Your essay must have a Works Cited page in proper MLA format. The essay should be professional, double-spaced, neatly typed, and in a clear, easy to read font. You should make use of two to three outside sources for this essay, not including your text. Do your own work. Do not plagiarize. Plagiarized work will receive an “0.” Otherwise, your ideas should be your own. You must incorporate textual evidence (quotes/details, cited in MLA format) from the work itself to support the claim(s) you are making in this essay, as well. Every body paragraph should contain at least one MLA quote. Write original material. Do not just fill up the paragraph with quotes; make your quotes short. Quotes should usually be only one sentence long. I want your words, not Gillman’s. Use them to support what YOU are saying. Also, avoid summarizing the story in the essay. You may choose to focus your essay on a particular element of Gillman’ short story. There are many that would be a fine choice for a short essay like this. For example:

What is important about the title, “The Yellow Wallpaper?”
Could the wallpaper have been any other color? How would a change in color have changed the story? How does the color “yellow” affect you? Do you like (or dislike) it? What are the psychological implications of the color “yellow”? How would a different color change the story?
How does the narrator’s description of the wallpaper change over time? How is the wallpaper representative of the domestic sphere?
Why do you think Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote The Yellow Wallpaper? Historically, the story was based on personal experience (autobiographical)–how effectively does Gilman employ the events of her life to create this work of literature (Links to an external site.)?
How does Charlotte Perkins Gilman reveal character in The Yellow Wallpaper?
Do you care about the characters? Do you like (or dislike) them? How real (or well-developed) do they seem to you?
What are some themes in The Yellow Wallpaper? Symbols? How do they relate to the plot and characters?
What is the central/primary purpose of The Yellow Wallpaper? Is the purpose important or meaningful?
What is the role of women in the text? How are mothers represented? What about single/independent women? What is important about women–in the historical context?
How does the narrator’s relationship with her husband evolve/change? Does her mental state improve or worsen?

Contributing productively to a conversationacademic or otherwisemeans first looking to see what others in the conversation have said and developing something worthwhile to contribute; in these regards, youve mostly done your homework (figuratively and literally). But making your case successfully requires more than simply writing whatever pops into your head.

REVIEW
Earlier in the semester, we read Chapter 2: Rhetorical Analysis in Critical Reading, Critical Writing: A Handbook to Understanding College Composition. Back then, the point was to learn to read texts in contextto comprehend not only the words on the page but also the circumstances in which the text was produced, including the context it was written in, the audience it was written for, and the writers purpose in relation to that audience.

This time around, we will revisit thinking rhetorically (thinking in terms of audience, purpose, and context), though with the intention of better understanding the rhetorical situation of your own project so that you might craft your essay to give it the best possible chance of success. If necessary to refresh your memory, review/reread Chapter 2 (Links to an external site.) in Critical Reading, Critical Writing: A Handbook to Understanding College Composition.

WATCH
Watch the video, “What is Rhetoric” (Links to an external site.); some of it will be review from the first unit, but most of it will help you in the next step below.

WRITE
Write a 1-2-page reflection in which you break down your rhetorical situation accordingly:

The context of your project: What various disciplines do the researchers writing about your topic publish their work in? What are the aims of those disciplines, and what issues, challenges, or controversies are those disciplines contending with? Which journals were your sources published in, and what are the particular interests of those journals? More broadly, what relevant issues, challenges, or controversies are taking place in the world outside of the scholarly communities youve invested?
Your audience: Whom among the scholarly communities you mentioned above do you hope to reach with your project? What matters to them, and what do they currently know, think, or believe about your topic?
Your purpose: What would you like the audience you identified for the bullet above to think, feel, or do about your topic as a result of reading your essay? What claim will you be making that they might potentially disagree with, and what competing claims will you have to contend with?
Your strategy: In what ways might your audience object to your claim, and how might you address those objections? In what ways might you best appeal to your readers to persuade them of your claim? How might you best connect your claim with what matters to your audience? Where is the strength of your argument, and how might you emphasize that strength through the framing and execution of your essay? What kinds of appeals would your audience most likely find persuasive and how might you craft your essay to best meet their expecations?

An understanding of the factors surrounding womens and mens health, infections, and hematologic disorders can be critically important to disease diagnosis and treatment in these areas. This importance is magnified by the fact that some diseases and disorders manifest differently based on the sex of the patient.

Effective disease analysis often requires an understanding that goes beyond the human systems involved. The impact of patient characteristics, as well as racial and ethnic variables, can also have an important impact..

An understanding of the symptoms of alterations in systems based on these characteristics is a critical step in diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. For APRNs, this understanding can also help educate patients and guide them through their treatment plans.
