s terminology noted above, explain how you would characterize the political viewpoint of each of these organizations and why, including an analysis of the vocabulary and ideas at their websites. Be on the lookout for code words that provide hints of their ideological assumptions and agenda. Provide support for your assertions by citing Domhoff.
3) Likewise using Domhoff’s terminology, explain what type of organization each is, and what process or processes it is mainly involved in. Explain how each relates to the model of class, power, and politics that Domhoff lays out in his book.
4) Contrast the different views about social security expressed at the two organizations’ websites. How do they agree or differ on whether social security faces a crisis, whether social security is the best way to provide for retirement security, and what needs to be done?
5) Provide a critical evaluation of these sites. Are the facts properly stated and documented? Are the interpretations convincingly supported by facts and other evidence? Are the policy proposals convincing to you? Bring in material from Domhoff’s book or website Who Rules America where relevant and cut and paste passages from the websites where relevant, remembering to properly cite the relevant URLs.

How can philosophy relate to your life?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. You can even say, “it doesn’t” if you like. However, there are a few certain things you need to do while giving your answer. These include:

– Provide a clear explanation and exposition of what you take the question to mean. In other words, what does it mean for anything, at all, to relate to one’s life? Please explain to me the question as if I had not idea what you were writing the essay about.

– Clearly state your “Thesis” in a sentence or two. You should be able to summarize your answer in an understandable way. The rest of your paper will elaborate and support your thesis.

Part of elaborating on your thesis will be giving a brief clarification of what “philosophy” means to you. (Maybe a good second paragraph in your paper . . . )

– Show evidence that you have familiarized yourself with the course material, and/or some otherwise philosophically relevant material. By the time this essay is due, we will have only covered Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, as well as Logic, and the introductory readings from Russell and Lao Tzu. You are welcome to draw examples of Philosophy’s relevance to your life from this material; however, you are also welcome to provide your own examples. For instance, perhaps Ghandi or some other thinker, or some school of thought, like Existentialism has already left a large impression upon you. If so, use this essay to elaborate. If you are confused or have questions about this aspect of the assignment, or want to check something (Like can I use Bob Marley? – yes, you can) you are always welcome to shoot me an email.

In doing the above, you will be required to cite sources backing up your interpretation of the views you present. Want to talk about Yoda? Then you’d better do so accurately and cite a source. Sartre? Better reference something he wrote.

Close read Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link
Prompt 1: Symbolism:

Links short story, like previously, contains monsters of various types. The phrase pretty monsters is referenced more than once. Who are the pretty monsters and why are they labeled as such? What other pretty monsters might be referenced with that phrase? Are they the same or different as the pretty monsters described on p. 360? Explain your answer.

Prompt 2: Organizational strategies:

This short story is broken into sections, with headers L, C, and L C. In addition, L, Lee, is reading a book throughout the short story. What is the purpose of the alternating headers in this short story (what is Links intent)? How does Lees book fit into this organization? How do you think the last section, L C, connects the headers to Lees book? And how does that tie into your act of reading as an audience member (note the quote on p. 388And if you go back to the beginning and read it again, you may discover it isnt the same story you thought youd read. Stories shift their shape); how did THIS story shift once you got to the end (think about theme, meaning, POV, etc.).
