Textual Analysis Essay

Three to Six pages with Three Sources in MLA Format

Dont write what you think you ought to say; instead, write what you see and what you feel.  Read a story and find the central message.  The message should not be a clich nor anything that you have heard before.  The message should be fresh and non-obvious.  To find an interesting message, you must read between the lines and find a subtext.  In the subtext is the wisdom.

Make the message your thesis statement.

For example, Dr. Seusss Green Eggs and Ham shows that a narrow-minded attitude turns one into a life-hating curmudgeon, but when one tries something new with someone new, for the sake of trying something, one turns into a cosmopolitan with a newfound zeal for life and a variety of experiences.  You can call the essay, From Fool to Foody: Finding the Spice of Life in Green Eggs and Ham.”

Organization

Your first paragraph should be devoted to explaining your thesis statement.  Can you explain what you mean by your claim in different ways?  Do what you can to clarify the thesis statement as if you were talking to a neighbor or a friend.  Do not write sweeping generalizations like People have always had an aversion to unusual food.  Sweeping generalizations always fall under one of two categories: the obviously right and the obviously wrong.  Dont state the obvious like All people eat food.

Your body paragraphs should be a series of subclaims (topic sentences) which are supported with evidence and analysis.  Each paragraph should look as follows:

            Topic Sentence

            Clarification

            Contextualization of Evidence (Brief Summary)

            Quotation of Evidence

            Analysis of Evidence

Repeat the processes.  Ideally, you should follow your curiosity, ask lots of why-questions, and write with your natural voice.  After youve written naturally flowing analysis, then conform your writing to the organizational outline.

Your last paragraph should notnotrestate the thesis statement and the major points.  I said dont restate your thesis statement and the three major points.  If you restate your thesis statement et cetera, you will bore the reader to tears and lose points.  A conclusion should be, ideally, an emphatic statement in which the reader has been prepared.  Dont write in conclusion.

What Ill Be Looking For

Write narrowly-focused paragraphs.

Write a narrow, original, and arguable thesis statement.  That is, a non-obvious claim that goes against the grain of clichd thinking.

Close reading of the text with sound logic and penetrating analysis.

Write in the third person.

The absence of the following words: very, truly, only, just, ever, never, all, way, how, actually, still, also, plethora, copious, numerous, positive, negative, impact, and being.

Write being after the word human.  Being should be used when referring to someones or some creatures beingness.

Accurate pronouns.

Not repeating words in a sentence.

Dont write that is and that are.

This week you will continue adding insights or events from memories of your own childhood, or that of family members which might illustrate, elucidate or contradict what we have learned in class concerning school and childhood. Report Cards, school pictures, your own art work or school compositions which illustrate a particular aspect of school as both structure and process  may be useful additions to your text.

1. Why did God make children, according to Comenius? How does Comenius vision contribute to changes in  the  image of childhood? What is “modern” about Comenius’ approach to education. Compare with maria Montessori. Locke?

2. Looking at School Background Sheet and at Cunningham materials assigned for this week please discuss mandatory school attendance as the portal through which state influence begins to structure childhood. What , in your opinion, was the previous government change which had the greatest impact on the way children were perceived in the West? How does the poem “Vitai Lampada” illustrate the role played by English elite boarding schools in Imperial Britain and how would this type of school serve as a counterweight to state influence.(Hint- focus on “public”, “private’ “civil” divisions discussed on “School” sheet.

3. What is the relationship between secularization, Utopianism and childhood?

Senator Daniel Moynihan, once said, “everyone is entitled to his own opinion but not his own fact.” This project aims at helping students understand viewpoints and biases in news coverage of global events. It will also help apply the skills so developed in analyzing the fake news/alternative facts.

In this paper students will analyze a global news headline from a major international news event, problem or political issue outside of US, (from last 5 years) from four different perspectives/sources.

An international wire service (eg. CNN, Associated Press, Reuters, BBC etc.)
A correspondent from a major US daily (eg. NYT, WSJ, USA Today)
A correspondent/newspaper in the country in which the event problem or the issue occurred. (eg. Al Jazeera, Dawn, Times of India, El Colombiana)
A correspondent/newspaper in a third country besides US and the one involved. (eg. The Mail and Guardian- South Africa)
Instructions:
Explain why you chose this news headline. Outline the main points and most significant aspects of what occurred and why as presented by the chosen major international news agency.

Compare the wire service report with the article by a correspondent/ editorial writer in the US. Which facts /aspects of the news agency story are of most interest to the US journalist? Which, if any, are disputed, which considered unimportant and ignored? What piece of information would a person relying on this news item know or not know compared with someone who had only read the wire service news?

Compare the news agency news report and the report in the US newspaper with the report of the journalist where the action took place. Does the home country journalist have some information, which the wire service and US journalist do not? Are there aspects in the story, which look like they have been censored or downplayed? What piece of information would a person relying on this news item know or not know compared with someone who had only read the wire service news and the report of the journalist from US?

Compare the article by the third country journalist with the accounts of the wire service, US journalist, home country journalist What piece of information would a person relying on this news item know or not know compared with someone who had only read the wire service news and the report of the journalist from US and the home country?

Summarize and analyze the points of similarity and difference in the four accounts. Include your own opinion as to the possible reasons behind the differences. Are they reflective of the different geopolitical attitudes ethnic and cultural differences, diverse ideological points of views gender perspective or just diversity in the outlook of the writer? Which of the four was in your opinion most accurate, that event being seen in hindsight? Bulk of your points ride on your analysis.
