Introduction:
Sociologists understand that in order to gain a more complete picture of a social issue you have to talk to people on the ground. For this assignment, Id like you to interview a health care professional, of some kind, about their experiences in health care. Ive listed a few questions Id like you to ask below, but you are welcome to ask additional questions.
Your interviewee should have at least one year of experience working in their field. If you are not sure whether the person you have in mind constitutes a health care professional feel free to ask me! You should do the interview face-to-face, if possible, but over the phone or Skype (or other video calling program) is okay too.
It is important to protect the identity of your respondent. You can come up with a pseudonym or use a code. Do not include any identifying information in your transcript or reflection.
Directions:
There are three parts to this assignment.
The interview
The transcript
The reflection
The Interview
For the interview portion of the assignment ask your interviewee the following questions:
How has your field changed in recent years?
How is it different today than when you started (if they havent been in the field very long, you can ask how its different than they thought it would be)
What do you see as the biggest issues in health care delivery today?
What are the biggest challenges in your profession?
You can ask other questions, but be sure to address these since they will be the focus of your reflection
The Transcript
Submit a transcript of the interview:
In the transcript, include the questions you asked and your interviewees responses.
Use a format similar to this:
Interviewer: How has your field changed in recent years?
Respondent: Theres a nursing shortage now so.
It does not need to be word-for-word, but if you are able to record it and transcribe from the recording, that is great! Make sure to ask permission before recording!
The Reflection
For the reflection do the following:
Discuss the profession of your respondent
Provide a summary of the interview experience
Reflect on their responses to the changes in the field, the biggest issues in health care delivery, and the challenges in their profession.
TITLE OF BILL:

on school property
PURPOSE:
This bill defines and prohibits the bullying of students and others on
school property, both conventional and cyberbullying.
Does empirical research in psychology indicate that this law will be helpful or harmful? Your thesis statement will indicate whether you recommend that legislators vote to approve or reject the pending law.
In your paper, you will need to identify at least three empirical articles (original sources) you will use to support your thesis. You will likely have more than three citations in your paper. You can cite the textbook, but (because it is a secondary source) the textbook will not count towards your three required citations. You will need to support your thesis statement using research, not just your opinion! Your paper should clearly:
1) Describe the pending legislation and your thesis statement. (approximately 1 page)
2) The bulk of the paper should support your thesis statement. Why do you recommend that legislators support or reject this law? Use the sources to support your reasoning. Provide a critical analysis of your three relevant sources and explain why they support your recommendation to support or condemn the pending law. For each of the empirical articles, describe the research question tested by the research, describe how the authors tested that question and what they found, the strengths and limitations of their findings, and relate their findings to your thesis statement. Your analysis should be critical. Note the strengths and weaknesses both in the study itself and in its relevance to the case in question. (approximately 3 pages)
3) Analyze the impact of the law on the basis of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, immigration status, ability status, or culture. Has the law disproportionately impacted those of particular races? classes? Does the law protect all marginalized communities? Who does it leave out and why? How might we begin to reconcile this? Your paper must include the impact of the law on at least two groups that are not addressed within the law (e.g., if you consider the Violence Against Women Act then you can possibly consider whether there will be a differential impact on those with varied immigration status and race but gender is already directly addressed by the law and should already be considered in your paper). (approximately 1 page)
4) Include a reference section with the pending legislation on which you based your assignment, the three original sources you selected, along with any other sources you used to complete your assignment.
Your assignment must follow APA formatting including:
1) Size 12 font, preferably Times New Roman
2) Double-spacing
3) Page numbers on top right (header)
4) 1 margins on all four sides (you may have to adjust the default settings)
5) Title page including title of paper, your name, affiliation (college) and course 6) No abstract is necessary for this assignment

1. Laurenti Magesa, African Religion – The Moral Traditions of Abundant Life. 1997. Maryknoll, N.Y., Orbis Books.
Magesa: Chapter 2: pages 36-57..you will be required to submit a typed one page summary of the reading for the week or reflection on assigned documentary/video. This should include a minimum 150 words summary of the reading selection and another 250 words of your thoughts/understanding of the issue(s) discussed. Be sure to include some ideas from class lectures and discussions as evidence of your mastery of the topic for the week.
For this assignment, you are going to practice writing a paper that makes a persuasive argument about a debatable topic. Your goal is twofold: present an opinion informed by scholarly research and persuade your reader that your opinion is correct.
Before you put the first word down on the page for this assignment, you will already have a significant challenge ahead of you: you will need to examine a matter of opinion in an analytical way. We often hold ideas and opinions which might be informed by incomplete or inaccurate information. Research helps us to make sure that we are doing our best to ensure that the arguments we make are backed by credible information. You need to be confident that your opinion is informed by credible information, so once you select your topic, you will need to do some research on the issue.
The topic that you choose is entirely up to you. Your sources for this essay must come from the Siena Heights University library databases.
Do not panic. Below my explanation video are three videos from one of our amazing librarians that will show you how to access the library and how to use a few of the databases. Keep in mind, there are more databases than what is shown here. However, these two videos are a great place to start.
This is a research paper, so you must appropriately cite your work. However, keep in mind that this is still a persuasive paper based on information you have read, not an informative essay nor is it a presentation of what someone else thinks. The research that you do is supporting your position. Do not simply regurgitate what some pundit had to say. You can paraphrase, summarize and if necessary even quote that person, but this paper is about you and what you think about the topic at hand.
Remember, you are trying to win an argument and persuade someone to agree with you based on scholarly facts. This is not just an emotional argument over which team you love most. Emotions might be the cause for you to feel the way you do, but this paper is about finding data to support the position.
The parameters are:
This paper may be in first person.
The paper must follow APA format as explained in the APA Basics video.
It must be well supported.
The sources must come from the SHU library databases.
No more than 10% of your paper may be direct quotes.
It must be 4-6 pages long.
A full page is 3/4 of a page.
It must be grammatically correct.
Remember, review the APA Basics video. You will be held accountable for the information presented there. If you have any questions about any part of this assignment, please let me know and ask early.
