Discussion 6
NOTE: Because of this module’s heavy reading assignment I am giving you a few extra days to complete this discussion.  I am going to give you until 11:59 PM on 31 OCT to get it completed.
The Discussion Assignment
After completing this weeks reading assignment, answer two of the following questions (one from each module), and then read and comment on at least four of your fellow students postings. Note that two of these questions come from last weeks reading and two from this weeks reading. You may answer a third questions for up to 30 points extra credit!  In addition to your textbook, you are encouraged to use the FTCC Library database resources (NC Live, Issues and Controversies, Opposing Viewpoints, etc) as a source of supporting information for your posts. If you use an outside source, be sure to mention what it was and where you found it.  For information on accessing the FTCC Library databases, see the Resources in the weekly assignments folders.

Note: All this weeks questions come from the module ten reading assignment. The 1 question from each module rule will not apply.

One of the major trends in the world today is the spread of literacy. In many parts of the world, only a small percentage of the population could read a generation ago; today, the majority of the population is literate. What sort of social, political, and economic effects will this produce? Will all of them be good?
Some social critics are of the opinion that the spread of electronic media is destroying literacy. Standardized test scores of reading and writing ability have in fact gone down in recent years. Are the new media the main cause? If so, is the slow destruction of the printed media by the electronic media a bad thing?
Do you think that digital technologies in the form of e-books, tablets, and smartphones will soon replace newspapers, magazines, and books, to include textbooks? Do conventional printed materials have a future? What, if any, advantages do they have over digital media? Do you prefer reading assignments in printed books or e-books? Share your thoughts.
Discuss the rise of early radio broadcasting.  What were some of the early intended purposes of radio?  Who took it in other directions and why?  What were the social repercussions?  Do you think we have witnessed any similar phenomena in recent decades and if so, what?  What are some similarities and/or differences?

Grading Criteria
NOTE:  Your answers to 2 of these topics/questions are 60% of the grade for this discussion board and your responses to at least four other students and days of participation make up the remaining 40%! Answers to topic questions must be at least 100 words in length and at least four responses to classmates must be at least 40 words in length.  You must post to this DB on at least 3 separate days to get full credit. If both questions answered are from the same module you will lose five points.
Late posts answering two of the topic questions will be eligible for no more than 60% if made within one week of the discussions closure. After one week this cannot be made up.

Evolution, Religion, and Intelligent Design

Many people mistakenly believe that a belief in evolution precludes a belief in God or intelligent design; in other words, some people falsely think that one must be an atheist or agnostic to believe in evolution and the Big Bang. The Catholic Church is one example of a religious institution that has long held the view that evolution and the Big Bang explain how we got here. Read the below article from the Catholic Herald, and then answer the following questions: Why do you think so many people are mistaken about the ability to believe in God as well as evolution and the Big Bang? Do you find anything problematic about combining religious and scientific explanations of the universe? Explain.

NB: In this discussion, students often misuse the word theory, saying things such as the Big Bang/evolution are just theories. But to say this is a misuse of the word ‘theory’ as it applies to scientific theory. Many people misunderstand the word as it is used in the realm of science, thinking it to mean a guess, a hypothetical, untested idea. However, in science, ‘theory’ means something different. Please read the article below:

“Just a Theory”: 7 Misused Science Words – Scientific American

Article from the Catholic Herald

By Patrick Cusworth October 31, 2014

Pope Francis’s comments on the Big Bang are not revolutionary. Catholic teaching has long professed the likelihood of human evolution

Perhaps it was inevitable that Pope Francis comments on the Churchs position on scientific theories such as the Big Bang and evolution would cause a stir. In his address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope cautioned against the image of God the creator as a magician, with a magic wand, arguing that belief in both theories around the beginnings of the universe and the birth of humankind are consistent with the Catholic faith.

The Big Bang, which is today posited as the origin of the world, does not contradict the divine act of creation; rather, it requires it, he stated. Similarly, he argued, evolution of nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation because evolution pre-supposes the creation of beings which evolve.

Yet despite further murmurings that Pope Francis was beginning (yet another) revolution in Catholic doctrine, it must be pointed out the Popes declaration on either theory has not broken with established Catholic belief in the slightest.

The Big Bang theory, originally hypothesised in 1927 by Jesuit priest and physicist Georges Lematre, is based on the central proposition that the universe is continually expanding. As a preposition, the universe was originally contained within a single point, in a highly intense state of heat and density. As the universe began to expand it cooled, allowing the formation of subatomic particles, which began a series of physical cosmological processes, which led eventually to the known universe. While this has become the most commonly accepted explanation for the beginnings of the universe, many scientists have previously expressed an instinctive opposition to the notion of a beginning point, since this would represent a question which science could not answer as Professor Stephen Hawking concluded in his autobiography, One would have to appeal to religion and the hand of God to determine how the universe started off.

Turning to Pope Francis comments on evolution, Catholic teaching has long professed the likelihood of human evolution albeit with the proviso that this takes place under the guidance of the Creator, and that special creation of the human soul is performed directly by God. As Pope Pius XII stated in Humani Generis (art. 36): the teaching authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God.

Pope John Paul II specifically endorsed this position in his own address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1996, declaring that since publication of the latter encyclical, new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than a hypothesis The convergence in the results of these independent studies constitutes in itself a significant argument in favour of the theory.

While it is refreshing to see the Popes pronouncements upon matters scientific reaching and being welcomed by individuals not generally well disposed toward the Church, the implicit suggestion that Pope Francis has somehow brought about a radical change in the Vatican worldview is a misleading one. The Church has a centuries-long history of promoting scientific inquiry long may it continue.

3 REFERENCES AND SCREENSHOTS OF THE DIET ANALYSES REQUIRED

You will use Cronometer.com to analyze the cross country runner’s diet. First, enter an athlete’s profile that is reasonable for that sport (age, gender, height, weight, activity level) and set a realistic macro distribution (look for the settings menu). Next, enter the foods the player ate into the diet analysis program (be sure to separate each day based on the menu file chosen–do not enter all foods for the three days into one day in Cronometer.com).

Once you entered all the foods into Cronometer, you will get an analysis of the diet.  Screenshot the diet analysis and submit it with your answer to the questions below. Use the “diary” view to print/screenshot each individual day showing the food list on the top and nutrient analysis on the bottom, and use the “trends” tab for a summary nutrient report (showing just the nutrient analysis and date range–it will look the same as the daily reports, but without a food list on top).  For the most accurate summary results, be sure to set your “trends” filters to <last 7 days> and <non-empty days>. Use the “trends” summary report to answer the questions. Do NOT answer the questions for each day individually–you MUST use the “trends” nutrient report.

Next, create a Word file that answers the questions below (please either number them or include the question).  These responses should be well-developed, graduate-level short answer essays, and provide evidence (from the reports themselves, classroom resources, and/or other appropriate materials) to justify your recommendations/choices. Single sentences or bulleted lists are not appropriate.

Which nutrients were less than 100% of the DRI goal?
What changes would you suggest to increase the nutrients in yellow to green?  Be specific. Do not just state you would increase the amount of the foods already present in the athletes diet.  Add new foods.
What role did physical activity level play in the players dietary plan?
How much water did the athlete consume? Did it meet the target?
You must submit one or more files in the assignment area under Assignment 1:

Screenshots of the diet analyses (3 individual days and 1 summary report).
Word document with the question answers (report images can be embedded IF large enough to read the numbers)

If you choose to do this assignment, first, please read the attached document. Then write a complete essay of about two to three double-spaced pages. Essays less than two double spaced pages will not be sored. Your essay will include a brief summary of the major points in the document. From there, also using this document, your essay should become a specific plan of how you will use new study strategies. Your study plan should be ultra specific. For example, don’t just write you’ll do better time management. Rather, write specifically how you will practice better time management.

Citation for this assignment is not required unless you use a source other than your textbook or the attached document.

Remember, in this course direct quotes are never permitted; always paraphrase any information you borrow from any source.

As with all work in this course, check your essay for errors of mechanics {for example, spelling and/or capitalization errors}.
