INSTRUCTIONS:

Writers can decide whether they wanted to do a formal analysis, historical/contextual analysis, or an Iconographic Analysis. Please let me know if you need any extra resources to finish this up.

Artist for the topic: Marina Abramovi

Please follow the instruction below for objectives, guidelines, and citation requirements.

Objective:

To delve deeper into the life and work of one performance artist, so as to make original, insightful connections between the artists life/biography and the performance art they create. This is a creative and critical writing assignment, not a school book-report, so avoid a simple list of activities and achievements by the artist. We want a perceptive piece of writing, a cross between an art critic and a therapist, making new and astute observations about the artists issues, inspirations, and contributions.

Guidelines:

1. While you certainly want to give us an overview of their entire body of work, focus on ONE performance that is central in their career for an extended discussion;

2. You must be able to watch video documentation of the performance;

3. To help you organize your thoughts, you can use a typical art historical framework for
analysis. Distinguish between but include these 3 types of analyses:

a. Iconographic Analysis: The content. The actions, gestures, images, symbols, speech, text, etc. that indicate the subject matter, tone, message and meaning of the performance.

b. Formal Analysis: The form. The way the performance is crafted and structured (duration, sequence, movement, props and technology used, color and lighting; performance art techniques like layering, juxtaposition, simultaneity, etc. and traditional performing arts used, i.e. acting, dancing, music.)

c. Historical/Contextual Analysis: When was this performance created (specific year), where, and how does it reflect the times in which it was made?

Required Resources and Cited References:

Your essay should have the following mix of resources, at a bare minimum:
a. 2 Internet articles, essays, dissertations (Search Google Scholar as well, for articles from JStor, etc.)

b. 2 articles specifically from an art or performance magazine, from the library or online. (PAJPerformance Art Journal, Performance Art Magazine, High Performance, BOMB, Performa, etc.)

c. 2 Internet videos (Vimeo, YouTube, etc.)

d. 2 REAL BOOKS from the library, or through an inter-library loan (or buy used on
Amazon!) that deal with your artist. It can be an ebook but it has to be published.

Out-groups: Impact & Inclusion Strategies

Out-groups are not uncommon, particularly when a group comes together to accomplish a task or resolve a problem.  Think about it, eight co-workers are planning to go out for dinner. Six want Mexican food and the remaining 2 want Italian. The latter two opt out and do not go to dinner. This could be a red flag signaling the formation of an out-group.

Out-group refers to individuals who feel they are not part of the larger group; they are a subset-somewhat disconnected. Out-groups form for a variety of reasons and their members can feel disconnected, unaccepted, discriminated against, powerless or ineffective.  The existence out-groups is not a good thing for either the members of the out-group or the members of the larger main group.

Out-groups are a major concern for leaders as their presence indicates the team is not operating at full capacity. Group cohesiveness and synergy are impacted. Effective leaders anticipate the potential for out-groups, look for their development and employ specific strategies to re-engage these individuals with the larger group.

Part 1:  For this week’s Threaded Discussion, describe a situation you are familiar with which included an out-group. This can be from a work, school, or social organization. Provide a snap shot description of the larger group. Describe the out-group, discuss why this group has formed and what has been their impact.

Class -Please view the above video – Mindset of Success – Cheri Tree at Harvard

It is longer then our usual video (37 minutes) and I think you will enjoy. It explains the importance of sales, the personality types as it affects you and understanding business. You probably at some point in your academic career  studied personality types, but she does a great job summarizing it’s importance.

Your overall thoughts on the video?

What stood out?

Please list and give at least 2 examples of concepts she has mentioned and how it can or has effected you, someone you know personally, or a public figure.

Do you think it is OK to stereotype personality types into these 4 categories?  Why or Why not?

Write one page (12 point times new roman, double spaced, one inch margins, citing sources within the text, also provide the link of the websites please) describing the financial and economic crisis over the last 30 years in Rwanda.  What caused them?  Were there crises in neighboring countries that impacted Rwanda?

(I uploaded the note of developing counties crisis over past years and also the previous assignment: “Trends in balance of payments in Rwanda” for information and citation format references, but the graph is not necessary)

Robert Putnam, in his book Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, uses the example of the decline of bowling leagues across the country to suggest the passing of community and associations in the United States. Traditionally these associations provided the social capital* upon which society was built.

Has social media exacerbated this loss of community and neighborhood associations or has it enhanced community building? Many argue that electronic communication lacks the tactile and personal nature of face to face contact necessary for true communities. Others respond that online communication permits a much broader understanding of community, with connection across a heretofore impossible expanse of culture and geography.

Using real-world examples, please compose an essay discussing the impact of the new world of digital communication on community-building in America.

Your essay should use MLA formatting and demonstrate college-level grammar, spelling and vocabulary.

*Social capital: A network of personal relationships that provide social glue.

Please see the attached article on “How Social Capital Helps Communities Weather the COVID-19 Storm” for an example of how important social capital might be, according to one study.

The purpose of the research paper is to provide you, the student, with an opportunity to explore an area of sociology in greater depth. Your first step is to locate a resource on a topic you are interested in learning more about. Please review the Signature Assignment requirements in Canvas. For your Module 1 assignment, paste the following questions into a Word document to complete.

1.    Find an academic article from the Carrington Library or Google Scholar that discusses your topic choice. Provide an APA citation of that article.

Beyond Clinical Complexity: Nonmedical Barriers to Nursing Home Care for Rural Residents, Authors: Henning-Smith, Carrie1,Kozhimannil, Katy B.1Casey, Michelle M.1Prasad, Shailendra1,2Source:Journal of Aging & Social Policy. Mar/Apr2018, Vol. 30 Issue 2, p109-126. 18p. 1 Chart. Document Type: Article

2.    Identify your topic.

I chose to write about discharge planning barriers for the rural and homeless population.  I personally have experience in this area as a case manager.

3.    Why did you choose this topic?
I chose this topic because I have personally encountered many barriers to discharge planning with the rural and homeless population.

4.    Briefly discuss the connection between your sociological topic and your field of work.
I work in case management and discharge planning.  When a rural resident or homeless person require skilled nursing care and case management, these two populations encounter many of the same barriers for very different reasons.

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE SO FAR, NOT MUCH.  NEEDS TO BE TURNED INTO AN ESSAY

In this final essay, you are given an opportunity to apply what youve learned thus far about beliefs, perspectives, and deductive reasoning. Please read the Topic to get an understanding of the Traditional & Popular Beliefs about Interracial Relationships that you will be comparing & contrasting.
I. Topic
In David Muras Reflections of My Daughter, he discusses the appearance of self-hate represented in his choice of marrying a white woman. When recalling a poem he wrote entitled The Color of Desire he said, at one point, the poem asks this question: Father, mother, / I married a woman not of my color. / What is it I want to escape?
Traditional Belief Men of color who marry outside of their race want to escape from their culture, values and/or themselves.
Popular Culture Belief Men of color who marry outside of their race dont want to escape from their culture, values and/or themselves, instead they are driven by love.
II. Prompt
You are being asked to write a comparative essay that will investigate the Traditional and Popular Cultural Belief from the topic above for the people of color that you decide to explore. You can change the gender & ethnicity of the subjects, e.g. you can choose to explore how these beliefs apply to Asian women. You are to research both the Traditional and Popular Cultural Beliefs and based on the facts you discover from that research develop your perspective.
I want you to adopt an active perspective about the idea of escape vs. love driving people of color into interracial relationships. This is to say, when writing your paper,

please share with me how your new perspective will impact your life. Will it affect how you watch movies? Will it affect who you date? Will it affect how you raise your children? Your thesis should be a question that guides you towards your perspective.
Your thesis will dictate how you organize your paper. A good essay will reflect substantial research and a strong roadmap also known as an outline. These three basic building blocks, i.e. thesis, research and roadmap are the key to developing an essay that effectively communicates your perspective.
III. Key Terms
Compare & Contrast This is a comparative Essay! Be sure to compare and contrast the Traditional Belief to the Popular Cultural Belief within your paper.
Theme/Topic Clearly share your understanding of both the Traditional and Popular Cultural Beliefs for your chosen topic in your introductory paragraph, i.e. show that you comprehend the theme(s) presented in the topic that you choose.
Thesis – You are tasked with proposing a thesis that guides you to develop a perspective on the belief presented in your topic. Your thesis should also be included in your introductory paragraph. And this thesis should guide you towards both your perspective and the way that you envision applying your perspective, e.g. if you are considering interracial dating, then developing a perspective could guide you in your decision.
Roadmap – Your introductory paragraph should present the roadmap that you will follow to transition the belief presented in your paper into your perspective on the topic.
Research – When developing your perspective, please remember to apply deductive reasoning through research and examination of the facts, rather than inductive reasoning.
Active Perspective – In the end, the outcome of your research and examination of both the Traditional Belief and the Popular Culture Belief will lead you to a perspective that you can apply to your life in some way.
Conclusion – Ultimately, you must articulate your newly developed perspective. While researching for this paper, you may find that your perspective is in sync with the Traditional Belief or perhaps your perspective is more in agreement with the Popular Cultural Belief. It is entirely possible to have developed an alternative perspective on your topic. Either way remember that you must articulate what you plan on doing with your new perspective, i.e. how will it impact your life.
