The Brundtland Report

The Brundtland Report is referenced in many sources throughout the class textbook and throughout larger, worldwide conversations about sustainability.  In some ways it is considered the primary text used to define and address sustainability.

Why do you think this is such an important text in the history of sustainability?  What factors led to this report being recognized as a landmark document on sustainability?  In what ways does this report define the term?  In what ways do you agree or disagree with the definition, perspective, or examples of sustainability that are established in the Brundtland report?

DECISION MAKING INSTRUCTIONS
Successful managerial decision-making is often complex, because managers attempt to analyze options and make determinations to select the best course of action in response to opportunities and threats. In this assignment, students will examine different ways to make decisions that will optimize organizational performance.
Remember: This assignment and all assignments in this course have a management, not leadership focus. There is a distinct difference between management and leadership. Discuss management, not leadership. The Contemporary Management text only provides basic topical information. Give your opinion in the form of new insights that you gained about this topic, demonstrating a synthesis of biblical principles and secular knowledge. Some suggested (not required) questions for reflection: What would Jesus do to solve the problem? What are some biblical examples of applying the decision technique that you have chosen? Java Market Receipts project

The solution of the problem includes modeling and realization of the process of issuing
cash receipts in the store. It is necessary to create classes that store and
manipulate information about: store; cashier in a store; goods in a store; cash register in a store;
a receipt that is issued to the customer.
1. Cashier class – stores information about the identification number and name of the cashier;
2. Class Goods to be sold in a store – stores identification number, name,
unit price of the goods and expiration date;
3. Class Cashier in a store – stores information about which cashier is currently working
this safe. At the checkout, customers in the store pay for the purchased goods and receive
receipt. 4. Class The receipt must contain at least the following information: sequential
number, cashier who issues the receipt, date and time of issuance of the receipt
a note, a list of goods to be included in the receipt including the price and
their quantity. It is necessary to keep the total number of issued cash registers
notes to date and the total amount generated as turnover at issue.
When issuing the receipt, it is necessary to display its contents
and save to file. Each receipt must be kept in a separate name file
of the file, which should contain the serial number of the issued receipt.
You have to be able to check how many cash receipts are issued at the moment. The information
it must be legible in the file in which the receipt is saved. 5. Class Store – stores information about a list of goods sold in
the store, a list of cashiers who work in the store and the number of issued cash registers
notes. Goods must be delivered to the store, which will then be sold.
It must be possible to sell goods if there is enough available
quantity of it in the store. It must be possible to check at any time
what is the total turnover of the store at the moment.

Realization requirements:
1. When selling goods, check that there is a sufficient quantity of
her. If the quantity is not enough to throw an exception. The exception is yes
indicates from which product what quantity is not enough to make the purchase.
2. In the store all cash registers work in parallel. To carry out the work of the cash registers in

Choose one of the topics below to write about:

-Few people could live together and not have laws. Why? Consider the concept of pluralism. Does pluralism have any negative aspects? Why have some fought so hard against the concept in the United States? Consider present examples and discussion surrounding the idea of pluralism and how this may or may not be connected to the current discussion on immigration.

-Could a country such as the United States function without a federal constitution? Would it be possible for each state to merely abide by its own constitution? Why shouldn’t the US Constitution include an overall criminal code specifying crimes and punishments that could apply [universally] throughout the US? Can you think of current tensions between states’ rights and the federal government (e.g., gun laws, physician assisted suicide, legalization of marijuana, etc.) Discuss.

-Should any one court be given the final say? Why or why not? Is there a negative side to appointment for life on the Court? Does this and the inability to lessen a justice’s salary really prevent influencing a Supreme Court justice? Do you think that the Supreme Court is a de facto lawmaker? What about split decisions? Considering many Supreme Court decisions are decided 5 to 4, is it reasonable to have the law of the land determined by 5 people?

-As discussed previously, can you think of current tensions between states’ rights and the federal government? Discuss. Do you believe that this influences your daily life? Imagine a system in which the federal government determined all laws across the land. One in which there was no local or state-level jurisdiction fluctuation. What would it look like?

-Explain at what point a person is considered “under arrest.” Explain the difference between a stop and an arrest. Why might states authorize probable cause arrests for certain unwitnessed misdemeanors? How much force can be used by an officer when executing an arrest? How is it determined? Can you think of any times when you heard about “excessive use of force” and if so, how do you think the actions of a few influenced the perceptions of many regarding the police?

-Considering the USA Patriot Act, do you think Americans could ever sacrifice too many rights in exchange for national security? What does the Patriot Act allow the government to do that might give you pause concerning your privacy? Do you believe that most people know what is in the Patriot Act concerning their individual liberties? If you decided to protest the government anyway, do you think some of these concerns over the Patriot Act’s reach could impact you?

Grading will be tied to comprehension, depth, source reliance, APA, grammar, spelling, completeness and scope.
