1. Design Build Contract:
a. Define the structure and intent of a firm fixed price (FFP) design-build contract.
b. What are advantages and disadvantages of such a contract?
c. As noted in the case study, the more common type of contract used in public
sector projects like the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a design-bid-build contract. What
advantages does a design-build contract have over the design-bid-build
agreement?

1. Explain Big Data and the three Vs of Big Data, in your own words. Limit your answer to 250 words or less.

2. How is Hadoop related to Big Data? Explain the features of Hadoop. Limit this answer to 250 words or less.

3. Consider an organization with which you are familiar that has some Big Data issues or problems. Describe the organization and its Big Data problems, then explain how Hadoop could help to address these problems. Limit your answer to 400 words or less.

The settlement of the American West, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Native Americans, remains one of the most seismic migrations in the history of the planet.  In the consciousness of a young United States, this settlement defined how new Americans saw themselves, it defined how they understood their young nation’s destiny, and it is still looked back on by many as a triumphant achievement.  It would be impossible to say “The settlement of the American West was a negative event,” just as it would be impossible to say “The settlement of the American West was a positive event.”  However, we can try to understand what the positive and negative consequences of this settlement were, and perhaps come to a judgment about the process in general.

In reading the primary sources for this week: Chief Joseph on Indian Affairs (1877, 1879) and William T. Hornaday on the Extinction of the American Bison (1889) we are undoubtedly confronted with some of the sadder consequences of this irreversible process.

How can we, as historians, learn from these sources so that we can understand and help guide similar processes in the world today?  What kind of processes of migration, conquest, and change in today’s world could better be understood by reading the words of Chief Joseph and William Hornaday?

Analysis of a Mathematics Lesson

The first part of this project will focus on what is involved in students becoming mathematically competent.  For this assignment you will identify the big mathematical ideas of a lesson and the practices involved in doing mathematics. Lesson: Match 2 objects that are exactly the same.

What is the mathematical content of this lesson?

What do you think students have an opportunity to understand (concept) and/or be able to do (skill) by participating in this lesson?
Explain whether the content is focused on procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, or problem solving. (Please not that problem solving refers to using mathematical knowledge in a new or unique way, not simply repeating procedures provided by the teacher and persevering when the problem seems difficult.)
In what way did the content exemplify how mathematics is used to model real life problems? Describe whether the real-life context was authentic or contrived.

How is the mathematics of this lesson represented?
What strategies might you see students use?
What models are most appropriate for representing the context or students thinking in this lesson?
Describe the mathematical language and symbols that were used in the lesson. In what way were the children encouraged to use proper mathematical language?
What mathematical practices are best supported by this lesson?

Describe the mathematical tools that were used to represent the mathematical concepts. (e.g., pencil, paper, concrete models, counters, computer). In what ways did these tools help students explore and deepen their understanding of the concepts? Which other tools do you think could be used effectively? Explain.
Describe whether the content as presented requires students to reason abstractly and/or quantitatively. Describe whether students were expected to look for and make use of the structure of the mathematics.
What other math practices are used in this lesson?

Guidelines:
1.  Respond to each prompt above based on the content and instructional strategies and procedures in the lesson you are analyzing. Give concrete examples.
2.  A complete response that demonstrates a thorough understanding of the mathematics of the lesson may involve actually doing the math in the lesson and doing some research using the resources listed in your syllabus.
3. You may choose to represent your analysis in one or multiple formats based on what best meets your needs. For example, some parts of your analysis might be best shown on a table, or chart, or graph, while other parts require standard prose.
4. You must include a reflection that is connected to the course content and resources.

This week you will begin reading the assigned monograph for this class, David Oshinsky’s Worse than Slavery: Parchman Farm and the Ordeal of Jim Crow Justice.

For the discussion this week, I want you to give your opinion about the book’s title.  Although the book is about a period of American history after the emancipation of millions of slaves, it describes the establishment of a penal system in the South which, in effect, engaged in the wholesale re-enslavement of thousands of mostly innocent southern blacks. Certainly, no one would argue that slavery was preferable to even the worst nightmares southern white supremacists could inflict on a now technically “free” black populace.  Yet the title comes from a quote from an inmate who endured the horrors of the prison.

From your reading of the first two chapters, what do you believe lies at the root of the establishment of this prison system in Mississippi?  What lies at the root of the brutality inflicted upon the emancipated black populace of the state?

Purpose

Studying the impact of communication techniques on enhancing interpersonal communication styles and improving the quality of our relationships.

Process

Select a technique that enhances interpersonal communication. (For example, you may want to focus on Image Management, Self-fulfilling Prophecies, Smiling, Perception Checking, using “I” Language, or a specific skill associated with Listening.)
Research what communication scholars have said about it.
Conduct experiments with it in various settings.
Write about what you have noticed and learned about its effect on your interpersonal communication style and its impact on your relationships.

In your term project paper, include each of the following sections.  Clearly identify each section with a subheading.

The Topic:  Identify and describe one technique on which you will focus. Be certain to clearly state the topic and describe it fully. Show that you understand the topic.

Rationale:  Explain why you have chosen this particular topic.  Go into some detail here. Why did it catch your attention?  What are you hoping to find out by experimenting with this technique?  What are you hoping to discover or accomplish?

Research.  What have communication experts had to say about this technique? In this section, indicate three (3) or more research sources you consulted and what they have to say about this topic. For sources, look at the suggested readings at the end of the text chapter relevant to your topic. Seek the help of college librarians for scholarly journals relevant to your interest.  As you do your research, be sure to take appropriate bibliographic notes to create in-text citations and for preparing the Works Cited page using MLA format.  If you are having difficulty about how to handle this requirement, visit the Writing Center in S500.  The purpose of this section is to give intellectual scope to your work and to demonstrate appropriate skills in writing an academic research paper.

Description of Experiments: Be prepared to experiment with the technique you have selected for a period of several weeks. Describe your experiments.  Include at least three different settings, such as work, a school related situation, a personal relationship, or a family situation. Go into detail. Describe the following:

What were the contexts in which you experimented with the technique?
What were the relationships you have with the other parties? (Do not experiment with strangers.)
How did you conduct the experiments?
Where did you conduct them?
What did you notice?
What changes did the technique bring about?
Did things go as they always had in the past, or did new outcomes emerge?
Did the other parties notice your new actions?
Were they aware, and if so, did they comment?
Were there secondary outcomes not anticipated?

Be certain that your experiments are intended to produce only positive outcomes.  Do not do anything that could have negative, harmful, or unethical effects.  Do not experiment with strangers.

Conclusions: What do you conclude as a result of your experiment?  It is OK to include mixed results. What role do you think this technique has in your interpersonal communication?  Will you use it in the future? Does it suggest additional actions on your part?

Hopefully, this project will provide you with practice in and insights about a technique that enhances your interpersonal communication and, therefore, your relationships.  If you deem it valuable, this technique can become one you will use throughout your lifetime with beneficial results. Maybe, it will inspire you to experiment with other communication enhancing techniques.

Required Format:

Use the New Times Roman font, size 12.  The paper cannot be handwritten.
All four margins (left, right, top, and bottom) must be one-inch wide.
Properly capitalize the title. Center the title, using the central justification icon, not the space bar. Do not use the bold print, underscore, quotation marks, or italics in the title.
Double-space the text between the lines.
Enter two spaces after a period.

Please write a short paragraph answering One question in each act below. Each act should have 1 short paragraph with quotes and citations in APA formats to support the answer

Act One

1.What is the backdrop for the arrival of Don Pedro and his men? Why is this significant to the plot of the play?

2.What is the substance of Don Pedros private conversation with the lovesick Claudio? Why is Don Pedro in such a hurry, do you think? Is it a good idea for him to woo in Claudios place? Why or why not?

3.How do we know that Beatrice and Benedick are in a skirmish of wit? Who seems to be winning? What is said that leads the audience to believe these two have a past, and why is that important, particularly when we reach Act 3 and Don Pedros trick?

Act Two

1.In what ways does this Act reveal Hero to be different from Beatrice, and why might that be true? Why does her uncle tolerate Beatrices insistence on remaining a maid but tell his daughter to accept Prince Don Johns offer of marriage (should he make such an offer)?

2.Why does Beatrice tease Benedick at the party, and why is he so upset? What is she insinuating about him? Why does he care? Finally, why does Beatrice turn down Don Pedros offer of marriage?

3.What happens in this Act between Balthasar and Margaret and Ursula and Antonio? How are these events important to the rest of the play?

Act Three

1. In Act 3, we at last hear something from Hero. What does she say? How is she different when she is among other women than when she is in the company of her father and other men? How does scene one enhance our understanding of her character? Dont forget to discuss scene 4.

2.In this Act, Beatrice and Benedick are tricked into falling in love. How does it happen, and why is it so easy? (Think about this one carefully).

3.Constable Dogberry and the Watch are introduced in this Act. These are civilians who are paid to patrol and stand guardremember that Leonato, Heros father, is Messinas governor. Why do you think Shakespeare introduces them here and why is Dogberry written to be so pompous and uneducated? (Appearances versus reality, perhaps?)

The crucial focus for this week, examines the reasons, justifications and horror of imperialism and colonialism.  The supplemental material found on the left-hand side of the weekly section will provide further insight.

Speciifically, the novelist JosephConrad painted the evil of the Belgian Congon during the reign of King Leopold  Even staunch supporters of Social Darwinism  and the idea of the White Man’s Burden winced at what took place in the Congo. However,  they missed Conrad’s contention. The very participation by Europeans in imperialism and colonialism eroded human morality, and would lay the groundwork for future horrible events.

There are two fundamental questions. First, why did the Europeans engage in a global race to dominate the peoples of the world? The demand for raw material, cheap labor and creation of economic derpendency  fueled this race for global domination. One of the later arrivals to imperialism and colonialism, was the United States. Prior to the 1890’s the United States was wary of global ventures. However, fear of being shut off from the overseas markets and being dependent upon Europeans for materials/goods changed the nation’s stance.  Thereby,  the 1890’s witnessed justification for US entry to imperialism from Alfred Thayer Mahan’s argument that naval power determined global authority, and Frderick Jackson Turner’s “frontier thesis” which argued the United States’ purpose was change the world into a democracy.

In short, whether it be Social Darwinism, White Man’s Burden, or the Frontier Thesis the Western  Powers constructed philosophical justifications to exploit. What each of us need to come to terms with is whether these events eventually helped modernized the world  and the conditions of its inhabitants?
