Instructions
Choose one topic from the list below and write an essay of approximately 1000 to 1200 words (about four double-spaced typed pages). Expect that if your essay goes over the length requirement, your essay could be returned to you for revision.
Begin your research. You might start with a general Google search and then a Google Scholar search, but you will also need to visit the AU library databases to find sound academic articles.
Find two to four reputable secondary sources and review them carefully. At least one source should be from a peer-reviewed journal article accessed through the AU library databases.
Develop a straightforward thesis that is sufficiently limited in scope (meaning something you can do justice to in a short essay).
Create an outline and consider speaking with your tutor to review your thesis and outline. We strongly encourage you to do so.
Write your first draft and include all of the following:
An introduction that includes an interesting lead-in and an explanation/summary of what the issue is. (As necessary, convince your audience that the problem or issue exists and that it matters to othersor should.) Then, still in the introduction, briefly summarize EACH side of the issue, and finally, add a thesis/essay map that takes a stance and clarifies the purpose of your discussion, without any kind of announcement. You practiced this skill in your second session of the discussion forum, so review your previous work and any suggestions your tutor might have made.
Body paragraphs that develop your viewpoint. The more thorough and detailed this section, the better. Dont leave any stone unturned. Use specific, logical examples and integrated paraphrases, summaries, and quotations from your research.
Opposing arguments/rebuttal.
A conclusion that does not repeat your thesis. Instead, write a suggestive conclusion in which you offer implications for the readers further consideration. Remember that this is your final opportunity to impress your reader.
Make use of at least two (and no more than four) secondary sources within your essay by adding quotations and paraphrases. Then, every time you paraphrase or quote, follow the four steps listed in assignment section of Unit 4.
Create a Works Cited (MLA) or References page (APA), and make sure to take this task seriously. We expect you to pay very close attention to detail and follow samples for each entry. We recommend Purdues Online Writing Lab (OWL) for all citation matters, but be aware that there is a citation generator on the site that belongs to an advertiser. Unfortunately, citation generators will NOT necessarily produce correct results. Thus, we strongly recommend you avoid citation generators of any kind, but if you are inclined to use one as a first step only, you will need to review this information from Purdue: Responsible Use of Citation Generators. Remember that your tutor is there for you, so if you have consulted the citation guidelines and still have questions, please ask for help.
Revise and edit your draft. You should have produced and edited at least one preliminary draft before you hand in the final copy.

Overview
For this assignment, you will choose a popular culture example you want to analyze using ideological approaches learned in class. This can be a television/streaming program, a podcast, film, or game. You will write your second paper on the same example, if possible.
Purpose
The goal of the exercise is for you to consider how a particular media example plays a role in broader social constructions and ideas. This paper gives you the opportunity to use media analysis on a cultural example that interests you. In the process, you will apply critical and analytical thinking and explore the ethical impact of popular culture.
Length:
35 pages, double spaced, 1-inch margins
Sources:
Required: At least one scholarly reading from Unit 1 (journal article or scholarly book chaptergenerally not urls).

Using information about Ideology and meaning (Nealon, Applequist, Castleberry, Hall) reflect on the following:
How does my chosen text utilize hegemony and/or counter-hegemony? Or, do an encoding/decoding analysis. Either way, make sure to do the following:
Describe the program, including the basic premise and details that are critical to your analysis (such as character, language, setting)
Illustrate how the program/film operates ideologically using details that function hegemonically or that are encoded.
See Castleberry or Applequist for models, but do your own explanatory work (i.e., dont define the theory by simply quoting).
Your paper must include:
A clearly articulated thesis statement
An introduction in which you establish your major lines of argument regarding the role the film or TV show plays within the larger structure of the media industry and the approach that you have chosen to analyze the text (hegemony/counter-hegemony or encoding/decoding).
A body that expands upon and provides arguments and evidence to support your thesis (see below):
Clearly define and explain the theoretical approach you are using
Draw on the theoretical approach to analyze the media text of your choice. Use the above questions under each option to hone your analysis.
Support your claims with details and illustrations that relate to your media text
Utilize the concepts provided in course readings and discussions to support your arguments and analyses
A brief conclusion in which you point to the political stakes and implications of your argument.

Can We Let the Market Take Care of Its Own Problems?
Markets have generally been much better (more accurate, more timely, more proactive) in assessing and addressing risks than the regulators. However, there have been colossal failures by the markets to avoid the cliff, as we have witnessed many times in recent years.
If market equilibrium is based on there being a fair risk-reward trade-off, will well-intentioned regulation – like Basel III or Dodd-Frank – do more harm than good?
Is it clear that letting Lehman fail – with 20/20 hindsight – was a terrible mistake? Maybe it instilled a greater degree of vigilance and prudence, that was sorely lacking in the wild bubble days preceding the crisis?
We all shudder at the sights and sounds of raging forest fires, volcanic eruptions, and the like. Most of the time, the environment responds – albeit with pain and long time-lapses – and comes back stronger.
Response to above, make your own opinion. You may include 1 or 2 citations.
The objective of this assignment is to allow you to apply course material to real-world situations after conducting an interview with an organizational manager or leader. The assignment is as follows:
1. Select a person who is in a leadership or management position. Ideally, you would speak to this person several times during the course of the semester. But, if you only conduct one interview, make sure that you have enough time to discuss issues at the appropriate depth and to ask follow up questions.
2. Your objective is to gain a better understanding of his/her approach for handling common managerial problems/issues. Design your interview questions to touch on at least 10 different concepts related to the course (e.g., motivation issues, selection and retention efforts, stress management, equity concerns, dealing with problem employees, performance appraisal issues, dealing with generational differences, managing the opportunities and challenges associated with diversity, general career advice, and so on) . Be prepared to act as a reporter. Ask open-ended questions and ask follow-up questions as needed. If your initial question draws a complete and compelling answer, then great. However, if your question draws a relatively short response, then ask follow-up questions that allow you to more fully understand the issue. Do what you can to draw out interesting and informative responses.
3. Avoid asking theory-specific questions such as How do you try to increase employee instrumentality within the expectancy theory model of motivation and, instead, ask general questions about motivational practices like What, specifically, are some of the practices that you use to enhance employee motivation?. The person you are interviewing does not need to know course-specific theories. Instead, it is your job to later examine his/her answers through the lens of course concepts when you reflect on the interview.
4. Your report should contain the following sections:
A) Brief Introduction – Describe the person you interviewed (name of individual, job title, organization, number of employees that he/she supervises, your connection to the individual, etc.).
B) Q & A Entries (a minimum of 10) – Each entry should include: a) the question asked and b) the response given.
C) In-Depth Analysis Select 1 response to analyze in depth. In your in-depth analysis, please use course concepts, critical thinking, and your own experiences to critique the managers responses to the selected question. In terms of the specific issue in question, what is the manager doing well and/or what could he/she do better? Especially if the managers approach is inconsistent with course concepts, discuss why the inconsistency occurs, the potential problems that this could lead to, and/or why the inconsistency makes sense within this particular organization (in contrast to the general principles discussed in the course). Again, use both course concepts and your own critical thinking skills to examine the effectiveness of the managers approach. (Hint – You are likely to interview someone that you respect and someone that you think is performing well. But, we all have areas in which we can improve. For you in-depth analysis, make sure to focus on an aspect of his/her approach that has room for improvement.)
D) Recommendations – At the end of the analysis develop a set of specific recommendations that you think the manager or organization should implement moving forward. It is fine to note the things that should be continued, but also note things that should be changed. Also, make sure to discuss the potential costs and benefits of your recommendations. Could your recommendations be implemented in a cost-effective and time-effective manner?
5. In terms of grading this assignment, the sections containing your analyses and recommendations are the most important. So, please do a thorough job on those aspects. The in-depth analysis section should be at least 1 full page single-spaced or 2 full pages double-spaced). You should discuss both things the manager is doing well and things that could be improved. In all cases, though, you need to explain why the managers approach is either effective or ineffective and, even if things are going well, you should certainly touch on areas that could be improved in your recommendations.
6) This assignment is worth 30 points and will be graded as follows (which assumes all required elements are included):
Organization and Clarity (well organized, easy to follow, thoughtful presentation) 5 points
Writing Quality (grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, level of detail) 5 points
Analyses (appropriate use of course material, thoughtful analysis, thorough critique) 15 points
Recommendations (logical, well-supported, tied to analysis, cost-benefit assessment) 5 points
Total 30 points
