Persuasive essay

To respond persuasively, you will need to take a position on an issue: you will agree or disagree with the selected author or with a point raised by the author. Otherwise, this essay will be rather informal, what is sometimes called a personal perspective argument. You may think of it as a personal response that takes the form of an argument.

Your essay should be at least 500 words in length, excluding the work cited page. In addition, it should adhere to proper MLA format (which means, among other things, that it must be typed and double spaced). Please see the rubric for this assignment for additional criteria.

You will have one source only for this essay: the selected text from the list above. Please do not do any research for this assignment.

INSTRUCTIONS:
This assignment consists of a short essay question, and a short response question. The main intent of these questions is to ensure that you have a sound grasp of the fundamentals of the material presented in this unit. To that end, there is a 3 to 4 page (1000 words) limit for the short essay question. Im not so concerned with whether you agree with a particular author or not. The quality of your answer is based on your exposition of the competing positions, your comparative analysis of those positions and, lastly, your argument in support of the position you defend.

As with all the assignments in this course, the short essay question is not designed to be a research question. There is no requirement to get material from external sources such as other authors, or reference websites, who have summarized, or criticized, the authors you are dealing with. In effect, including such material defeats your purpose in completing your essay because you are essentially telling me what some other person thought about the material you should be explaining and assessing. If you make reference to sources external to the course readings it will be detrimental to your mark. In some cases, I may ask you to re-work and submit your assignment. The point of your essay is to formulate the course material and develop your critical response. You can do this by working with the course material and developing your own ideas about the issue. The essay is simply your opportunity to set that out in paper.

QUESTIONS: (The total possible mark for this assignment is 100 marks.)
1. Short Essay Question: (90 marks) Consider the three arguments in support of the existence of God: the Ontological argument, the Cosmological Argument, and the Teleological Argument. Explain these three competing arguments by making reference to the authors included in our course readings. Which argument offers the most plausible justification for the existence of God? Explain why.

2. Short Response Question: (10 marks) You should try to limit yourself to two or three paragraphs for this question.

The logical problem of evil maintains that the God doesnt exist because of a logical inconsistency. Explain that logical inconsistency.

Paper No. 2: Career Plan: (10 points) This paper is designed to help you think through your own career path.  1) Start from what you have done already, by examining your past strengths and honestly assessing past liabilities.  If you have had academic or career difficulties, how did you overcome these adversities? What have you learned from them, and what steps have you taken and/or do you need to take to avoid these in the future?  2) Examine your strengths: academic, social and personal.  Consider how to use these strengths to get where you want to go.  3) Finally, where you want to go from here? Have you researched this career?  Do you know anyone who already works in this career? Do you have a mentor?  What are the many steps, large and small, you would need to take, and what is your plan to achieve them? How will you sustain your drive on your way to success? Who will help you? Is there a person who could get in the way in this momentum?  How will you deal with any adversities that come up?

This week’s topic, information security policies, is perhaps the most important topic that a Business major can take from this course.  This is the governance layer that lays the bedrock for your organization’s security posture.  Sure, the technical folks are responsible for executing on that policy but this is where the leaders of a business get together, reach agreement, at times do a sanity check on what is enforceable in the organization, and draft the rules that will make sure the organization is secure.

This is not an exercise in putting down whatever “sounds” good in order to check the box and claim that your organization has policies.  It takes a realistic perspective and evaluation on what is needed, what is possible, and what is enforceable.  It is typically better to a have a weak policy that is enforced than to have a strong policy that is ignored.

The resources provided include three articles on approaches to drafting and information security policy.  Among the steps is to select a framework or set of standards.  These could include “best practice” frameworks such as ISO 27001, NIST SP 800 Series, COBIT, ITIL, or similar guidelines.  Depending on the industry, this will likely also include “compliance” standards such as PCI-DSS, HIPAA/HITECH, SOX, FISMA, GLBA, or other legal and regulatory obligations.  The resources provided include the NIST CyberSecurity Framework as an example of best practice frameworks and the PCI-DSS compliance standards for those who process credit cards.  Both of these will include specific elements or policies that should be included in your overall policy set.

Additionally, I have included links to the Greater Houston Partnership’s Cybersecurity Assessment Tool, the FCC’s CyberPlanner Tool, and the Traveler’s Insurance Cyber Risk Pressure Test.  These tools can help you evaluate your organizations current posture.  Such evaluations can help to flesh out the organizations policies much like the best practice standards.  Additionally, from a learning standpoint, they are a bit easier to go through than something like the full PCI-DSS standard.

Last, but definitely not least, I have included a link to the SANS security policy template library.  When it comes to actually drafting policies.  These or similar “out-of-the-box” policy templates can provide a good start and help to understand the level of detail needed.  Remember that details are important, but it should not be so complicated that it must be updated constantly or that it becomes unmanageable.  This includes considering how much time you have available for dealing with policy issues.

This is a lot of information.  My primary concern this week is that you take the time to review the resources.  It would be impractical to have you draft a policy or try to regurgitate all of what you see here.  Read the articles, skim the frameworks and standards, tinker with some of the assessment/planning tools.

For your web project, I’d like you to pick three things that stood out to you.  This could relate to the process of drafting the policies, the contents of the frameworks or standards, the usefulness of the assessment/planning tools, the format/contents/level of detail in the policy templates, etc.  Just choose any three things you learned and share your thoughts about them in about 500 words.  This is an informal assignment.  Citations are not necessary unless you are quoting, but may be useful to indicate what you are referencing.

He stinks!- one girl screamed. I looked around and realized she was talking about a boy next to a window near our teachers desk. He is retarded, another girl told her, leave him alone. It was (….year) or around that time when there were no special education classes. I remember that boy was sitting always alone and sometimes he screamed or had tantrums. During other times he went to girls dress room before the PE class, hoping he could find any of them naked. No one paid attention at him and everyone knew that he would be working as a worker when he grows up.
I wanted to talk to him because I wanted to help. But how could I help if I was bullied myself. So, one time I was sitting alone on the bench and that boy was around. I asked him if he did his homework. He answered he never does his homework and he does not have to. He was repeating his grade twice and eventually they would let him go because they need labor in the country. I asked him why doesnt he want to try again and again. And he said he was tired of trying, because it did not work for him. But, he said, I am just a retarded person and I really hate math and reading. And he left.
I was thinking that I was not smart myself, or was I? Sometimes, I used to catch myself rereading word math problem so many times because I tried to understand it. Many children believe that they arent smart, arent fit, or just cannot probably accomplish what they want because they didnt achieve it on the first try. Its not the number of attempts that counts, but the ultimate accomplishment, that is what really counts. From that day on, I learned that whenever I fail or fall short, I know that all I have to do is go beyond the boundaries and try harder, again and again. Only then, will I succeed. I also want to teach my future students not to give up, I want them to succeed in life by trying and learning from their mistakes.
