Select a sample of social media content (from Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, or any other social media platform with which you are familiar and that is substantially/primarily text rather than images) that consists of at least 10 posts, tweets, or comments totaling at least 250 words. You may do this by simply copying and pasting posts from a web browser, or by using R (or another tool) to grab a sample (a screenshot is OK too but will limit your options for analysis). Choose an analytic strategy: you might hand-code, read holistically, use comments in Word, use software such as Atlas,ti, or calculate sentiment or other attributes using R (or another tool).

The content analysis assignment will have three products for submission:

1. A memo of around 750 words describing what you wanted to know or thought you might find, how you chose your sample and why, what you found (be thoughtful about how or whether your findings are generalizable), and how you might improve on it in further research.

2. The text you analyzed.

3. Documentation/representation of your coding/analytic strategy.

This may be combined with 2, for example, you might list everything in a Word document with all of the text and the comments where you’re making notes about it, or output from R that includes both the text of tweets you analyzed and their sentiment score, etc. If utilizing the ouput from R, scan and upload.

Choose five articles that meet the criteria below. Read each one, and take notes using the notes feature in Zotero. Your notes can be in narrative/paragraph form or bullet points or any other format that works for you, but must be at least 250 words for each article, including the key points and conclusions, some description of the case/evidence/methods used, and your assessment of the article, including any concerns you have about its methodology, validity, generalizability.

Gathering physiological data on consumers can be difficult; however, in the future we may all be providing such data every time we enter a store. Imagine entering a store and having your face mapped via an infrared sensor. Your face map is then used to match you against a data bank of shopper profiles suggesting whether or not you are in a mood to buy. Does this sound too futuristic?

Face mapping is currently receiving a lot of attention from a variety of quarters. Security experts tell us that face mapping can alert security services to certain profiled behaviors. Dermatologists say face mapping may provide solutions to long-term skin care. Others say that face mapping can be used to insert a persons picture in real-time advertisements. Thats rightyoull be in the ad that you see in the store or are viewing on a screen. You could watch yourself flying a helicopter in a U.S. Army ad, see yourself walking across the graduation stage in a college recruitment ad, or check yourself out as you model the latest fashion that the store has to offer.

Research the subject of face mapping via secondary research sources. Think of a new application (i.e., idea generation) for face mapping and describe it. Describe how you would test to see if your new application might work. What ethical and legal issues might face mapping bring if it was practiced on a large scale? Summarize your thoughts on the application and future of this technique.
