6. Are Feeding Tubes Morally Obligatory? By D. Sulmasy, c. 1996 St. Anthony Messenger/AmericanCatholic.org (see attached)

Mrs. Jaansen is a Roman Catholic Christian 58 year old school teacher. Six weeks ago she suffered a stroke that left her with severe deficits. Her doctor told her family that, because of her injury, she will be unable to walk on her own, feed herself or be independent from full assistance for the remainder of her life. She remains in the hospital and has not communicated with her family in any way since the stroke. She is breathing on her own but will most likely experience unpredictable bouts of respiratory distress for the rest of her life, requiring future mechanical ventilation. She is receiving nutrients through a feeding tube, which was surgically inserted in her stomach. Her husband wants the doctor to remove the feeding tube and permit the effects of the stroke to take their natural course. He is sure that this is what his wife would want, especially in light of the grim diagnosis. He knows this not only from what she has told him in the past, but also because of her free and independent character. He believes that she would not want to live like this. The doctor is not comfortable removing the feeding tube because she believes it to be necessary to sustain life.

Questions to consider in the case study:

Do you think the husband’s request is reasonable?

What do you think about the doctor’s response?

If you were the husband how would your proceed?

Do you think you can remove the feeding tube and still honor the sanctity of the patient’s life?

What can you find in the teaching of the Catholic Church to help inform the patients caregivers so that they can decide on a course of action?

Submit Term Paper in Turnitin Here. Remember to include both reference and intext citations and follow the APA guidelines to format paper. Select three topics of your choice and reflect on what you learned in the course. Remember to apply concepts from the course material and from two outside sources. Students are also required to develop a list of three topics that you found difficult to comprehend and explain why. The term paper must be written using the APA guidelines. Both references and in-text citations must be APA format. This paper should be in MS WORD, double-spaced, Arial or Calibri font, between 4 to 5 pages in length.

1. Choose a current policy challenge in public budgeting. Pick a topic that concerns budgeting issues at the national, state, or local level.  You may write about a budgeting challenge that we addressed in class, but be warned: your memo should go beyond the class discussion for that topic. If you are not sure whether your topic is appropriate, feel free to run it by me via email or during office hours.
2. Explain the budgeting challenge and why it is important. Provide at least some background on the issue to help the reader (me) follow your argument. Make the case that this issue is important enough to warrant some action, even with all the other fiscal problems currently out there.
3. Provide concrete advice to a senior policymaker on how to meet this challenge. Address your memo to a specific senior policymaker in a government organization. Provide 2-3 policy options for meeting the challenge your memo describes, and make the case for your one preferred option. Only propose options that are feasible or reasonable (i.e., dont suggest entirely eliminating Social Security or doubling the federal income tax).
I am looking for your own critical analysis of the policy issue, but using arguments and theories of other scholars is a useful starting point. Make sure that you clearly take a position on the best response to this policy issue. On the other hand, you must do more than just provide your opinion! Use facts and findings to support your analysis and conclusions. Spend time thinking about how best to organize your paper. Write clearly and concisely and make sure you proofread. Make sure you are clear in your analysis and policy recommendation.
The policy memo should be 3-5 pages of double-spaced text (not including the bibliography), using a standard 12-point font and 1-inch margins. You can use whatever citation style you prefer, but you must cite your sources.

The research paper needs to be 10 pages in length and there needs to be and outline for the research paper as well. The directions for the outline will be attached in the files. Regarding the research paper you may only use the sources from the annotated bibliography which will also be attached in the files. The paper needs to be in MLA format. It can be double spaced. Here is the subject as well as the stance you will need to take on the the topic.
Subject: Death Penalty- Should it be allowed?

Occasion: The death penalty is an ongoing issue in America. Some states allow it while others do not. Should the decision be left up to the states?

Stakes and stakeholder: No one should have the authority to take someone’s life, regardless of what they have done, even murder. It is the classic two wrongs do not make a right that Americans have forgotten. The massive amount of power ending a life puts in the government’s hands is scary to think about. Especially how many death-row cases have been false convictions.

Path of inquiry: How much power is too much power for the government? Should there be federal mandates for these types of issues? How many death-row cases have been overturned?

Working thesis:  The death row penalty is becoming an increasingly problematic topic amongst citizens. It is the debate of whether or not we should have the power to take a human’s life.

The difficulties: It will be difficult to keep my paper from straying too far away from the topic. It will also be troublesome to find different sources that are not too biased towards one ideal or the other. The counter-argument against me is pretty strong but not too bad.

Well, well, well…it all comes down to this…the last item, in the last module, in the last week, of this ridiculous PCC course you got yourself into, alllllllll those weeks ago.  And yeah, it was a pain, but you actually got out of doing one additional essay you should have done….

Spaceballs quotes MOVIE QUOTES

(If you know the reference above, thumbs up to you!  If you don’t, well…it’s this page contains the last batch of obscure Cortina pop culture references you’ll have to endure, so celebrate or mourn that, as per your philosophical bent.)

If you’re here on this page, I assume you are pretty much ready to submit your final “exam” essay, but just for the sake of argument, once again here are the instructions for writing the GMO OMG essay.  Additionally, it is impossible to respond to the essay assignment without understanding and discussing the concepts of ethos, pathos, and logos in arguments.  So, once again, just in case, here is a link to the page within this module that discusses those concepts.  Additionally, if you look through the other pages in this week’s module, you will find I have placed duplicate copies of earlier pages from the course into the module so you can refresh your memory on things like thesis statements, prewriting, citations, works cited pages, being vivid and descriptive, and so on.  Browse this week’s module for any of those pages that may come in handy to you.

Berlin 2013 EXCLUSIVE: Watch the Trailer for Jeremy Seiferts Food Industry Doc GMO OMG …

Okay…if you are ready to turn in the final “exam” essay, please take one last look at the various tips and guidelines I have within the document of instructions, and additionally look through the essay itself for various things:

Did you proofread it for grammatical smoothness, clarity, and correctness?
Did you check the document of instructions’ suggestions and tips at the end of the document?
Does your paper discuss logos, pathos, and ethos within GMO OMG, and make a critique of the film as an argument, and does your paper make its own argument on some aspect of the GMO controversy?
Did you cite all your sources in the paper itself via MLA style, and on a works cited page?
Were you descriptive, vivid, and specific in detail/description where appropriate?
Does the paper give adequate background to the reader so that they understand sources?
Does your paper fulfill the length requirement or exceed it?
Do you dare eat a peach?  (anyone know the reference?  It’s not really a pop culture reference this time..had to sneak one more allusion in, though)
Is the essay as good as you can make it, and are you aware this bad boy is worth a whopping 120 points?

If you feel okay about all those questions, then it’s probably time to upload this paper and get it off your back once and for all, and be done with Cortina’s stupidity once and for all.  Upload that file…get that “SUBMIT” button there on your screen…know that with a single push it will all be over…

Once youve chosen the source, analyze and evaluate it using criteria you have chosen from the list on page 380 in Rules, the box titled Determining if a source is scholarly.  Choose the criteria which you think will be the most effective in evaluating the source youve chosen for a general college-educated audience.  If youve chosen to evaluate the credentials of the author(s) of a source, for instance, you may need to do additional research. You must use at least four criteria in the essay.

The ultimate purpose of the essay will be to persuade your readers why the source you have evaluated is or is not an appropriate source of research for a college student like you. You will determine this based upon your analysis of how the source meets or doesn’t meet the criteria youve chosen.

Secondary Sources
For the secondary source(s) cited in your essay, you must include copies of the page(s) from which the cited material was taken or a link to the source on the Works Cited page. Note that this requirement does not include our Rules text.  If you have trouble finding a source, you should speak to me.  Failure to use a database source or provide copies of or links to all sources will result in an evaluation of no better than a 70.

Specific Directions
Each of the following elements should be included in your essay:

1.    An introduction paragraph that gains the readers attention, states the essays main idea, and includes a clear statement of purpose. Consider referring to the video Five Components of Information Literacy, which you also may access through the course Blackboard site.

2.    A body paragraph discussing how the database source relates to your program, or academic/career goals.  Why did you choose it, for example?  Why do you think it is or will be an important topic or issue in your field in the future?

3.    A thorough summary of the source youve chosen to evaluate.

4.    A body paragraph (or more) that includes a description of each criterion youll use to evaluate the sourceincluding why you believe each one is important. These criteria must come from the box titled Determining if a source is scholarly on page 380 of Rules.  Additionally, the source of the explanations of the criteria must be documented.  These explanations are provided in the document titled Understanding Criteria for Evaluating Scholarly Sources. A minimum of four criteria is required.

5.    A discussion/evaluation of how the source meets (or doesnt meet) each criterion, which offers specific examples from the source being discussed, in the form of quotations, summaries, or paraphrases.

6.    A conclusion paragraph that summarizes the key positives and deficiencies of the source and effectively persuades the reader that the source is or is not appropriate for an academic essay.

Criteria for Evaluation
Beyond the list of criteria for successful English 201 essays listed in your syllabus, Ill be evaluating the second draft of the essay based on my answers to the following questions:

Does the introduction paragraph catch the readers interest by using a question, a reason people feel the topic is interesting or important, and introduce the concept of information literacy?

Do the topic, main idea (thesis), and a clear statement of purpose appear in the first paragraph?  Does the essay demonstrate an awareness of its intended audience?

Is the essay organized logically, following the sequence described above?

Are the criteria defined and explained clearly?  Are a minimum of four criteria used?  Is the source of the criteria cited appropriately?

Is the full-text database source clearly summarized and evaluated, using specific examples so the reader understands the evaluation without having to read the source?

Does the writer effectively persuade the reader in the conclusion paragraph that the source is or is not appropriate for an academic essay?

Does the essay use MLA documentation appropriately for all the sources used, including any supplementary sources about the author(s)?

Audience
Write the essay as though it were being read by a general college-educated audience. In other words, think like a college writer.  Write to an educated reader who is not familiar with what we’re reading or discussing in this course.

Length
The second draft should be a minimum of three double-spaced typed pages, using Times New Roman 12-point font and one-inch margins.  This requirement does not include the Works Cited page.

Format
The essay should be presented using MLA Documentation style.  This includes general formatting as well as in-text citations and a Works Cited page.  Use the model essay that begins on page 527 of Rules (minus the visual) as a guide.
