For your second research project that will be due in Week 14, you will be writing a brief researched essay that will address one aspect of your reading in the second half of the course (Modules 3 & 4).

Your submission must be at least 1000 words in length, and it must incorporate the number of primary sources assigned in the prompt and at least two substantive secondary sources from the library databases (no websites).  Make sure that your analysis includes support from the texts themselves rather than simply a summary of those texts. You should use proper MLA formatting, including heading, parenthetical citations, and a works cited page.  Your essay must be saved as a Word document or as an RTF file.  If it is not, it will be counted late and not accepted.

Choose one of the following options.

1. James Joyces Stephen Dedalus imagines history as a nightmare from which, he says, I am trying to awake. Engagements with history as, broadly speaking, a nightmareas trauma, as wound, as deprivationare common in modern and post-modern American literature. Select two works from Module 3 & 4 that engage with, critique, and/or portray American history (Lowell, Faulkner, Wright, Hayden, and/or Jarrell to name a few) and write an essay in which you compare and contrast their literary approaches to history.

2. In her study Female Masculinities, Judith Halberstam argues that:

Masculinity in this society inevitably conjures up notions of power and legitimacy and privilege; it often symbolically refers to the power of the state and uneven distribution of wealthbut, obviously, many other lines of identification traverse the terrain of masculinity, dividing its power into complicated differentials of class, race, sexuality, and gender. (2)

Modern American writers have identified and analyzed many of the problems and benefits of modern masculinity through their characters (think Homer Baron, the tinker, Sykes, etc.). Select two to three works from Module 3 & 4 that portray and analyze the problems of modern masculinity. Argue how those problems connect to a larger issue of class, race, sexuality, or gender.

3. In Sylvia Plath and Theatre of Mourning, Christina Bitzolkais states that Although Plath’s ‘confessional’ tropes are often seen in terms of a Romantic parable of victimization, whether of the sensitive poetic individual crushed by a brutally rationalized society, or of feminist protest against a monolithic patriarchal oppressor, her self-reflexivity tends to turn confession into a parody gesture or a premise for theatrical performance. This idea of theatre and parody can shed new light on the quest for self and the role of the individual in a problematic society that we see in Plath and Ginsburg. We have seen this quest before in the poetry of Whitman and Dickinson as well. How can the idea of parody and theatre help to unpack the quest for self in the poetry of these four poets? What ideas of self and society have changed in the hundred years plus that separates them? What has stayed the same? Are these poets demonstrating that we as a nation of individuals are still having the same problems?

4. According to the biography of Audre Lorde in our textbook, her poetry wages a war against the tyrannies of silence; it articulates what has been passed over out of fear of discomfort, what has been kept hidden and secret (1490). This war could be against racist practices, a patriarchal society, government control, the boundaries of society as a whole, etc. This war against silence can be seen in much of the poetry and fiction we have read during Module 3 & 4. Using the entry point of a war against the tyranny of silence, discuss a social action pushed by two or three of the works we have read in Module 3 & 4. How did this work fight against the tyranny in its time of publication and how is it (or isnt it) fighting against that tyranny today?

This is a full-length essay of 1500 -2000 words (not more!), excluding bibliography or endnotes.
The paper should answer the research question using short case studies and at least SIX peer-reviewed sources as a minimum (no maximum).
– Use at least THREE sources from the courses required or optional readings. (I provide the articles in the attachment)
– Provide at least THREE peer-reviewed (journal) sources of your own.
The essay should include an Introduction (that outlines the theoretical framework for understanding the topic) and use examples or a case study to present and analyze the topic. The analysis must reflect your own critical understanding of the problem, and not simply describe it or summarize the analysis of others. The Conclusion should relate the research to at least some of the broader themes of the course and explore implications for policy, activism, or future research. (Broader themes of the course: Food security and international development/ Food security and public health/ The environmental context of agriculture/ The future of smallholder farming).
APA is the preferred style for citations and references.

Research question: Can agro-ecology (i.e. more organic and environmentally-friendly techniques) be as effective in producing food as industrial farming? Support your answer with evidence of productivity, and sustainability of food systems, taking into account the challenge of feeding the 9 billion by 2050.

Communication is essential to leadership success, but knowing how and when to use your business communication tools often takes time and practice. Consider the following case study:
You are the manager of a team of workers, and Diego is one of your employees. Before joining your department three months ago, Diego worked six months in another area. Since assigned to your unit, Diego has been repeatedly late for work or absent. Other employees are complaining. You’ve learned that Diego had a similar problem in the other department.

Company policy states that if an employee is warned of such a problem and the behaviors continue, the individual may be given a three-day suspension without pay.

One important item to consider: Diego, when hes on the job, is a top performer and someone you definitely want to keep on the payroll. He can run circles around the other people. He just has problems with tardiness and absenteeism.

Instructions

Your goal with this assignment is to create a comprehensive communication strategy to correct Diego’s performance issue. You plan to schedule a face-to-face meeting with Diego to address the matter. First, you must notify Diego of the meeting via email. Next, you must plan the agenda for your face-to-face meeting with Diego.

Step One: Email – Create an email for Diego to notify him of the meeting. Use Chapter 6: Formatting for Correspondence (pp. 133-147) in Business and Professional Writing: A Basic Guide by MacRae to help you format your email. For the body of your email, use Chapter 8: Bad News Letters (pp. 162-173) as your guide.

When composing your email, consider the following questions:

How should you communicate the purpose of the face-to-face meeting to Diego via email?
When do you feel is the best time of day and day of week to hold the meeting?
Where is the most appropriate location for the meeting? Diegos work station? Your office? Other locations?
Based on your answers, include the date, time, and location for the meeting in the body of your email.

Step Two: Face-to-Face Meeting Agenda – Every successful meeting has a pre-planned agenda. Read the following guidelines on How to Conduct an Effective Disciplinary Interviewby Ruth Mayhew.

When creating your meeting agenda, consider the following questions:

What outcome do you need to communicate to Diego during the meeting? What do you believe is the best course of action to handle this problem? Should you counsel Diego and issue a verbal warning? Write a formal letter of reprimand? Suspend the employee for three days without pay? Other actions?
How can you clearly communicate company expectations and what you need from Diego moving forward?
Submission Instructions

To submit, compile your email and face-to-face meeting agenda into one document with separate pages. Use a standard file type (DOC or DOCX) and name the file your surname, module number, and title of the assignment (e.g., surname_M2_PerformanceIssue).

Q.1 Partially completed products arrive at a workstation in a manufacturing operation at a mean
rate of 40 per hour (Poisson distributed). The processing time at the workstation averages 1.2
minutes per unit (exponentially distributed). The manufacturing company estimates that each
unit of in process inventory at the workstation costs $31 per day (on the average). However, the
company can add extra employees and reduce the processing time to 0.90 minute per unit at a
cost of $52 per day. Determine whether the company should continue the present operation or
add extra employees.

Q.2 The Universal Manufacturing Company produces a particular product in an assembly line
operation. One of the machines on the line is a drill press that has a single assembly line feeding
into it. A partially completed unit arrives at the press to be worked on every 8 minutes, on average,
according to an exponential distribution. The machine operator can process an average of 10 parts
per hour (Poisson distributed). Determine the average number of parts waiting to be worked on,
the percentage of time the operator is working, and the percentage of time the machine is idle.

You must post your thread of 600 words or more by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of the assigned module/week. Then, you must reply to at least 2 peers threads in 200 words or more by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the same module/week.

Developing self-awareness starts with taking time to reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses, what distresses you, and what you find most comfortable in social work practice with your clients and colleagues. You have read about many theories and models at this point. There may have been theories and models that you were more inclined to use. Or there may have been theories and models you were not comfortable using.

The Theoretical Evaluation Self-Test (TEST) was developed by Daniel Coleman. It is a quantitative instrument that measures a therapist’s theoretical orientation. It consists of 30 close-ended statements with a 7-point Likert scale, asking the extent of agreement about psychotherapy, the human psyche, and the therapeutic process (Coleman, 2003, p. 74). The seven theoretical orientations that are measured are psychodynamic, biological, family systems, ecosystems, cognitive, pragmatic, and humanistic.

Coleman (2003) cautions that the TEST is not meant to give therapists a conclusive and definitive sense of their theoretical orientation. Rather, the goal is to promote self-reflection about their personal tendencies toward approaching therapy.

For this Discussion, you take the TEST to stimulate self-reflection. You will also take some time to reflect on all the different theories and models covered in this course.

To prepare: Take the TEST. There is both a web-based version, noted in the Learning Resources, and a paper version of the TEST.

Post:

After taking the TEST, post your results.
Explain in 2 to 3 sentence the extent to which you were surprised or not surprised by the TEST results, and explain the reasons why you were surprised or not surprised.
After looking back at the array of theories and models that were covered in this course, identify the top three theories or models that most appealed to you.
Explain in 3 to 4 sentences how your personal values, worldviews, life experiences, and/or your personality influenced your selection of the top three theories or models.
In this course, you were asked to select one case study to use throughout the entire course. Describe this experiencefor example, the degree to which it was helpful to focus on one case, what you learned, what could perhaps be done differently.

For this assignment, you need to start by thinking about a potential persuasive speech topic. Please see the persuasive speech topic list on Canvas for ideas. Next, think about your argument(s) for your position.  Most arguments will have counterarguments, so for the next part of this assignment, brainstorm any possible counterarguments.

For example, if your speech was going to be about why we should vote for a specific presidential candidate, the counterarguments would be about why we shouldn’t vote for that specific candidate. So, any opposing arguments that could potentially weaken your argument are considered to be counterarguments.  Using your potential persuasive speech topic, answer the following questions for this assignment:

1. What is your persuasive speech topic? What side are you going to be arguing? (for example: “for animal testing” or “against animal testing”).

2. List all counterarguments that oppose your position/claim (your claim is what you are trying to prove or persuade the audience to do or believe).

3. Choose the strongest position against yours and list it here, along with how you will address it in your speech. See your textbook for ideas on how to address counterarguments.

4. Which persuasive speech organizational pattern will you use to organize your main points? Why did you choose this pattern?

5. How do you plan to use ethos, pathos, and logos in your persuasive speech?  Please be as specific as possible and write about all three (ethos, pathos and logos). For example: “I will appeal to pathos by providing…”

The Controversy:  Does buying green products improve the environment?

Passage 1.  Con:  from Buying Green Products Is an Inadequate Environmental Remedy by Monica Hesse

“When wannabe environmentalists try to change purchasing habits without also altering their consumer mind-set, something gets lost in translation.”

Buying green is a sign that people recognize the need to protect the environment, claims Monica Hesse in the following viewpoint. However, she argues, consuming green products is not the solution. Consumption will not solve the nation’s environmental challenges, Hesse explains. To be truly green means to buy less, not green, she maintains. Replacing products thought to be environmentally unsound increases consumption, which in turn increases environmental problems, she reasons.

In satiric fashion, she admonishes the green consumer:

Congregation of the Church of the Holy Organic, let us buy.

Let us buy Anna Sova Luxury Organics Turkish towels, 900 grams per square meter, $58 apiece. Let us buy the eco-friendly 600-thread-count bed sheets, milled in Switzerland with U.S. cotton, $570 for queen-size.

Let us purge our closets of those sinful synthetics, purify ourselves in the flame of the soy candle at the altar of the immaculate Earth Weave rug, and let us buy, buy, buy until we are whipped into a beatific froth of free-range fulfillment.

And let us never consider the other organic optionnot buyingbecause the new green consumer wants to consume, to be more celadon than emerald, in the right color family but muted, without all the hand-me-down baby clothes and out-of-date carpet.

Passage 2.  Pro:  from Buying Green Products Will Improve the Environment by Jenny Shank

“There’s a certain thrill, that you get to go out and replace everything,” says Leslie Garrett, author of “The Virtuous Consumer,” a green shopping guide. “New bamboo T-shirts, new hemp curtains.”

Garrett describes the conflicting feelings she and her husband experienced when trying to decide whether to toss an old living room sofa: “Our dog had chewed on itthere were only so many positions we could put it in” without the teeth marks showing. But it still fulfilled its basic role as a sofa: “We could still sit on it without falling through.”

They could still make do. They could still, in this recession-wary economy, where everyone tries to cut back, subscribe to the crazy notion that conservation was about … conserving. Says Garrett, “The greenest products are the ones you don’t buy.”

There are exceptions. “Certain environmental issues trump other issues,” Garrett says. “Preserving fossil fuels is more critical than landfill issues.” If your furnace or fridge is functioning but inefficient, you can replace it guilt-free.

Ultimately, Garrett and her husband did buy a new sofa (from IkeaGarrett appreciated the company’s ban on carcinogens). But they made the purchase only after finding another home for their old coucha college student on Craigslist was happy to take it off their hands.

The sofa example is what Josh Dorfman, host of the Seattle radio show “The Lazy Environmentalist,” considers to be a best-case scenario for the modern consumer. “Buying stuff is intrinsically wrapped up in our identities,” Dorfman says. “You can’t change that behavior. It’s better to say, ‘You’re a crazy shopaholic. You’re not going to stop being a crazy shopaholic. But if you’re going to buy 50 pairs of jeans, buy them from this better place.'”

Then again, his show is called “The Lazy Environmentalist.”
