Please view a video of a complete concert by a world music artist or band — that is, one from a non-western music tradition.  Acceptable genres and styles of music include any of the music presented in our textbook and lectures. (Note:  a blues/bluegrass festival is also a possibility) 

(Please do not review a symphony concert or a non-western symphony performing symphonic or western art music in a concert. This will not work for a study in non-western art musics such as this course.)

After reading the selected works of Charles Sanders Peirce and the secondary source by Floyd Merrell, reflect on the difference between the sign of Saussure (as arbitrary/semiology) and that of Peirce (non-arbitrary/semiotic).

  In his article regarding national identity and language in Europe, Stephen Barbour writes that the concept of the nation is primarily a 19th & 20th century phenomenon bound up with economic and social developments of Europe or in Europe and the Americas. (Barbour, P. 29) Now, says Barbour, the concept of the nation has extendedvia colonialismto other parts of the world. Here, he considers some key problems with the concept of the nation in terms of economics, culture, history, identity, territory, and language.

After reading the article by Barbour, consider some of the negative consequences of the concept of the nation and linguistic nationalism.

Recall that in the beginning of this piece Barbour states that the concept of the Nation is problematic in the sense that it is highly difficult to delimit and define (here lies its theoretical problems in the social sciences). Also, he states that its very nature as an everyday phenomenon is problematic.

So it is true that accidents may make it more difficult for native speakers to understand and sometimes it would cause miscommunication where the accuracy would be suspected illustrating my experience at the Toronto airport with the staff from the customs, I had to answer, which day, I was, I was out in Canada, which I left for a four month, summer vacation, and could not remember the specific dates, the first time the staff asked me I said I lived around maybe about the end of April and the second time she asked me, I said maybe at the start of May. So, it is easy to identify that I am not sure about the specific date of departure but the staff appear to be so mad and even slams the table and challenges my inability. I assume that she had prejudiced on me based on my looking and my accent since such incident did not happen in an airport before, or even after that day, I believe that, improving English pronunciation is more difficult than other aspects of language since it is hard to throw away our speaking habits from our home countries such as tone of voice grammar and pronunciations. It is said by Alyssa that most countries it isn’t very conductive to language learning in general, this is true when considering Chinese schools. We don’t actually focus that much on English speaking, she further says that, even if we want to practice English speaking skills through having conversations between our classmates, we can improve our pronounciation or change our accent since these people who we have conversation with also have accents. What we need to do to prevent misunderstanding is to build trust relationship, were suggested by Marco, that we need to speak confidently and change our tone of voice to let others believe us. In addition, I think we also need to speak clear and easy for others to pay attention to our words, rather than time accents. Thank you.

2. today I would like to discuss with you three articles, I have recently read. And actually I can say this was a good experience. It was really interesting and fascinating so I just pointed out really good points for myself in the future. And also, I found this really intriguing that, you know, people, I mean not people, but people’s brain is really affected by accident, because it feels it’s something, something alive, or isn’t logical, it says about to be encouraged with the end to be out of, out of group. So it means to have different linguistic or cultural background. So it’s actually really interesting by the way it goes. I’m never, I’ve never thought about it this way. And also another article it’s really sad to recognize that a lot of researchers have shown up this actually people with accent. If they have a problem for, for example career promoting or to be fully understand, and this kind of mistreatment, kind of, not to racism, of course, but sometimes it feels like, because you know, even if you even if you speak English you can express yourself. People just often cannot hear what you’re saying, because they have a prejudice, of your accent they think you’re not fluent or not. You’re, maybe you’re not having a good English. That’s why, but I also believe that improving this part of language, excuse me, pronunciation. It is really hard job to do, because it’s our nature, it’s how we’re born. It’s not that you can practice your learning skills your listening skills your reading skills, writing skills. It’s something else. And we have to understand it, all of us.
