Considering the timeliness and relevance of #Unfit to this week’s module, I have created this thread to discuss the documentary. Avoid polemical approaches (e.g., I like this or hate that), instead addressing how the film employs various aspects of popular culture to make its political points. You may alway wish to comment on how the medium of documentary differs from “pure” entertainment fair like movies, TV, sketch comedy, etc.

Film Questions
As a spoof of the Bush presidency, what aspects of real life make it on screen in American Dreamz?

An argument is made that the president needs the show more than the show needs the president. How does this relate to the themes of the course?

How important is the popular culture presidency and what does the film show us about that?

Reality TV came of age in the Bush administration, but now a reality-TV star is president. What aspects of the narrative presage the Trump presidency?

The film treats the president as an “empty suit” used as a tool by his advisor (an ersatz Dick Cheney). Does this tell us anything about the office, especially in the current era?

Compare American Dreamz to Obama’s appearance on Between Two Ferns. Are there similarities or are these two totally different phenomena?

Assignment Details

Perform the following tasks:

Step 1: Watch Making a Way Out of No Way (1897-1940): The African Americans Many Rivers to Cross.  A link is available in the module.  At a minimum, watch the first 13 minutes.  In particular, pay attention to the material on Ida B. Wells.  (Be mindful that about 7 minutes in in the section entitled Jim Crow Laws the film shows disturbing archival photos of lynchings dont watch this with small children around)

Step 2: Read Parkers article, Desiring Citizenship (in this module).

Step 3: Answer one of the following questions.

Use a word processor to write your response to one of the following questions (please don’t all select the first question … let’s mix it up a little!):

Making a Way Out of No Way suggests that Ida B. Wells talked about sexuality anxiety as an important component of lynching.  What did Wells mean by this?  You might do some additional research into her book Southern Horrors, if interested, though Parker also addresses this topic in the article.
Turning to Parkers article who was Frances Willard?  Why did she and Wells disagree so strongly?
Ida B. Wells subsequently went on a speaking tour in Great Britain.  If youre interested, you can do some additional research on this topic, though its not necessary since Parker discusses it, too.  Why did Wells go to Great Britain?  What were the results of her British agitation?

Grazian argues that decision making in the media industries is primarily driven by the minimization of risk and provides many examples for support of his theory, including how the production of media typically adheres to traditional genre categories and other types of cultural conventions. While this may be a tad difficult to do due to much production being paused currently, research new shows, films, and/or other types of popular media (books, for example – though this may be difficult to do with music) being released soon and identify any trends that you may perceive as ‘traditional genre’ (if you are unable to find a suitable/detailed list due to the pandemic, perhaps research media released earlier this year or to be released next year; you could even provide a discussion on ‘remakes’).

For myself, after reading this chapter, I found myself retrospectively understanding why so many popular television shows were a bit similar – such as procedural cop shows. Did you experience the same thing? Provide your thoughts on the reproduction of traditional genres here.

*note: this is a graded discussion. Points are awarded for participation and can be decreased if your post does not meet the criteria detailed in the instructions (a minimum of 100 words and a short response to a classmate)

The first part of this course, we have been studying principles of evolutionary continuity in order to shed light on cognitive features that might make us human.  That is, features that might be exclusive to humans and no other species (to the best of our current knowledge).

In light of these concepts, does language qualify as a uniquely human trait? If so, can studying nonhumans teach us anything about language?  How?  If not, then why not? Bring at least three examples (of experimental evidence) from readings and class to inform your answer (note, if you choose to incorporate Project Nim, which you are welcome to do, that would only count as a single source of evidence).

The essay should write to the Governor of New York detailing the ban of natural gas
hydrofracking in the State of New York and what safeguards should be recommended. Write the letter from the point of view of a health scientist working for the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Public Health
Consultants, a branch of the US Dept of Health and Human Services. The first paragraph should introduce me and my position as well as a thesis statement on my three points.  The next 3 paragraphs will each make a separate and distinct point that backs up my position in the first paragraph. You must justify each point with fact/science (not
just an emotional plea). The last paragraph will contain the summary and
recommendations to the Governor on whether to allow hydrofracking operations in New
York and under what circumstances (i.e. regulations).

The paper requires at least three (3) mainstream
references. Mainstream means a peer-reviewed science journal, government agency,
an article in a major magazine or newspaper, a science-based advocacy group, or
information posted by industry.

Before most of you uttered your first words, a member of a famous American family faced an episode of personal behavior that resulted in the death of an innocent young woman.  That event was the inspiration for the recent film Chappaquiddick.

It is not up to us to sort through the history of the event, but the speech you watch today is a special type of speech: the Damage Control Address.  After viewing the video a first time, go back to the speech to address these four questions:

1.Where early in the speech does Kennedy offer some legitimate reason for why he would have been alone in the company of the young woman, Mary Jo Kopechne, by reminding them of the tragedy his own family had endured and what is he hoping to achieve through that association?
2.What are two basic “facts” that he wants to establish early in the speech that speak to moral conduct?
3.Through what three or four “turns of phrase,” does he hope to explain, in part, his inability to save the young woman’s life and to exonerate himself for “gaps” in his accounting the events to authorities?
4.What effort does he make as the speech draws to a close to remind his audience of his “more moral self” and to diminish this one event to a momentary lapse in a larger public existence?

Summarize the typical development that you observed in the child (i.e., the areas that you were able to check off on the checklist).
Explain the developmental concerns you have for this child based on your observation. If you did not see a clear concern, discuss at least one area you were not able to check off the checklist.
Explain, based on your observation and your desired future professional role, how you might support this child using developmentally appropriate practices.
Identify some developmentally appropriate activities you can do with the child to support at least two different developmental domains (physical, social/emotional, self-help, cognitive, language).
