Signature Assignment: Agency Assessment
Each student will complete a formal paper as the signature assignment in this course. The purpose of this paper is for students to utilize their learning experience, research, and critical thinking to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts and theories presented during the semester.  Students will reflect upon and analyze a specific social problem of relevance to social work, and assess an agency that is working to address that problem. Special emphasis will be placed on the analysis of social work values, systems theory, the strengths perspective, and scholarly research. This paper will be turned in at the end of the semester and will be considered the final course assessment.

The suggested length of the paper is 8-10 pages not including the cover page and reference page.  The paper must follow APA style. No abstract or conclusion is required, however, the paper must include a title page, running header with pagination, be double spaced using Times New Roman 12 pt. font, use in-text citations where necessary, and include a separate reference page.

The first major task for the Agency Assessment assignment is to select a social problem of relevance to social work (e.g., child maltreatment, substance abuse, racial disparities in health, etc.) that will be the focus of your paper.  Once you’ve selected a specific social problem you will then locate at least three scholarly sources of information (e.g., book, peer-reviewed journal article, etc.) that document the prevalence of the problem you selected, explain the underlying cause(s) of the problem, and identify potential solutions/effective interventions.  This task will be completed in Module 9.

The second major task is to then identify an agency or organization that is working to address the social problem you selected.  The agency/organization can either provide direct services (micro/mezzo level interventions) or the agency/organization can be focused on policy and systems advocacy (macro interventions).  In terms of geographic focus, you are free to select an agency/organization that operates at the local, state and/or national level.  However, whichever agency/organization you select be sure that you are able to collect enough information in order to complete the assignment.  The most efficient approach will be to select an organization with a detailed website, but you might also reach out to the agency/organization directly if the needed information is not available online.  This task will be completed in Module 12.

The required sections of this paper are listed below along with a set of questions and prompts, each of which should be addressed in your paper.  Be sure to include headings in your paper to mark the beginning of each new section.

Section 1: Primary Social Problem (suggested length: 1 page)

What is the social problem that you have chosen to focus on?  Be sure to provide a clear definition for the problem you’ve selected.
Based on scholarly sources, how common is this problem in the United States?
Based on scholarly sources, what group or groups are most likely to be affected by this problem? (Be sure to search for research on any disparities that might exist with respect to race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, etc.)
Section 2: Causes and Solutions (suggested length: 2-3 pages)

Based on scholarly sources, what are the underlying causes of the problem? (Be sure to note if there are competing theories for why a problem exists.)
Explain how the underlying causes relate to ecosystems theory and the person-in-environment perspective.
What solutions have been proposed to address this problem? Are these solutions evidence-based?
Section 3: Social Work Values (suggested length: 1-2 pages)

What social work values are most important for understanding the problem and thinking about how we should respond?  Be sure to provide a detailed explanation for why you  chose the values you did.
Do the proposed solutions that you identified in the previous section (Causes and Solutions) conform to social work values?  Why or why not?
Section 4:  Agency/organization Evaluation (suggested length: 1-2 pages)

Provide a brief overview of the agency or organization that you selected.  Where are they located? Who do they serve and/or who do they advocate for?  What services and/or advocacy activities do they engage in specific to the social problem you selected?
Do their services and/or advocacy activities reflect a strengths-based approach?  If so, describe. If not, how could the strengths-based approach be enhanced?
Are their services evidence-based and/or do they advocate for evidence-based solutions? Explain.
Section 5: Self-Reflection (suggested length: 2 pages)

How did completion of this assignment change your thinking about the social problem you selected?
What are your thoughts about the adequacy of your selected agency’s or organization’s response to that social problem?  What are they doing well?  Where could they improve?
What value conflicts might arise in social work practice when addressing the social problem you selected?
Is this a social problem you would like to address as a future social work practitioner? Explain.

Write an essay that addresses each of prompt’s 2 components,Issue Position and Explanation and Application, outlined below

Issue Position:

First, Identify whether you are for, or against use of the death penalty as a form of criminal punishment (there is NO right or wrong answer). Successful completion of this assignment, and its learning objective, require your compliance in identification or your personal position, and perspective, towards the issue of the death penalty.  Responses are confidential and will be graded objectively, based on students independent, reflective analysis of their own individual personal perspectives,  and application of the information.

Explanation and Application

Then, Discuss, and describe, the nature of political debate, surrounding the issue of the death penalty, and explain how your personal position toward the issue has changed or been reinforced, with regard to application to crime, punishment and justice in Texas, based on what you learned from the movie.

This is a problem analysis paper using the authors arguments we read throughout the semester. I will upload the authors texts on a file named Reading Citations. You have to mainly use them as your reference. You have to write everything in the lens of Bourdieu’s capital which is economic , cultural , and social capital . Economic capital is usually money , cultural is things like education , social is the hierarchies and connections and other social factors. I uploaded Bourdieu’s text. For example when arguing about migrant women low wage , “due to their low economic capital”.

a.      Main argument: The migration and working conditions of migrant women domestic workers in Qatar shows the inequalities and precarities that these women endure to be able to support their families.

                                                              i.      Supporting claim 1: The inequalities start at home due to gender inequalities and poverty that force these women to migrate.

ii.      Supporting Claim 2: In order to migrate, these poor women become in debt due to the high fees many of them pay in order to be able to migrate.

iii.      Supporting Claim 3: Once in Qatar, their limited economic capital helps them to support their families but in most cases is not enough to avoid intergeneralizational poverty, thus social class reproduction is bound to happen in the next generation.

This is the outline I am following. The context has to be in Qatar so as evidence but you could use other evidence to talk about problems of gender inequality generally for example. You have to use Parennas as the main evidence because she is the most related to my case and her material was studied throughout the course. Use keywords such as precarities , capital , social class reproduction , privilege , inequality.

Remarks my teacher gave me on the draft:

Carmelitta is a character from my creativity I used to personify the problem. Carmelita is a filipino migrant domestic worker. The essay has to be on domestic workers not all workers. You could modify Carmelita’s story if you want.

For paragraph 1 :

Dont focus on poor working conditions follow the outline properly. Focus on poverty and how gender inequality made her migrate from the Philippines. So the paragraph should talk only about the inequalities that made her migrate from the Phillipines. Parennas argues that their husbands are not always around and they dont do their duties which is a reason for them to migrate. Use other evidence also.

Delete anything about Miller because he talks about the context of the U.S.

Paragraph 2 : Talk about the inequalities they face from the agents hiring them and the inequalities they face in the migration process. Dont talk about poor working conditions in this paragraph neither. You could say that most agents are illegal and they promise a certain job or wage but the workers get surprised when they get here . You could benefit from Carmelita here.

Paragraph 3 : Here , you start talking about poor working conditions when they arrive to Qatar. Potential sources are Human rights watch and Amnesty International. You could talk about the kafala system which limits the workers freedom and does not let them change jobs or travel without employer’s permission. You could use Carmelitta and you could link to personal experience as a Qatari individual with domestic workers working at my home. You could let Carmelitta narrate her friends stories.

Paragraph 4 : Talk about social class reproduction and how these workers are likely to transmit their social status to their children creating a cycle of generational social class reproduction and inequality. Something I thought of is Carmelitta’s child wants to become a doctor , but her low economic capital which resulted also in her low cultural capital (education) prevented her from this dream. A relevant source is Parennas 2019 “precarity chains”.

Change the whole draft but im uploading it for you to have an idea .

The COVID-19 pandemic has proved to be an extremely difficult challenge for the Trump Administration and figured prominently in the debate associated with the 2020 Presidential election campaign. The issue has dominated the headlines and caused major social, economic, political as well as educational disruption over the last nine months or so. Despite reassuring messages and a growing degree of resignation from some public figures and media outletsthe virus has not disappeared and has in fact continued to spread across the country in waves as the death toll rises, confronting leaders with an ongoing series of complex, difficult and ethically-charged decisions and communications challenges.

Needs at least 8-12 well-chosen articles or videos on different aspects of the issue (and leader/s) in focus, though you may want to use more of course.

Your assignment is to write a well-crafted 1200-1600 word essay exploring this issue and the leadership (or mis-leadership) and ethics exhibited by U.S. leaders in addressing it. The essay should include well-developed answers to the following cluster of questions:
From the vantage point of November 2020, do you believe that the COVID-19 pandemic should be considered a national crisis as defined in the readings for this course? [Make sure to include and apply at least one explicit definition of crisis from the course readings and discuss to what extent COVID-19 has or has not fulfilled the criteria associated with that definition over the course of the pandemic thus far.]
Several of the readings (e.g. by Elliston, OLeary, and Marcus, Dorn et al) identify situations where experts or other subordinates may feel the need to guide leaders to make better-informed decisions, attempt to convince leaders to change poor decisions, correct misleading communications, blow the whistle or otherwise act to resist policies adopted by leaders. Briefly describe at least two forms of such bottom up leadership to be found in the course readings and provide examples from COVID-19.
Using the book by Gini and Green as a point of departure, evaluate the leadership of one of the following leaders with regard to COVID 19: President Donald Trump, Vice-President Michael Pence, Dr. Anthony Fauci, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Vice President or Presidential candidate Joe Biden. In other
words, to what extent do you think your chosen leaders response to this issue is consistent (or inconsistent) with Gini and Greens list of modern leadership virtues. [Make sure to discuss at least three of the virtues.]

The following sources are drawn from somewhat different political and journalistic angles and should help to get you started. Please be source critical and sensitive to bias as well as the difference between news and opinion pieces. You are encouraged to find and use additional sources as needed regarding the issues and the specific leaders you are writing about. Do not worry if for some reason you cannot access a particular source on this list; other equivalent sources (including ones that may be published over the course of the week) are fine to use too:
