“Tired of being cooped up in his house during the pandemic, Rami decides to renovate his backyard into a fun-filled hang out area for his family to enjoy. Rami hires Saul, a licensed landscape contractor, to put in a pool, trampoline, BBQ area, and putting green. Saul is highly respected in the industry and because of his many years of experience in landscape design, also works as a direct retailer for several landscape manufactures, which allows him to pass along discounts to his customers. After agreeing upon price and terms, Saul gets to work on the project while Rami shops for fun accessories. After a few months of renovation, Ramis backyard oasis is complete and he is thrilled at the outcome. Rami decides to throw a backyard BBQ & pool party for his family and a few vaccinated friends in his quarantine bubble to celebrate complete with balloons, music, and decorations.
The party is a hit and Ramis friends and family are so excited to enjoy the new backyard. Soon, however, things start to go awry. . . after swimming, Ramis neighbor Shale eagerly jumps on the new trampoline but quickly loses his balance, slips and hits his head on one of the metal springs, injuring himself. As Rami attends to his neighbors injury, he does not see that one of the balloons has left the bunch and floated above the new propane grill where the helium from the balloon ignites and causes an explosion sending smoke and debris over the whole block. At the same time, Ramis son George who has never played golf before mistakes the putting green for a driving range and hits a shot right into another neighbors bedroom window. The glass shatters and injures Marge who was folding laundry. As Rami surveys the damage, he realizes that one of the trampoline springs was not properly attached, causing the trampoline to be slightly uneven. Dismayed at the destruction in front of him, Rami calls Saul to complain about the defective trampoline. Saul tells Rami the trampoline came fully installed from the manufacturer and that he should contact them with any issues. Identify all pertinent legal issues and discuss.”

When we think about documentary films, we might think of them as representing the real world or the world as it really is. While fiction films rely on scripts to take us into imagined lives that happen in manufactured worlds, documentary films arise from real-life events that happen in real places in real-time and thus seem to reveal truths about the world and its workings. But what happens if we think about documentaries as nonfiction narrative films that represent the world in particular ways? Though a documentary film may appear to represent subjects and subject matter without artifice or mediation, this position should be analyzed to take into account particular points of view, which become manifest through a films perspective, commentary, style, narrative/narration, and methods of persuasion.

What are the techniques they used to tell this story? Interviews, types of b-roll, archival footage, etc. What is the structure? What is missing?

Post 1:  Your primary post should be a direct response to the assigned weekly film lab and should not only address and answer all elements asked for, but also demonstrate completion of any additional reading assignments.

In 3-5 sentences, summarize the film as if you are describing it to someone who has not seen it. Do not give a blow-by-blow report, but convey the main story, characters, and theme(s) in your own words.

In 3-5 sentences, give your personal critique* of the film you may focus on any elements you wish. Be specific dont just say I liked the acting or It was boring tell why you liked the acting and give specific examples, etc. Try to avoid statements starting with I like and instead try statements such as, The first thing I see is or This _______ stands out for me because of the (color, composition, sound, movement).

Finally (and most importantly) how does the film support, characterize, or exemplify the content covered on Canvas and/or any assigned readings? (Or not?!) Use specific examples to support your answers.

Post 2:  should be a question of your own about the film. What confused you? Was there a scene you want to know more about from your classmates? Ask your classmates what they thought of a particular scene, sound score, editing technique. Make sure your question includes your insight and isnt completely open-ended. For example: Did anyone also notice that whenever the villain appears in the film, there is a constant drumbeat sound? It made me think of a heartbeat and added to the suspense. What other interpretations do you see? And are there more places in the film that music is used this way?

Critical Analysis Essay Guidelines
Explanation of Critical Analysis Essays
You are to write four formal (either APA or MLA) critical analysis essays of an assigned article, approximately 650 words
each, applying principles of critical thinking to your analyses. In addition, you are to apply one Saint Leo University Core
Value to the assignment. Core Values are listed in the syllabus.
These essays must be submitted to the Dropbox, which is linked to Turnitin. Please see the syllabus for more information
about Turnitin.
Critical analysis involves going into the depths of the subject or material to be reviewed and discussing it objectively so
that the readers get to know the subject better and in details. A format for critical analysis should not only be a review and
contain a summary of what other critics say about the work. The major purpose of it is to voice your concerns, views and
opinions based on correct and logical evidences.
You should be reflective (think deeply and engage in multiple rewrites) not reflexive (inserting the first ideas that come to
mind.) When you find one assumption, always ask whether anything deeper has to be taken for granted for that
assumption to be true. You may find a more profound assumption.
Be thorough and precise and especially, be convincing. Feel free to use “if” clauses, “it is possible” clauses, “for his
reason X to be true” clauses, and “for the reason to support his conclusion” clauses, or any other creative device you
choose to show the impact of any ambiguity or assumption that you have identified.
Since the required word count is only 650 words, (please abide by that within 50 words in either direction) it is important
to be concise in all parts of your analysis. Writing and following an outline is crucial to remain focused on your argument
and avoid summary or irrelevant description.
Refer to the Grading Rubric for more information about requirements and criteria for grading.
Format of critical analysis:
A. Introduction Your introductory paragraph should set the stage for what is to follow. Use a catchy first line to grab
the readers attention. In this paragraph you should present the central theme, the thesis statement, and facts
surrounding the main theme. Any important definitions and terms that will have relevance in the body can be defined and
explained here if necessary.
B. Short summary – Provide a very brief summary of the work being reviewed. Then preview your argument, briefly
stating what you will attempt to prove your argument. Never present any more than the minimum that the reader needs
to know to understand your argument.
C. Body C. Body This should be the bulk of your paper. It is where the scope of the thesis should be explored and
where the facts and data presented in the article are analyzed and checked for their logic and accuracy. It is where you
will present details of the reviewed material and where you ask the critical thinking questions we have covered so far in
the course. You should identify and discuss any and all ambiguous terms and phrases, value and descriptive
assumptions, fallacies, sources of evidence or lack of sufficient evidence, credentials of authorities, and appropriate
citations, etc. It should clearly demonstrate how your analysis and evaluation influences how you reacted to the
reasoning. Most importantly, it should be your argument about the article and not a summary. Even though you are
potentially only referring to one source, you still need to cite your information using parenthetical citation or footnotes /
endnotes. In this section you will also apply the relevance of your chosen core value as it relates to the critical analysis.
D. Conclusion This final paragraph should sum up your overall conclusions. It should not contain any new or additional
information. It should very briefly restate the ideas or arguments that have already been presented in the paper and more
so point out the importance of your argument. Provide an interesting closing – a striking statement or a dramatic example
with reference back to the thesis statement, making an impact and signaling the end of your essay
