Website Analysis

Part I (This part helps prepare you to gather information, kind of like a prewriting exercise. This part is not turned in.)

First, review in your mind the rhetorical principles of ethos, pathos, and logos.

Then, surf the Internet and choose one site you feel is effective and one that you feel is ineffective.  (I use quotation marks because there is no such thing as a completely effective or ineffective website; these are just general impressions.)  You may even choose from the list of websites you analyzed previously when exploring technical information online.

It might be easier if you chose sites that were similar in topic and scope.  Also, try to choose websites that are either home pages or that are at a similar link level.  That way, you wouldn’t be comparing completely dissimilar things.

Now, compare and contrast the two sites, making notes on your observations.  You might choose to focus on some of the following areas or just a couple of them:

Ways each site addresses the rhetorical concerns of ethos, pathos, and logos
Color and its relationship to the sites purposes
Ways text and graphics complement (or don’t complement) each other
Overall document design (Refer to the textbook for ideas.)

Now that you’ve analyzed, it’s time to write it up formally.  Instead of writing in essay form, though, like you did for the technical document analysis assignment, I’d like for you to write using technical writing conventions.  There are some similarities to an essay, though. THIS IS NOT AN ESSAY

Your analysis should be relatively brief (about one page).
Single-space your document, double-spacing in between sections or paragraphs.
Include headings.
Include a brief introduction and conclusion.
Use bullet statements to compare and contrast the sites.
Attach the sites you have analyzed. Or include the URLs in your paper.

Carla is a waitress at an upscale five-star restaurant in New Brunswick, NJ. She is represented by the United Waitress and Waiters Union, Local 601. One evening, several hours into a particularly busy shift, she encounters a customer who complains loudly that his meal is overcooked, his wine tastes like gasoline and the service is lousy.
After drinking several glasses of the wine, the customer shouts at Carla, You are a (expletive) idiot. Having reached her boiling point, Carla empties the remaining contents of the customers half-eaten dish on the customers lap after yelling loudly, How do you like the food now? Just about everyone in the crowded restaurant hears the commotion and the complaining customer, embarrassed by the experience, runs out. Carlas supervisor and two coworkers witnessed the entire altercation. Carlas supervisor calls Carla into his office and discharges Carla for her role in the incident.
The Union files a grievance and argues that discharge was too harsh a penalty given the customers drunken, aggressive and unacceptable behavior. Besides, the Union representative argues, Carla was never warned that this type of conduct could result in discharge, Carla had a blemish-free employment record for the nine years that she waitressed in the restaurant and last year a bartender at the restaurant got into a shouting match with a customer who also drank too much and only received a three-day unpaid suspension. On top of that, similar to Carlas situation, the bartender poured a glass of beer on the drunken patron.

Using the seven tests of just cause listed below, analyze this case based upon all of the facts that have been presented and briefly list your thoughts supporting your opinion. As far as the award is concerned, as the arbitrator you have the following choices to choose from:
a) Reinstate Carla with full back pay since the employer lacked just cause for the discharge
b) Reinstate Carla with no back pay since her actions cannot be tolerated but the employer acted improperly by ordering termination
c) Deny the grievance and support managements decision because no employer should have to tolerate such crude behavior towards a customer by an employee.

Select the remedy that you feel best supports your opinion in this case.
The Seven Tests of Just Cause:
1) Was the employee forewarned of the consequences of his or her actions?
2) Are the employers rules reasonably related to business efficiency and performance the employer might reasonably expect from the employee?
3) Was an effort made before discharge to determine whether the employee was guilty as charged?
4) Was the investigation conducted fairly and objectively?
5) Did the employer obtain substantial evidence of the employees guilt?
6) Were the rules applied fairly and without discrimination?
7) Was the degree of discipline reasonably related to the seriousness of the employees offense and the
employees past record?

Field Analysis

The purpose of this assignment is to recognize sociological concepts at play in your lived experience.  Keeping a field log of your social and institutional experiences for one day, you will critically discuss how your daily life is shaped and constrained by society. This will allow you engage with many of the sociological concepts learned in class.

Writing expectations

The paper should be 5 typed pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, with 1″ margins.  Remember to use APA format to cite and reference your sources.

Instructions

1) Observation

Create a field log (example).  For one day, observe and record the key interactions and institutions in your lived experience.  Starting with waking up, who is the first person you talk to?  What do you do next- take family members to school, go to the gym, go to work and interact with coworkers?  Throughout the day you will take on different roles by interacting with different people and in different situations, and be in contact with different social institutions (education, government, health, etc). Type or photograph your field log and submit it with your written Assignment.

2) Application

Try to wait one or more days before starting this step.  Revisit your field log and apply sociological analysis to your observations.

Describe how our day is shaped and constrained by social norms.
Analyze how at least four sociological concepts learned in class (eg. roles, institutions, interactions, impression management, stage theory, emotional labor) apply to your field log observations.  This part of the paper should not be focused on the general social norms you described earlier, dig in with specific concepts in this from our text (refrain from using dictionaries).
For at least two of the concepts, find and incorporate an appropriate source that highlights how sociologists study this concept in everyday society (for example, emotional labor in the restaurant industry).  Not sure what constitutes an appropriate source?  See our Announcement on this in the classroom- tips and a learning module are provided there.  For example, we discussed gender socialization:
In an article by Crespi (2011) that studied gender socialization and gender roles within the family, results showed that a cross-gender relationship between fathers and daughters, mothers and sons has emerged as significant in determining traditional and non-traditional gender attitudes. The research suggested that the relationship with the parent of the opposite sex could be a strong factor in reducing stereotyped attitudes regarding gender roles (Crespi, 2011). *Use a different example in your paper, the purpose here is to show your research skills rather than repeat my research skills.*
3)      Reflection

Reflect on your role as a larger part of society (i.e. your motives, instincts, feelings, and/or structural constraints).  Discuss ways other people affected you and the ways you affected others in the social experiences of your day.

Below is a brief field log to give you an idea of the social interactions and institutions you might look for in your day.  With the observations are sample course concepts that relate to the observations.  Be creative in exploring and applying concepts- we will all apply concepts differently even if the scenes we observe are very similar.
