Sociology final reflection paper
PAPER: THE REMEMBRANCE PROJECT

You will write a 2-3 page reflection as the final for this course, thus, 20% of your grade in this course depends on the precision, depth, and creativity demonstrated in this paper. Having dived into the study of society and discussed differences across hundreds of variables, the time has come to think about the one variable which is incontrovertible across time and space death.

Every person who has ever lived has had to contend with the facts of existence and no fact is more immutable than all who live will eventually pass away. The existential angst induced by such realizations often follows on the heels of a close friend or loved one passing away. Of course, just because all people pass away doesnt mean they agree on what constitutes a life well lived. It is my hope that all of you will live a life that you can consider to be well-lived whatever that means to you personally.

I think part of living such a life stems from having thought about what we value about ourselves and others, what we are most proud of and ashamed of, and what we hope our legacy will be after we are gone. To facilitate such thinking, I have created this journal exercise based on two thought experiences. All I ask is you sit there and think deeply about each experiment for a few minutes and then commit yourself to writing no less than one page about each one.

Thought Experiment #1:
Imagine that one of your close friends is talking to one of their friends, someone who knows nothing about you and who has never met you before. Having never encountered you before, this friend of your friend has no idea what you look like, what your voice sounds like, how you dress, what your beliefs are etc. How would you WANT your friend to describe you to their friend?

Thought Experiment #2:
Imagine that you lived to be 90 years old and passed away while you were sleeping. One hundred years after you die, a researcher begins writing a biography about your life. What would the researcher need to emphasize for you to feel like the biography did a good job of capturing your life?

Again, please read the thought experiments carefully and think about them for several minutes before starting to write. You need only include half a page for each experiment, although you are certainly welcome to write as much as you want. The paper is due December 6.

Environmental justice ensures that all communities are treated fairly and are meaningfully involved in environmental-based decisions, such as where to build a new sanitary landfill, hazardous waste repository, industrial plant, or any other such site that could create an environmental hazard for those who live in the area.

Describe a time when environmental injustice occurred. This can include any current or past events where the community was not fairly and meaningfully involved in the decision-making process.

Who is or was negatively affected? What negative health effects could or did the community experience? What other social factors compound the negative health outcomes of the community?

For the Unit 6 Discussion, address the following questions:

Describe a time when you encountered a hazard in the workplace that could have caused or did cause an injury. This could be a single incident or repetitive motion issue.
Why did the hazard exist? Was the business negligent in providing proper protection or training for their employees, or was the employee not following workplace rules, protocols, training, etc.?
Discuss the occupational organizations (governmental and/or non-governmental) that might be involved when investigating the workplace injury.
What laws, regulations, policies and/or programs in place to prevent this type of injury?

Final paper

The final project is a point/counter-point presentation.  You will need to provide a substantive point and counterpoint (pro and con for the issue) argument regarding a legal or ethical issue in health care that impacts the nursing profession. The final position the student takes on the issue should be strongly defended, concise, and clearly articulated. Key elements of the legal or ethical issue are identified. To support the argument, the student will provide a substantive example. This can be a legal case, a case from the media, or a clinical scenario. Any topic from the course may be used. This project requires APA formatting and requires at least 4 references.

The paper will analyze an ethical issue (chosen by the student) in nursing and will provide the student with the opportunity to support their argument. The paper will be written in APA format and require at least 4 references and be approximately 3 pages of full contents.

***Please make sure that you provide both sides of the issues (pro and con) to provide a detailed evaluation of both sides of the topic. Then a final position the student takes on the issue should be strongly defended, concise, and clearly articulated. This is a tactic utilized in preparing and presenting legal cases, and learning to see both sides of an ethical or legal issue is a valuable skill.  Please follow the rubric.

I don’t have anything in mind, I would like to know your thoughts around the topic you are choosing before you write about it.

This assignment is an academic essay in which you will choose either one media outlet, one journalistic beat or one specific journalist or group of journalists. Your piece will chronicle the challenges and opportunities of your chosen object of study in the context of the digital age. As we have seen this term, the effect the internet has had on journalism cannot be overstated, be it in the business of journalism; the different forms it takes; the breakdown in traditional hierarchies of knowledge; the democratization of production due to new technologies; the platforms upon which information is disseminated. This essay will focus on how that digital revolution has affected that one outlet/journalist/beat – or not, if you want to showcase an anomaly.

This exercise should go beyond the descriptive: you are expected to propose an argument about your object of study in the context of the digital age. This will require you to map your object of study onto a wider context of discussion on the media in the digital age. You will also need to show that you have engaged with the debates and theories we have covered in class about journalism in the digital age and use theories to back up your arguments.
You will have already had one exercise in class to introduce you to this assignment in which you would have chosen a subject, briefly researched it and given a presentation. This was meant as a taster to get you thinking about approaching media in a critical way.
