Writing/Grammar Students that write in a clear fashion and correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes get better grades.  If it is hard to understand your paper because of proofreading errors, your grade is hurt in two ways.  First, I take off points for proofreading errors.  Secondly, when I cannot understand your argument because of these mistakes, your grade drops substantially you risk losing points if the paper is simply unreadable.  Your grade improves if you write well.

What are academic sources? This means 1) peer reviewed journal articles in a criminological or sociological journal or 2) a special topic book written by an expert in our field.  This excludes: Government reports, websites, Wikipedia, your textbook, report from a website, non-specific textbooks and/or pamphlets from an agency.  You are required to have two academic sources for your outline and term paper.  If you choose to exclude two academic sources in your term paper, you will lose thirty points in your paper.

Why is Citing Important? – If you follow these citation rules you are not in danger of committing plagiarism.  Plagiarism is reported to the appropriate authorities and you fail this class.  If you are ever in doubt about how to cite something just ask.  Do not risk your class grade CITE ALL SOURCES!

Writing Tips

Do not use contractions (dont cant Im) it makes your argument less scientific and less robust
Do not use jargon and slang always write in a professional and academic manner
Avoid using the passive voice (there has been) use active voice (there is) this really helps your writing check out this Webpage about active/passive voice – it is really helpful: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_actpass.html
Proofread your papers and have (at least two) others do so as well, you will lose points if your paper has mistakes in them this also makes it hard for the grader to understand your analysis and it GREATLY hurts your argument.

A literary analysis or film evaluation is an opinion. The writer forms an opinion about a literary work or film, then presents that opinion (and, more importantly, evidence supporting that opinion) in the form of an essay.  Essays about literature / film should be written in third-person point of view, like any other analytical essay.

For this assignment, write a two – three page literary analysis or film evaluation (your choice) focusing on a piece of literature or film you have a thorough understanding of that presents something noble about the human condition.  No super heroes, aliens, monsters, or imaginary subject matter.  The subject must be something about people.  How does it show the power of the human spirit?

The analysis should offer an opinion backed up by evidence from both the primary source and credible secondary sources detailing why the selected work is a quality piece of literature or film worth the time of a reader / viewer.  Include three forms of support from the primary source, and one form of support from three separate credible secondary sources to support your opinion.  Use internal parenthetical citations in the body and complete bibliographic citations on a references page to document the use of all sources.

All drafts must be submitted in MLA format, as Word documents, using internal parenthetical citations in the body of the essay and  complete bibliographic citations on a works cited page to document the use of all sources.

This activity involves choosing and watching the movie, “Dead Poet’s Society”  and using that context to understand some of the theories and concepts discussed in the text and in class. You may end up watching the movie more than once throughout the semester, as you consider the story and characters in light of various concepts.

Write a short paper 5 pages plus cover page and reference page with the following questions in mind based on what you have learned in class over the semester. Your paper must be in APA format. Make sure to cite theories, definitions and other materials utilized in your paper. You should have a reference page as well in APA format along with a cover page.

Questions:

1.        Is this teacher effective? If so, what characteristics demonstrate effectiveness? If not, what could be done to improve effectiveness? Provide examples and make connections to your own experiences and course content.

2.        Comment on the developmental level of the students. Be sure to consider all aspects: physical, social, cognitive, moral, etc. Relate this to course content. For example, what impact does cognitive development have on instruction and assessment? How might social development affect the teachers choice of instructional strategies?

3.        What is the general impression conveyed by this movie in its depiction of teachers and students? What impact has this movie had on you as a future teacher? What behaviors would you like to model in your own classroom? Why would you want to model these behaviors or characteristics? Provide examples.

4.        Comment on motivational issues presented by teachers and students. What aspects of motivation theories discussed in the text do you find in the movie? How might you resolve motivational issues of teachers and/or students?

Each topic must include at least 10 credible sources.  The possibilities for topics are numerous.  There are all kinds of information about environmental, conservation, infectious diseases, agriculture, vaccines, autoimmune diseases, biotechnology, energy, climate change, the list goes on and on.  Pick a topic that you are interested in learning more about.
Each project must contain both written and visual information organized in a creative format.

informative essay about cricket with visual aides. minimum of of two pages. It will be five minutes speech,
mostly based on facts and figure.
The facts are presented about a specific topic.
It is necessary to have at least three reliable  sources to support claims.
add some life by using visual aids, images or appealing photographs.
Topics can include general information covering history, evolution and other necessary information about a specific topic.

In your introduction be sure to mention the text and the author’s name. In the introduction state the author’s full name. Any other time the author is mentioned in your paper state only his/her last name (ex: Sotomayor, Cofer etc.). The last line of your introduction is where you must mention your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be a strong assertion that you will discuss and support in your paper. If you find yourself having difficulty formulating a thesis, you can start by asking yourself a question about the text. Your answer will become your thesis. For example: How does King convey to the reader the importance of civil rights? King uses metaphors and similes to . Your thesis may evolve and/or change as your write your paper. During the drafting process, it is okay to tweak your thesis statement.

The first paragraph after the introduction should be a summary of the text. Summarize the text as if the person reading your paper has not read the text you are critiquing. It would be like trying to tell a friend about a movie without providing the background information.  In the summary do not use quoted material from the text or discuss anything specific about the text. The summary should be a general overview of what the text is about.

Each paragraph after the summary should begin with a topic sentence. Do not start or end your paragraph with a quote. A topic sentence states the particular subject that will be discussed in that paragraph. Your topic sentences will come from the bulleted list you create in your outline. Those bullet points will eventually evolve into your topic sentences.  Your essay must discuss and prove the rhetorical effectiveness of the text.  You will need to focus on 2 rhetorical devices used in the text.  Some rhetorical devices you could discuss are: the use of metaphors, similes, tone, imagery, anaphora, and personification. You will need to look at and analyze the deeper meaning behind the use of these devices.  What does the author really mean?  Why did the author choose to write it this way?  What message is the author trying to convey to the reader/audience?  Are his/her methods effective? Why or why not? You must choose 2 rhetorical devices to write about.

You must include 4 quotes from the text. These quotes will be chosen by you to support your thesis statement. You must incorporate them into your paper properly. A quote cannot be dropped in your paper. A quote should be preceded by a signal phrase to let the reader know that quoted material is coming. For example: McDonald states, He was a lumpy little guy with baggy shorts (93). You must then discuss the relevance of the quote to your thesis.  Basically, your paragraph should begin with a topic sentence, the middle should be your evidence/quote from the text and end with your analysis of the information.
You must:
have a strong thesis statement that includes the 2 rhetorical devices you will examine
have a summary of the text
have a clear and thoughtful introduction and conclusion
paragraphs that begin with a clear topic sentence
have 4 quotes from the text
have a clear and logical progression of ideas
use appropriate sentence structure, word choice, grammar, spelling and punctuation
show a significant revision of ideas, language and style from the first to the final draft
include a Works Cited page
be formatted for MLA style typed, double-spaced, 1 margins, and stapled
use the same heading as the previous paper
