Background: As you learned through our exploration of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein and The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, paying attention to sensory details sight, sound, and touch can help viewers/readers better understand an artists work. In addition to sight, sound, and touch, smell and taste can also give viewers different perspectives of any artwork. When readers read a particularly descriptive text and pay attention to sensory details within it, they, too, are able to better understand and negotiate meaning with that text.

Prompt: Write a well-developed essay in which you compare and contrast how sensory details can help readers of both The Scream and Frankenstein gain a better understanding of the “texts.”

Audience: You instructor and classmates, who (for the purpose of this assignment) have neither seen the Munch painting nor read the Shelley text.

So What? As you think about the prompt, ask yourself the following question: So what? What is the significance of knowing that paying attention to sensory details can help readers/viewers better understand texts and artworks? You must answer this in your essay.

Summary/Description: Since your reader has neither seen the painting nor read the text, you must first describe the painting and summarize the text excerpt before you start to the sensory details from both as evidence (examples) for your argument. Remember: you will introduce each source when you first use it in your body paragraphs.

The analysis: As you compare and contrast to your reader about how sensory details affect a readers interpretation of both artworks and texts, you must explain how and/or why, specifically, certain sensory details do so in relation to the two works.

NOTE: Online (or print-based) descriptions and/or analyses of The Scream and Frankenstein should not be consulted since you will be evaluated on what you experience in the painting and text and why you think those details are relevant. Any evidence of using others’ opinions about this specific painting may significantly reduce your grade.

Hiring Process

Imagine that you have taken on a position as the Executive Administrative Specialist for Human Resources. One of your first tasks is to coordinate the selection process for teacher candidates at one of the Districts new schools opening in 2020-2021. The Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, your manager, has shared that the process is divided into three key phases: resume/application review, phone interview screen, and in-person panel interviews. He also shared with you that this process is being conducted jointly between DPSCD and a local university and the selection committee consists of senior leaders from both organizations, which means all materials, updates and scheduling must be coordinated across both teams.
The application window closes in two weeks, and the selection process will need to occur over the course of the four weeks following the close of applications.

Directions

1. Generate a draft plan with all the tasks and items that will need to be coordinated in order to conduct the three phases of selection. For each task, include a specific deadline and notes with any information you will need in order for the team to complete the task.

2. Draft an email to the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, imagining that you are attaching your draft plan to it. In your email, explain any assumptions you made when creating your plan, ask any outstanding questions you have that would help you improve your plan, and request any support you will need from the Assistant Superintendent or other members of the Human Resources team to coordinate the work.

Once again I am asking you to use an academic lens to investigate the supernatural. While previously you explored ghosts in film and literature for this assignment you will be analyzing vampires, and you will be doing so in the form of a visual essay.

For this assignment you will using the philosophical and historical approaches. Specially you will be looking at the philosophical concepts of the “new woman” and “ideal masculinity”

Visual Essay Assignment Details:
Pick one of the female characters and one of the male characters from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and then create a visual essay that compares those character to modern representations of women and men in vampire film, literature and/or art. You should analyze how the characters you choose either represent or are counter to the concept of the “new woman” and “ideal masculinity.” Think about how this idea has evolved in the modern era and how modern characters may or may not reflect this. You must choose one example of a female and male character from Dracula and one example of a female and male character from a modern day version of vampire story. Your modern day examples can from film, television, art or literature.  You must do some research of this assignment, as two scholarly sources are required.

Visual essay should include:
A section that explains what is meant by the “New Woman” and “Ideal Masculinity” in both the Victorian era and modern day
Think about how or if these ideals have changed over time
At least one slide/image/section for each of the characters you choose (you can use more than one slide/image/section if needed)
You must include a short written explanation of how your chosen characters do or do not reflect the concept of the “new woman” or “ideal masculinity”
This can be done with bullet points or short paragraphs.
A reference page with at least two scholarly sources
