Prompt
Using well-selected evidence from Nathaniel Rich’s article : “Losing the earth”, the documentary Merchants of Doubt*, and providing careful and clear reasoning, answer the following question:

If Nathaniel Rich had published his article this August, just before the Presidential elections, rather than in August 2018, just before the Midterm elections, would the article succeed in persuading voters to go to the polls to cast their votes based on a desire to protect the earth’s climate? What might keep voters from this choice? Does Rich’s article overcome the continued claim that there is “no scientific consensus on the cause of climate change”? or can readers still maintain this claim after reading “Losing Earth”?

Ask yourself the following questions:

What is the most persuasive evidence that Rich provides in his article?
What is the least persuasive evidence that he provides?
Does Rich do enough to reveal the “selling of doubt” that fossil fuel companies have funded?

In your conclusion, tell us: What do you think reluctant voters would need to hear to persuade them that the climate is worth protecting?

Include at least one image (it can be a graph, a photo that illustrates an issue you’re discussing. Avoid generic images representing climate change. Choose an image that is directly relevant to a specific idea you’re discussing, for example, the Keeling Curve.)

Many police agencies now look at their culture in a new light, developing policies and practices that advance constitutional goals, protect citizens rights, and provide equal protection under the law.

Answer all five questions below. Responses should be at least 250 words each, with examples and citations as needed.

1. Explain how constitutional policing forms the foundation of community policing.

2. Discuss how everyone within an agency, from patrol officers up through chiefs may contribute to police legitimacy, creating a community more willing to cooperate with the police and to accept the outcome of their interactions with the police.

3. Explain how social media is being used to allow a two-way conversation between the police and the community. Give appropriate examples.

4. Some city officials suggest the police should reach out to community leaders, meet with civic organizations in an effort to diversify their administration to enhance and fortify relationships.

5′. Discuss the benefits and/or drawbacks this has for community policing.
Citizen review boards allow citizens to play a key role in investigating and overseeing police activities. However, some argue that civilians are not qualified to judge whether a police officer followed its agencys rules or the law. Take a pro or con stance on citizen review boards and explain the benefit or drawback of their use. Provide examples to support your position.

Instructions
For this week’s assignment respond to one of the following options, and include Option 1, 2, or 3 as part of your heading.

Option 1: The first option is to name and describe in detail a key specific and recent healthcare technology. What are at least two key moral problems this technology creates? What are the proper moral guidelines for dealing with it in your view? Compare your approach to what an utilitarian and ethical egoist would say (each independently).

Option 2: In the second option, name and describe in detail a key specific and recent social technology. What are at least two key moral problems this technology creates? What are the proper moral guidelines for dealing with it in your view? Compare your moral approach to what an utilitarian and social contract ethicist would say (each independently).

Option 3: John Doe, Patient One, is in late stage of kidney disease. If he does not receive a new kidney, then he is predicted to die within a week. Doe is 45, single, and has no children. Doctors theorize that Doe damaged his kidney by not following a low-salt diet. Doe inherited one million dollars and is known for giving money to charity. Without a transplant, he will probably be forced to spend all his money searching for a kidney outside of the usual legal channels.
Patient Two is Jane Doe (no relation to John). Patient Two is a mother of two children (ages 21 and 24). She is divorced and 55 years old. She developed kidney problems due to eating a high-fat and high-sugar diet. If she does not receive a kidney within one month, doctors believe she will die.
Patient Three is an orphan. This orphan lives in a state facility. She was born with a genetic condition that constantly damages her kidney. The only known approach to her condition is to provide her with a kidney transplant every so often. She is 11 and has already undergone two kidney transplants. She will perish in two months if she does not receive another transplant.

All three patients are at the same hospital. The hospital only has one kidney to give out. The orphan’s birth parents were known to be of a religion that is opposed to organ donation. The other patients come from religions that do not oppose organ donation. Who should get the kidney?  Why should that candidate receive it over the others? Devise a course of social action and a solution for this case by using the ethics of egoism and then utilitarianism to a key moral conflict involving health care in this case. Appraise the interests of diverse populations (in terms  of ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.) and how they relate to the case.

For all the options:

Cite the textbook and incorporate outside sources, including citations.

You should not be using any text you used in a discussion board or assignment for this class or any previous class.

You will submit all of the following:

A written report that presents one of the options above (Be sure to give equal time to each element.)
An oral presentation that summarizes the report and examines the ethical ideas beyond the particulars of each case.
The link or a scan of the article mentioning the health technology, social technology, or case you are reporting on. If you made up the case, please indicate that in your report.
You should not be using any text you used in a discussion board or assignment for this class or any previous class.

In this Critical Mission Assignment you will need to write an essay of no less than 500 words regarding the leadership qualities of Juan Nepomuceno Seguin after watching a video simply entitled Seguin. (Yes, its dated but at least it stars Edward James Olmos) Juan Nepomuceno Seguin, an often unsung and unheralded leader in the Texas Revolution, raised an army to fight the Mexican forces of Santa Ana at the Alamo. Feel free to use your textbook as an additional resource.  You will need to upload your paper as an attachment.

Seguin (Links to an external site.)
Seguin

Your task is to watch the film and evaluate the decision of Seguin to join the revolution in order to fight for an independent Texas.  He is arguably one of the most tragic figures in Texas History as he remarked later A native of San Antonio de Bexar, I find myself now persecuted . . . a stranger in my own land . . . the land I sought to defend . . .  You may take any position as long as you support your argument.  Few students in Texas enter a history classroom without a preconceived view of the Alamo and the struggle for Independence.

The Seguin family was a prominent Tejano family at the time of the revolution and had long promoted regional interests with Mexico City. At the outbreak of fighting, Juan Seguin was mayor of San Antonio and a large landowner. Nevertheless, following the beginning of legal American immigration in 1822 to Texas under the direction of Stephen F. Austin and others, the native Tejano population increasingly became outnumbered by newcomers. For example, on the eve of fighting the Tejano population numbered about 5000 compared to 30,000 recent Anglo arrivals. Of the 187 Alamo defenders, 2/3 had been in Texas less than six months and even fewer than at least a decade. To complicate matters, most Tejanos found themselves caught between two cultural identities and their loyalty questioned. While the film portrays the wealthy Seguin as representative of most Tejanos, in reality most non-Anglos sided with Mexico or simply took no part.

Consider the position of Seguin and that of other men of privilege.  Why did they support Federalist policies over Centralist ones?  Did Seguin have valid reasons to fight for independence?  What forces shaped his political views? Mexico, like the United States, was also a republic with its own partisan legislature which could block needed reforms, or create political gridlock.  Often times these reforms threatened economic position and political influence. For example, the population of Coahuila vastly outnumbered Texas and diminished the influence of Anglos as part of Tejas y Coahuila.  When confronted with entrenched opposition whose cause you deem counter to political interest, what measures justify bold action?  The Law of 1830, a major factor in creating the political unrest that led to revolution, initially abolished the legal status of slavery which the Spanish and later Mexican governments had earlier allowed. Did an ever expanding cotton economy and slavery play a part in rebellion? What were Seguins views on slavery? Explore his relationship with Anglo men of prominence and privilege.

This essay has to be a personal narrative.

You should write about your own life and experiences. This paper should be created out of your explorations of the topics in the class. You are NOT being asked to write fiction or a novel this is about one of your own experiences with racial injustice. Your own writing style could be informal, use dialogue, use description, use comparison, or use examples.

Please write as a white person.

Choose option three.

The principle of utility involves maximizing happiness as a desirable outcome of decisions. Although it does not get directly said, there is an inverse intention to minimize the undesirable outcome of disaster. Utilitarian decisions are directed toward outcomesthat is, the consequences of decisions.

We need to look at results. We first look at the actual results of an action. We judge if it was the best possible result. We can judge the actual results in comparison to other results that reasonably could be said to have been possible.

If we do not yet have the actual results of an action, we do not know if it is moral or not. We can talk hypothetically about what might happen, and then what that would show about the morality of an action. However, if we do not know what the action had as its consequences, we cannot yet say if it is moral or not.

Initial Post Instructions
For the initial post of this week’s discussion respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1, Option 2, or Option 3:

Option 3: You are a nursing student at the XYZ College. It has a 50 percent acceptance rate (half the applicants do not get in). XYZ is a public college. XYZ has decided to implement an affirmative action policy. The college has few students over the age of 50. To encourage more students of that age, every student 50 or older will receive a bonus point. A student’s admission is dependent on having 11 points. One earns points for a GPA above a certain score, ACT/SAT score above a certain number, having a letter of recommendation, etc. XYZ also lacks LGBT students, Muslim, and African-American students and is considering offering a bonus point for any student fitting those categories. What is the key moral conflict for XYZ? What social values should XYZ promote here? What diverse populations are involved here, and what are their interests? Do you think XYZ’s social action is the correct solution to lack of diversity? Why or why not? Factor the ethics of egoism and utilitarianism into your answer.

Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least two peers OR one peer and the instructor. If possible, respond to one peer who chose an option different than the one you chose. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification. Make sure that you add additional information and not repeat the same information already posted on the discussion board as you further the dialogue.
