–    Included a correctly formatted APA title page, including the title of your essay, your name, and date.  (A running head is optional)
–    Use in-text citations whenever drawing from a scholarly source and list the source in a correctly-formatted reference section at the end in APA format.

Good Man Are Hard to Find Rough Draft-Fiction Essay

Step 1: Select an author from the short fiction unit.

Step 2: Decide which story to analyze.

Step 3: Write out the theme or meaning of the story (THESIS)

Step 4: List three elements of the story that contributes to an understanding of this theme.

Step 5: Develop each of those elements into multiple paragraphs, developing each idea fully, organizing them carefully, tying each piece together to illustrate the theme.

Step 6: Find two literary criticisms about your story through the library databases.  Search for those that include a discussion of the elements youve written on.

Step 7: Incorporate those articles into your own essay, paraphrasing ideas of other critics that support or enlarge your own points, always documenting carefully.

Step 8: Include a Works Cited in MLA format as the last page of your essay, which must list both the primary text and the secondary texts. See page 73 for an example of formatting.

Step 9: Keep copies of the secondary sources.

Step 10: Write in present tense and argue from third person point of view.

Introduction: In the rough draft, you will have seven or more sentences before the thesis sentence. For example, you may have a short plot summary, biographical information on the author, a critics overview of the authors writing, or information about the time period that relates to your story.  Sample student introductions on pages 48, 51, and 69 may help you generate ideas.

Defining terms and analysing the question

The primary task of government is to promote economic growth. Though it has other roles, they are secondary. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

-Family breakdown is a serious social issue. Women should be encouraged to say at home and look after their children when they are young. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

-The military budget should be decreased so that spending on health and education can be increased. To what extent do you agree with the above statement?

-Obesity is now a serious issue which society must address. The most effective way to tackle the problem is to encourage people to do regular exercise. To what extent do you agree with the above statement?

-Globalisation has failed to lift the worlds poor out of poverty. It has merely increased disparities in wealth and power. To what extent do you agree with the above statement?

-Social media is having detrimental effect on young people. Its use should be restricted. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Above are the questions all you need to do is for each question analyze it. You need to write down questions that is important to ask in order to break down and answer the main question. Second thing you must include is clarification. Clarify what is meant and what you understand from the key terms in the question ex: terms can be interpreted differently.

Relate the Sandin essay to what weve covered in class (cells, genetics/variation, inheritance), AND reflect on part of the essay that strikes you.

This essay is written by a woman who was born with a birth defect that could have been caused by a gene mutation that results in the same defects as thalidomide. Thalidomide is a drug that was prescribed to pregnant women between 1958 and 1962 to reduce the effects of morning sickness, but resulted in thousands of children born with malformed limbs because the drug affected the growth of new blood vessels. We dont know if she has a new gene mutation or was exposed to thalidomide in utero.

Think about it as long as you like (but the deadline is 10/4) and write one paragraph to one page (200-500 words (remember, the essay itself is <500 words!))

You will get credit for adequately:

1) showing you read the essay by briefly summarizing it (paragraph 1),

2) demonstrating a passing familiarity with (a) the concept(s) covered in class- not only mention the topic(s), but define it/them and link it/them to the essay (paragraph 2),
