Que. 1) Working with Kimmerers text we have looked at the indigenous relationship with nature as opposed to that of Western Sciences relationship with nature. There are many deep philosophical questions we could examine comparing the two. I want you to consider this one: Kimmerer suggests that our Western Science tends to diminish our relationship with nature (and by nature you can include any metaphysical understanding of existence). Do you think this is true? If you think it is not true than challenge her assertion and explain youre thinking around this. If you think it is true than talk about how we have come to this state and what we might be able to do about it. Remember, that we are living in the Time of COVID and clearly in this republic there is much to learn about the idea of a diminished relationship with existence.

Que. 2)

In the lecture and chapter on Toxic Legacy we discussed the two regions: Torne Valley at Ramapo New York, and Turtle Clan Country at Ringwood New Jersey. As you may recall, they are in very different states of recovery; while the Torne Valley has been completely excavated and remediation completed, Ringwood is sadly no where near the same place of recovery. What is the difference? How is it possible that these two municipalities have had such a completely different outcome? The toxins are the same. The discovery of the dumping has been thoroughly documented in both regions, and yet so little has been completed at Ringwood. Ringwood in fact has a greater number of immediate victims in the line of exposure! So, what hold up Ringwood getting full remediation? Compare them both in your answer and explain why Ramapo Torne Valley has been completed and Ringwood Turtle Clan Country remains toxic.

Wed like to get to know you better than grades and test scores. Please submit a brief personal statement (250 to 650 words) about one (1) of the topics below:

Due Week 3 and worth 30 points

When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking by playing the “Believing Game.” The Believing Game is about making the effort to “believe” – or at least consider – the reasons for an opposing view on an issue.

The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
In Part I of the assignment (due Week 3), you will first read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes: “The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful” by Peter Elbow. Next, you will review the Procon.org Website in order to gather information. Then, you will engage in prewriting to examine your thoughts.

Note: In Part II of the assignment (due Week 5), you will write an essay geared towards synthesizing your ideas.

Part I – Prewriting: Follow the instructions below for this prewriting activity. Use complete sentences and adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Select one (1) of the approved topics from the www.procon.org Website and state your position on the issue.
From the Procon.org Website, identify three (3) premises (reasons) listed under either the Pro or Con section – whichever section opposes your position.
For each of the three (3) premises (reasons) that oppose your position on the issue, answer these “believing” questions suggested by Elbow:
What’s interesting or helpful about this view?
What would I notice if I believed this view?
In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”
The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

In an argumentative essay support, challenge, or complicate  Andrews’s statement that:” Every bit of learning takes you further from your parents” (para 1).

Remember that in your introduction you should reference the author’s full name, give the article title as well as a brief summary of the article, and you should also state your main point (your thesis).  You should then list your main points (each of these main points will become a separate paragraph).  Each paragraph should contain a clear topic sentence and you should support that point in the remainder of the paragraph. Remember that you want to argue your points without relying on personal experiences to make those points.

Like last time, your essay must contain a clear thesis statement, support for that thesis, well-written paragraphs, clear transitional sentences between paragraphs, correct grammar and punctuation and a strong conclusion.  Keep in mind that the grading standards for English composition I include attention to mechanics and grammar, expression and usage, unity, organization and content.
