This week, you will complete your annotated bibliography for the problem-solution essay you began working on in Week 3. In addition to the source you identified in the Week 3 discussion, you will find four additional scholarly or academic sources (see Lesson 4 for specific details), for a total of five. These sources will be the building blocks for your essay, so be sure to spend time searching for sources, reading critically, and evaluating the relevance of each source.

For each source, provide the following.

The APA style reference
A one-paragraph summary of the relevant sections of the article written in your own words
An one-paragraph assessment of its overall quality and relevance to your essay topic
To help make sure your document is properly formatted and meets all assignment requirements, please refer to the Week 4 Annotated Bibliography Template and Week 4 Sample Annotated Bibliography located in Files. In addition, this week’s lesson and assigned reading will help you to identify and evaluate high-quality, relevant sources.

The grading rubric for this assignment is below.

Examine why the Civil Rights Movement stalled by the mid-1970’s. By the end of the 1980’s, how successful had it been? Were the desired freedoms won? What methods had it employed to best effect? Which strategies were most effective, and why? How did activism change? By 2005, what changes had taken place for African Americans? In this analysis, remember that African Americans are not a monolithic bloc. What divisions existed within the African American community by 2005?

You can choose if you would like to use a mixture of essay-form, list and/or chart/table.

*NUMBER 1 IS ESSAY FORM!!
1. State & define the selected the social problem: Why is it a social problem (site periodical and academic sources)?  What social institution is it aligned? Who is being affected? How are they being affected? For instance, if it is COVID-19, it would be social (healthcare, education, family); economic (employment), and political (policy (face masks, unemployment benefits, loan deferment).  The latter are just samples.

2.  Using the three sociological perspectives, explain how the social problem is understood from each perspective and offer a solution/recommendation for each.

3.  Develop three research questions that could be studied, cite the theoretical perspective and methodological approaches to study each of the research questions.  For example, To what extent are Black faith leaders addressing the epidemic of the pandemic in their Sunday morning sermons?  If you take a functionalist perspective, then we would look at the sermons as messages grounded in maintaining stability and order with church attendees.  A survey could be developed utilizing a questionnaire as a tool to capture the social problem and the perspectives of the church attendees.

You can choose if you would like to use a mixture of essay-form, list and/or chart/table except for #1.

II.  Identify three journal articles that represent each of the three sociological perspectives with a social problem

– Provide a journal analysis: What social problem/issue is discussed? What sociological theory did they use to frame the study (state it and then any concepts addressed such as power, stability, self-concept, individualism, meritocracy, prestige, learning, morality, inequality, etc.)? What methodological approach did they utilize (quantitative or qualitative – research design (survey, field research, comparative historical), tool used questionnaire, focus group, interview, content analysis, etc.)? What recommendations were made? Did the article help you better understand how to apply theory? Did their use of theory align with your understanding?

You can choose if you would like to use a mixture of essay-form, bullet point, list and/or chart/table.

Be smart, your journal analysis can be aligned with your first response so you won’t have to double work.

III.  Identify ONE media source (songs, videos, speeches, sitcoms, etc.) that represents concepts aligned with one of the three sociological perspectives

– Provide the lyrics, speech (a live link is okay) or post the lyrics and include the source.

– State the sociological perspective you believe is mostly aligned with the selected media source

– Explain why it is aligned to the sociological perspectives by highlighting concepts in conjunction with the media source (State excerpts as quotes from the media source)

African American women are usually not recognized as leaders. Of course, we must define what a leader is. We want to bring these women back into history. This essay will be on Wilma Rudolph. Remember that this is a formal essay and you need an introduction with a thesis statement, body, and conclusion.

Your second draft of your essay must:

be submitted by 9:35am on 10/1
be between 500-900 words
be written in complete sentences and broken up into multiple, coherent paragraphs
contain a revised, underlined thesis statement that clearly identifies the main argument of the essay. Your thesis should be revised and strengthened since draft 1.
contain appeals to ethos, pathos and logos.
cite evidence from at least two credible outside sources (from academic or internet research)
cite, using hyperlinks, all outside sources that are consulted. See file on Canvas titled Citing Sources in the Op-ed Essay for instructions.
contain an attention-grabbing title that accurately prepares the reader for the content of the essay
begin with an opening sentence (or sentences) that pique the readers interest
cite evidence from your own field research (personal experience, going to the scene, interview, observations, etc.)

Debate instructions:

There are two groups. Group A will support SNCC and what evolved into the Black Power movement. Group B will support the SCLC (Martin Luther King, Jr.’s movement). To participate in the debate, you need to research both positions. The required work will help you. Who will you be in this debate? What character will you pick? It does not have to be an actual historical figure. You can be, for example, a white SNCC worker, or a Black Panther working in the breakfast program. Stay in character for your responses because each response is part of the debating.

Debate should answer for GROUP B

Franklin D. Roosevelt said that to be an American has always been a “matter of mind and heart,” and “never . . . a matter of race or ancestry.” Was this true for African Americans? How did the language of freedom and democracy help open doors of opportunity for African Americans? What obstacles remained for full success?

Paper objective: The goal of the paper is to analyze Imperial Twilight by Stephen Platt within the framework of the class. This is based on the history studied, Sun Tsu, Machiavelli, and addressing some of the moral questions we asked. This paper is not a summary. Students are encouraged to focus on major themes of the book and how the themes of the Opium War link to wider significance, such as the impacts of free trade, the morality of said trade, sovereign ability of nations to control their economies, and the human stories involved in these relationships..
Questions to answer (not exhaustive, not all required): What are the major themes of the book? How does it approach the subject matter? What is the written quality? What are some of the ethical questions covered? How well do the ideas of Machiavelli and Sun Tsu apply to analyzing this historical period? Who is responsible for an illicit drug trade? How are trade relations in the 1800s comparable to the situation in the late 20th and early 21st century?
